Did you see No One Will Save You?
This is one of the few recent films that creeped me out.
@@liviolangella2777
I did.
It’s not The Frankenstein Theory, is it?
I was the art director on this film. Glad to see people are still discovering this!
Great job you did
what was it like working on this?! This is such a cool film.
Thank you!
It was difficult, but rewarding. Thank you!
Kudos
Had a chance to talk to the director and he was really a truly sweet person. I regret not interviewing him when I had the chance. But very happy his film is getting a lot more love in recent years.
From interviews he seemed like a cool guy, wish we could've gotten more. R.I.P
This movie is bad ass
I found this on Amazon. I was shocked at how good it was. Having Eduardo Sanchez in this was a touch of brilliance.
Same. There's plenty of mocumentary/found footage movies now, but this is one of the few that sticks out
Came to say the same thing! I really enjoyed the entire last act of the film.
I started reading "House of Leaves" recently and because of it I've been curious what a multi-level fake horror documentary would be like. This might really scratch that for me.
House of Leaves is sooo good ! One of my fav books by far.
@@stee8345 I'm still early into it but it's such an usual read and it works incredibly well. It doesn't feel like it's just complicated for the sake of it but it's specifically about the emotional responses to the central story.
@@PauLtus_B for sure...tbh the first time I read it, it horrified me, but upon rereading it recently years later it struck me as a love story of sorts. Idk, don't want to give too much away but you'll see what I mean. It's so good
@@stee8345 Thanks for that.
I'm usually not too caring about spoilers but I'd still rather not have it happen.
So far I certainly haven't read anything even kinda comparable.
@PauLtus_B I just started reading House of Leaves too! So far it's a slow read but really interesting. I work full time and am raising a toddler so I don't get to just read for hours a day anymore. I feel like House of Leaves is one I'd read in a week if I could 😂
Love this movie it’s so underrated. I can’t believe the Director actually went out and basically made blank man a creepy pasta/urban legend on the Internet before he made the movie. Sad to see he passed away a while ago
Maybe he's the actual guy who wrote SCP blink.
This is by far the best "movie about an urban legend" ever. The first time I saw this I thought I genuinely thought this was lost footage. This movie is so underrated, and I think it ranks up there as the best found footage films ever.
I wouldn’t go that far …… but I loved it too
Watched this film with some friends a few months ago and have absolutely loved it. Horror mockumentaries like this, Savageland, and Horror in the High Desert have been the big kick we have all been on
Have you seen "The Tunnel"* or "Lake Mungo"? "Tunnel" is almost more found footage, but there is a mockumentary element to it, as well. "Lake Mungo" is almost entirely mockumentary.
*The 2011 version; there's a few different tv shows and movies with that name. This one is about a documentary crew in Sydney, Australia going into tunnels under the railway
Another good one I don’t see many people talking about Is “man bites dog”
I really, really hope Horror in the High Desert (both of them) is coming soon.
@@fisheyenomiko He hasn't done Lake Mungo yet??? Hoo boy
@@fisheyenomiko I have heard of both of them and they are on my list
sort of surprised i havent seen any comments mentioning marble hornets, the similarities between the two are honestly astounding. the horrific entities, the filmmaker who drags in and subsequently drives away his loved ones to capture it, the obsession and insanity, the found footage... really cool stuff
Got this video recommended, and immediately looked to see if anyone else had drawn this comparison when the vid was over lol. Sounds like this is a good movie to check out for fellow MH lovers!
I literally came to the comment section for this. Why do so few people acknowledge or even remember Marble Hornets? :
Butterfly Kisses is brilliant. It’s up there with Blair Witch and Hell House LLC. RIP to the director, he deserved wide recognition for this film.
Blair witch lol.
@@AA-ed6ekwhat do you mean by that
@@AA-ed6ekYes...
I've seen this film and it is so damn good. I love that it turns into a psychological thriller by the end about a filmmaker getting his dreams crushed at every step of the way.
Wow, where can I watch it? It sounds like the movie is better than the review!
@@whitedragoness23 I saw it on Tubi a few months ago.
@whitedragoness23 tubi has it for free. It is good, honestly.
Minor bit of spoilers here. Feel free to not read but it doesn't spoil much more than Ryan's video does.
The thing I found truly tragic upon completing this one is how Gavin seemed like he was half assing it in many ways at the beginning. He was more interested in turning it into a film that could catapult him to stardom than he was in actually investigating or creating an honest documentary.
Part of the way through, when he loses everything, he disappears for like 2 weeks. Over the course of those two weeks, he clearly investigated a lot harder and actually found a lot of evidence proving the validity of the tapes. But it was too late.
