Asus Rog Strix 3080 Thermal Pads and Fan Replacement

- Hi Everyone!!
This is a tutorial on how to Replace a Fan, Thermal Pad and Thermal Paste on your ASUS ROG Strix 3080, can also be used for 3080TI or 3090.
I had one of the fans wobbling and very high Junction Temperatures so my Vrams were asking for a replacement đ.
I have found throughout doing this procedure several times that the best option is to change Vrams thermal pads and install them also on gpu's backplate. The one that gave me the best results is Thermalright Extreme Odyssey and Noctua Thermal Paste.
You could also change the smaller pads, but they are usually in great shape and don't get hot enough so no need to change them.
Keep in mind if you want to change all of them you are going to need several sizes. 1mm 1.5mm etc.
As you can see at the end of the Video I was able to lower the Junction Temperatures from 100 degrees celsius from its OEM pads to 76 degrees celsius, so that's quite the improvement.

Gonna do the same thing you did and also replace my woobly fan, was thinking about replacing all the thermal pads but the prices are just to high for those little pads. Hi! Iâve never had the chance to deal with A 3070 to be honest. Since they are practically the same except for the power connectors, itâs should be at least for the GPU core, not sure about the transistors though, you could try check on Reddit if there is a post about 3070 strix layout

Did you replace the pads only on the VRAM on both sides with 2mm pads and left everywhere else the standard pads? Or should i get

In regard to the thermal pads thatâs exactly what I did, being careful to not damage the other ones since they use diferent sizes. But there is no need to replace those, just do thermal pads on both sides for Vrams, put exactly the size, take your time to measure it and replace thermal paste as well and you are done!!! Yeah unfortunately i am from europe so the fan you used is from america so i bought one from amazon and i think it will work as well :) (also with a logo)

If your fan is wobbling and is under warranty you can send it to asus and they will send you another unit, even if they say that they will replace the fan , they wonât. It happened to me once, up to you if you wanna have another unit (still most likely used once but approved from them) if you are happy with yours but temps are fine, then sadly when you open it you must put thermal paste and try to be extremely carefull and patient so the thermal pads wonât break when separating the GPU, but thermal paste for sure you must!!
@@MAIKUS07 thank you. the fan is not wobbling, just running fast even when I just play a YT video. Started a while ago, I saw some people with the same issue and it was the outlet on the fan side which was not fully plugged. So I have to open it to check that (guarantee is passed). will be my first time applying thermal paste :)
I'm planning to repaste my GPU as well, GPU temps are at 70c and hotspots at over 100c while gaming. Didn't notice there is a memory junction temps when using GPU-Z, what monitoring software you using? May I ask where did you get the fan replacement? The right fan of my GPU is wobbling exactly like yours. Thanks for the video guide.
Hi!!! I use Hinfo64, the ones I bought that look precisely oem are from eBay, check the comment I have left the link somewhere there. Looks like your gpu is having a dry thermal pads on, you may also see that there might be grease there (clean it with isopropyl alcohol like I did or with a pad if you donât feel coragueous enough đ ). Of course that wobble doesnât help at all, good luck!đ

Check this link, you'll see all the measurements, but depends on where you have high temps, Id only worry about the vrams, just use 2mm on all the vrams and same place for vrams but on the backplate (like the video) that will make a Huge change, if you open the gpu and the other pads are usable (not broken or full of grease) then don't mind on changing them, this is obviously considering a budget. If money its not an issue then by all means go ahead. But bear in mind, the big change youll see it by replacing the thermal paste, pads on Vrams and adding pads on the backplate, good luck !!

