Thank you for the video! ☺👍♥
Fascinating video as usual
Great tips, sir!
Glad it was helpful!
I always try to use, at least, the computer case (depends on the client choice), and start up with a new built. Maybe the GPU can be refurbished by myself. And I always use an earlier gen built. Because I sell things to clients, and just to be sure, everything is working out of the box. It's a little dangerous to use the newest components available. So my last built was a AM4 platform. From next year I will be using the AM5 platform. Most of the bugs will be solved by that time. And be cheaper as well, price is also a factor. Even for myself, I build an AM4 system with a custom water loop. I do this for many years and I didn't have complaints in the 20 years I'm doing this. I also look for parts, the best bang for the buck, that means reading a lot of data sheets and looking for the lowest price. Back in the day, the builds were a lot easier, because these parts were cheaper, and mostly in stock.
As you said if the PC is working for your needs then there is no need to do anything. My system is 4 year old system, it works at the moment for what I need it for but I have been noticing it's getting taxed a little with the more modern programs so I will just upgrade rather than replace. Will cost less and give me a boost.
My old phenom 1045 is still in use for backup and as a standby for light office use. It's running w10pro, so still good for that use case until w10 isn't supported anymore.
If it servers a purpose, then why not.
Same here! Old computer upgraded to win10. Still pretty fast, but I fly a drone and it's the graphics card that holds me back doing video editing. Graphics upgrade NG. However for the 10 videos I post a year. I just go over my daughters house and edit. LOL Money no issue. Starting all over again with tons of software and possible aggravation is the issue.
I'm not a computer engineer, but I understand capital. My rule of thumb is to buy the best that I can afford at the time, use it till it wont run easily, then buy a new one. Since the 90's I've been doing this, replacing a computer every 5 years or so. Pretty good runs for the money, I've watched friends try to compete by upgrading, doesn't compete. Competing being the principle argument in my rule of thumb. Sure some do compete using 486's (a joke) but it's very hard to do that... to little reward but self gratification. There are unavoidable standards to keep, operating on the internet being paramount... try uploading a big file, you need the latest hardware running the latest software to "compete". You might run, but if you are competing... no.
For work I am assigned a new laptop about every 4 years or so, but for personal tasks I still use my 13 year old laptop. Upgraded the RAM from 4GB to 8GB about 8 years ago and I changed the HDD to an SSD about a year ago. Still runs decent enough for excel, youtube, music, light gaming and light video editing. What might force me to either purchase a new computer or install Linux is that it does not officially support Windows 11, so end of support for Win 10 in 2025 might also mean the end for my laptop.
Good video, Brian. BTW, you mentioned something about the minimum amount of RAM. I'm going to run CAD with simulation software. What amount of RAM should I have for such needs?
I run music production software with heavy render loads and I have 64Gb fast RAM, but also the GPU is very important, especially in your case, you have to prevent bottlenecks in your system, So CPU, GPU, RAM are important to look at, also the SSD's you buy can have a significant uplift. It's a combination of everything.
You would need a minimum of 32GB I would say. But depends really
Is there any way to detect if yer pc is gonna fail? My Dell Optiplex 3020 runs fine for what i need it for but if fails i'm screwed as i need it daily.. Just need it to run until next year as it doesn't support Windows 11?
If replacing ssd from hdd, you have to reinstall everything, right? Can't do image from hdd to ssd ?
I have a GTX 970 graphics card on a 6 year old gaming laptop.(new bios running windowa 11) In order to play a new game I need to upgrade the graphics card. Can I do this and if so, will I need a new motherboard?
whats that asus tuf board lots m.2???
Best upgrades are replacing an HDD with an SSD as you mentioned and I guess that adding an RX6400 or an A380 would give an old desktop the ability to stream at 4K and also play AV1 files. The Low Profile RTX 4060 would allow for some 1080p gaming.
Thank you.
If you're pc is not upgradable. And you have a up to date current antivirus. After the service life ends could you configure windows firewall to restrict access to safely use known websites? And continue to use windows 10 safely? If so could you do a video on how to set this up?
Same situation here. Hoping for an answer before I just get another computer.
had my laptop lenovo since 2017 only had to replace mechanical 1tb toshiba hard drive died after 3 years had to replace with 1tb icoolax ssd 2.5 drive way much faster dose what i want it to do and works fine 12gb ddr4 ram here hopefully they can extend windows 10 after 2025 so i can continue using my i7 75oou 7th gen
I'm using Ryzen 3 3200g, rx 570 4gb, a320m hdv, 450w psu
Should I upgrade or buy new?
Excellent content packed full of good advice, build turned out really nice hope that the lucky person that gets it appreciates it like the skill and care that the person took to built it. I can build PC's buit there is a finece about how you do it I know you like building them as you have said many times on Discord, hope that by following your tutorials and good advice my next build will look just as good thanks Brian.
Thanks for the kind words and support.
I want and need a new computer.
My laptop from 2013 still turns on
It's still worthy
Use Windows 10 LTSC. It would be perfect for an old computer. I have a Sony laptop with a 2008 Core 2 Duo, 2GB DDR2 RAM and a 320GB HDD. Windows 10 LTSC ran like using an SSD.
Please send red cross parcel of 8GB memory stick
Send to who?
Sometimes I'll upgrade a PC or laptop as long as it is feasible. Sometimes installing Linux helps keep a computer productive but, there comes the time when it is best to buy a new one.
👍👍👍👍
Cheers 👍
Remember that Windows 10 support ends in 2025. Older machines won't run Windows 11 without a workaround. Microsoft says that Windows updates might not run on older machines. The next Windows feature update reportedly will not allow low-end older processors to boot.
No option to upgrade because my old PC cannot do Windows 11. I need to get a new PC 😭
Sorry to hear that.
Older computers don't have security features .
The operating system is what will get a lot of folks . Gaming will get a lot of folks. Video and photo editing will get a lot of folks. Being poor and can' t afford a new computer will get a lot of folks. What is your take on the AMD , AM5 socket and the DDR5 memory?
Hey Brian, wanted to warn you about an issue I am encountering on Samsung Solid State Drives. ⚠ ⚠ If you using a Samsung Solid State Drive, do NOT upgrade to the newest 8.0 version from within the app. It breaks functionality. Do a clean uninstall of 7.3. Reboot. Download a standalone of 8.0, and install from there. Otherwise cats and dogs!! ⚠ ⚠
Thanks for the heads up
Never ever upgrade unless you spilled water on your unit. Keep cleaning the inside of it. Keep re installing fresh windows repeatedly. No reason to upgrade unless it catches on fire or spilled a drink on it. Keep fixing it until you can't fix it no more. Get your money's worth 😅
No one has money like you have or work
and that is my fault? or my problem Steven?
i what to ask is the new update of windows 11 dev update 23h2 thanks
I can't listen to him saying fings anymore
