The $122 HP Pavillion Gaming PC! | The Value of Upgrading a Prebuilt

  • This here is an HP Pavillion p6310y which I picked up for just ten dollars at my university's surplus center. It looks like it could be capable of some gaming, but does this system have what it takes? I upgrade the Pavillion with a GTX 1050 and a 1TB Hard drive to find out what performance you can expect if you manage to find one of these out in the wild.
    This video was a super pleasure to make, but it took a while as I'd been recovering from bronchitis throughout production. I'm finally over it now though which means more content for everyone! Yay!
    As always, thank you guys for watching, and I'll be seeing you next week!

    These HP Pavilion are all you need for casual gaming and web browsing. I used one for last 10 years. Still works great. They also are often equipped with the realtek ALC888 DAC chip which I really like for game sound and music. And look at the capacitors on that motherboard. They are everywhere.

      I grew up on a 4 core 2.5hrz AMD, with a add on GTX 750Ti, and 8 gigabytes of ram. Not only did it breeze through what my parents wanted to do on it. It tanked my gaming on medium settings for most games. The only thing wrong with it now that I can find is the power supply is ticking. For an office PC it's a beast lol.

    I have an HP system almost exactly like this! Just wondering... when I checked the specs on the HP website it said the board is Micro ATX form factor. Do you think that a Micro ATX AM4 board would fit in that case? Obviously with some modding to the IO plate :)

    • @rkmugen
      @rkmugen Před 2 lety

      Micro-ATX mobos should work in that case. One thing to look out for is whether or not your choice of cooler (AIO or a traditional heatsink+fan) will actually fit in the same PC case. Now.... this case actually pre-dates AIO water cooling, so you won't see any obvious place to mount a radiator. I mean, you could probably mod something to mount it where the case fan is, on the back of the PC, but that's usually a 92mm fan, and I don't think anyone makes a 92mm radiator. I might be wrong, but the smallest AIO I've ever seen was designed to be mounted in the rear of a case that's designed for a rear 120mm case fan.

    • @johnmichaell2505
      @johnmichaell2505 Před 3 lety +1

      That sounds like an issue with either your hard drive, or BIOS. Basically right now, your desktop doesn't recognize that there's anything with an OS, which means either it's not reading Windows on your hard drive, or there's a BIOS issus that's preventing it from reading the hard drive. First step would be to go into your BIOS settings by pressing F10 when the computer first starts up, navigating over to the boot settings, then make sure that your hard drive is detected by the BIOS and is set up so it will boot.
      If it is, then it's an issue with either the drive itself or Windows software. At that point, trying a Windows recovery media is probably your best bet, or a new hard drive with a fresh install.

      @@bland9876 Yes. If you are replacing the hard drive with the SSD, you can use the existing SATA cable. For power, you will need a molex to SATA power adapter (they are very common and do work) if your system doesn't already have one. I find it odd that you say that your system uses a hard drive with a molex power connector. That wasn't too common on SATA drives, and was really only seen in the mid 2000's with early SATA drives that were a bridge PATA design. Most systems this new should definitely have a newer drive than that.

      @@victormorales6124 Yes, you can. Check the specifications on the motherboard to see which CPUs it will support, and make sure your socket will match. Go to this site and put in your HP computer model, and it will tell you under the specifications what the motherboard can support. For the P6310y, the highest CPU it will take is AMD Phenom II X4 9xxx series, which will net you about 3.0-3.5GHz.

      Upgrade the PSU. Usually Ti 1050 card comes with external power pin. 300w is a bit low for adding gpu