Hey i also have the strix 3080 ti even when undervolted at 1875mhz with 850mV the card still runs at 70-78C when pulling 320-350W
@@paulferdinand4655 are you 100% positive itâs taking the 850mV? It cannot run that hot on that voltage, asumming youâve done proper maintenance then consider sending it to ASUS to RMA it đ€ :/
Hey do your fans always run so high? Theyâre pretty loud even when replaced right?? I just upgraded and got a deal on a used ROG Strix 3080 10GB from Amazon and it runs hot and Iâve had a few issues with plugging in my DP cables. How hot does yours run with maxed out settings at 1440? Which games?
Hi! If itâs a used card, I recommend you to do a proper maintenance, I bought even new strix 3080 and it had thermal pads oem leaking oil! If yours is a used one and most likely V1 , Iâd bet it was used for mining and ran 24/7 with fans at max speeds. Mine is not loud even at max, thatâs smt really cool about the strix fan system. Mine doesnât run hot at all!!!
@@MAIKUS07 itâs actually a V2! My GPU temp is around 70-80 C when running Fortnite at all epic settings specifically. However, I only have 1 fan at the back of my case which could be why itâs running hotter too. I just donât know what to do, I could still return it. Unless this performance is normal? The fans are spinning between 2000RPM-2700RPM when itâs at 70-80 Celcius. Which is when the fans get audible
@@sapients2664âââ ââ from the start, if you donât have a proper cooling system on your case, then the whole system is wrong from the get go, you need a balance between intake and exhaust, itâs very inexpensive and quite often a a solution that can bring down temp by 5-10 Celsius in many cases. Second download hinfo64 and check what you have on junction temperature when playing at max settings, if itâs lower than 90 you are ok , if itâs 100 or more Iâd worry and change thermal pads, keep in mind if you gotten a good deal, and you have the knowledge and security to do what I did in the video, then you have a good card, you maintenance is sometimes forgotten but a must at some point in life of the Gpu and a 3080 strix itâs an amazing card (3090 is a big leap and more lifetime, but it is what it is đ ) . Last download Mai afterburner and set card as default and then put fans at 80% that should be an acceptable db of the fans noise(up to you really, I rather have my card tuning as cold as possible, I use headset when playing anyways), you could also leave it at auto⊠but no matter what, arrange the systems fan properly!! That is the listing on eBay where I got it and as you can see on the video the motor is exactly the same replacement (probably from the same factory even đ)

Since you are opening it and perhaps you find yourself with thermal pads leaking oil then you have to change it or you open it to change the fans and the thermal might break resulting in poor contact when reassembling it. Better to do it only once đ and you end up with a strix for many years to come!!

I have seen a video showing that is doable, but itâs super tight and you need to have specific screwdrivers and even then will you most likely scratch the gpu housing

Hi!! I have done this in so many strix 3080, I lost count. Trust me, all you need to replace is the thermal pads (and paste for core) and put on the backplate as well to achieve the same result shown on the video!!! 2mm is perfect, at the description you have the links to buy exactly the one you need. You could change the other ones that are smaller but there is no need, just be careful not to break them when you take the pieces apart, do it slowly and if it breaks put it back, those donât change the overall result!

Is it possible to take just the fan shroud off without having to completely disassemble the card? Need to replace a bad fan on my Strix 3070.
Thatâs exactly the issue, in order to be able to replace the fans you do have to go through the whole process of disassembly, Iâve seen some people accomplishing what you want but not without scratching very seriously the circuit board (entering with a screwdriver from the sides) itâs better to take time and perform a thorough maintenance, I promise if you follow exactly the video itâs as easy as it looks!! @@MAIKUS07Just got the new fan installed. Ended up just re-using the thermal pads since they looked brand new. Thermal paste was hard and dried out, so I'm glad I actually needed to take it completely apart. Replaced it with MX-6 and the temps have dropped significantly! Hi! The RGB itself is very easy to change but it forces you to disassemble the GPU as well unfortunately. The rgb has one or two tiny screws and then you need to slide the plate on its free side to be able to take it out!! Good Luck

Hello! I cannot say for sure. For 3080 and 3090 yes. 3070 has not diferent build, at least for the vrams I would dare to say they are, but if when opening the GPU , other thermal pads brake, those most likely are diferent mm.

Hi! Iâm in vacations right now, away from all the parts. But will definitely have it in my mind for next video, these led bars tend to dimm over time. Itâs very simple to change though, it has 1 or 2 tiny screws and then it slides right off from the side!!

I noticed, that my gpu is the loudest part when gaming and based on others, their pc is whispering silent (which mine also is when the gpu isnt spinning) idk, how loud really normal is but i would have liked to try it out with some new fans. Because currently, my apple watch is saying that its arround 55 db loud when play the last of us for example (ik, the watch isnt an accurate device for that)

Man on gpu is necessary to put thermal paste on all the surface of gpu die. It is not a cpu that have IHS.
