  • In this video I show you guys how to upgrade an old office pc for gaming. I talk about what kind of parts you should upgrade in an older system and how to change out each part. This in my opinion is the best way to put together a cheap gaming pc.

Tech By Matt: I did my own system kinda like this but hunted the Australian gumtree site for my local 2nd hand gear, got a z77 & 3770k, new 120gb ssd, added a 1060 6gb i got on special & a new 80+ gold psu, (also got win7u coz I use&hate win10), also slowly worked up to 32gb ram for no real reason & installed it into a custom modded ikea display cabinet with 8x 200mm fans
Works mint for 1440 & 1080p, sadly 4k is horrid.

I got an insane deal where I live.
Found a i5 3450 powerspec PC with 8gb of ram and a 2tb hard drive for 40 bucks. I had to replace the cooler since the system had like a pound of dust in it and it had destroyed the bearings on the old cooler. Luckily I had the same OEM cooler sitting around that I paid 3 bucks for.

      I got a asus h55 board, xeon x3470 and 8gb of ddr3 ram for 100ish dollars.
I've since then invested into a better cooler (212 evo) and got my xeon to 4.0 Ghz, and it performs almost like a I7-3770 at stock.
      The x3470@4.0Ghz won't bottleneck a 6gb 1060 and also it will bottleneck a 1070 by only 10% which is great, i find RX580 8gb match for it.
Just when picking xeons, try getting the ones that are either rebranded consumer chips or the ones with higher clock speeds and lower core count, something like 4c/8t is just fine for gaming and it's probably going to perform better than 8c/16t that would excel in workstation loads like video editing and animation/3d modelling etc etc

Some newer Intel CPU holders/sockets (that's where the CPU rest on the MB) on the motherboard do not have a readily visible alignment mark. There are notches on each side of the Intel CPU and if you look carefully you will see the corresponding protrusions on the Intel CPU holder/socket. Align the Intel CPU notches with the socket. For RAM - if you are adding to what you already have, try to get the same latency. It will look something like this for example: 16-16-16-39. It may be important in some instances. Just today I had an incompatibility issue with some RAM and once I removed the add-on RAM my system again worked fine. _Most RAM will work in unison with other RAM,_ but sometimes it will not. For you newbies, I hope this helps? Praise The Lord and Godspeed to you all - Hebrews 10:35!!

Ram of differing latency will always train to the lower spec or the higher latency/lower speed RAM's specs. Mixing ram is generally a bad idea unless it's just mixing brand names that doesn't seem to matter much but differing speeds and latency matters quite a lot.

It's been my experience that if you have low density and high density modules in the same machine it will cause issues, and the same goes for using double sided with single sided modules. I just want to throw it out there because I know from experience that these Dell Optiplex 790 and 990 computers won't post with DDR3-1066 (PC3-8500) or 8GB DIMM Modules. They also only work with unbuffered DDR3-1333 or 1600. They won't work with Registered, ECC, or Buffered memory. They sometimes also won't work with "gaming" memory that requires more than 1.5 volts. Gaming memory is not going to be of any benefit anyway in these systems as they offer no ability for overclocking.

Typically the only parts you would remove and upgrade are the gpu and psu. The goal is to buy a cheap pc with a good cpu, which also has a good amount of ram, like 8gb. Then from there, all you need to do is stick a gtx 750 ti or 1050 ti in it as well as a better psu and you have a budget gaming pc

Depending on what video card you use it may or may not fit. Also even if it does fit the SATA ports on these are blocked by many video card fan shrouds. Most of the time you can use 90 degree cables to get around that or use the Silverstone ultra slim right angle sata cables. I have seen a few of them with this issue.