This movie and Lake Mungo do horror so well, that I'm surprised mockumentaries aren't used for horror more. Apart from some fairly poor acting in BF, the characters feel so real and just add to that dread.
Both are low tier. These are fun movies but I just cant see it .Especially lake mungo. Ive tried watching it multiple times, always getting referenced That Scene. Its just not a scary movie.
I actually think Lake Mungo is, in a way, one of the scariest films I've ever seen. It's essentally a film about a family finding out that their daughter knew her death was coming soon, and that she spent the last few months of her life suffering, desperate and alone, without anyone to talk to about her situation, since nobody would believe her. That, to me, is one of the realest and most terrifying concepts I've ever seen a horror film tackle.
Now, the parallels to the real world issues of depression and suicide are obvious, and I know that the fact that I know people who have taken their own lives no doubt makes it scarier and sadder to me than it does to other people. Still, I respect the hell out of it for tackling such a dark issue in a really unique way, and I just kinda wanted to express why I think it's so scary, though I get it might not do the same for you.
And yeah, regardless of all that "That scene" is also just really creepy
@@johnsmif6615I agree with it not being that "scary" , but it's still one of my favorite films ever. It's not really meant to be a proper horror film but more of a drama about a grieving family trying to cope and a daughter tackling her demons with some horror elements.
I like the idea of hinting at what the next video will be. I'm going to guess this next one will be Frankenstein's Army?
Omfg I hope so much that it is! I've been recommending it for a long time in the comments in hopes that Ryan and others would watch it :)
You beat me to it lol
Spot on 😂
He already has a video on that movie!
The title of the video is,
"The Craziest World War 2 Monster Movie You've Never Seen"
Is it just me, or is this like a perfect format for an adaptation of "House of Leaves"
oh shit matt davies (the actual sound designer for this film and being literally in it), he was one of my professors in college during my senior year and he helped me with my sound design for my final thesis animated film!! never thought i'd come across a review like this of something he worked on, small world!!
I found this movie I believe from Chris Stuckmann, I absolutely adore this movie and it destroys me the director is no longer alive. May he rest in peace.
I really find horror fascinating as a genre. I mostly consume movies vicariously through channels like this one, though, since I have nobody to watch them with. Stuff like this has a way of really getting under my skin and I feel like I need someone I can talk to after the credits roll to kind of reflect and unpack things. Thanks for your videos man, they are pretty much exactly what I need.
This is such a good point, I feel the same way about having to talk about what I just watched right after or it’ll get under my skin. Made that mistake with skinamarink, had no one to talk to about it. That movie stuck with me for weeks and had me feeling so depressed lol
oh man, I'll never forget watching this on a bored afternoon and not expecting much, then thought "wow, i really liked that." we need more horror mockumentaries
I love this movie so much and I'm glad you covered it. RIP Erik.
wow, literally watched this movie the day before you uploaded this video and was mad there was no one really examining the movie. great content here
I have recommended this particular movie to more people this year than any other. Had just heard about it myself not too long ago, and was surprised to find myself having a dream about the film, which is rare for me. Super bummed out to hear the director passed away, particularly because he seemed like a really nice guy and was responsive to fans on reddit.
Okay, I want to see this now just for the Peeping Tom urban legend at the heart of the film. What a great creepy amalgamation of several popular urban legends.
Im glad you are doing more found footage
I'm glad we a Friday video to make our day better thanks Ryan
YES!! I found this movie on a random like IMDB "movies like this" thing while looking at hell house and it quickly became one of my favorites, while a little rough around the edges at some points i think it really perfectly walks that line of mockumentary, like the documentary crew's focus on the failed horror writer instead of the specific horror while it still plays out, it feels like something you'd see on netflix (minus the ending where everything goes ary of course) its probably one of my favorite horror mockumentaries
I was born, raised and to this day, still live in Maryland. As teens in the 90's we would visit all the 'haunted' places along 7 hills in Ellicot City. When I saw this movie I was confused because I had never heard of this story.
Right! I saw an ad for it on tiktok and was like "I have never once heard of this guy" amazingly made though.
I truly love that you bring shine to little movies like this. Cause I’ve talked about it but I don’t have a big enough channel yet to reach the masses like you can. This little film really deserves.
The idea of staring at someone until you eventually pass away is such a great and horrifying idea. Like kudos on them for writing that!
Got only halfway through this video essay, went looking for the film, watched it in its entirety, and came back to watch this. What a great movie.
I'm gonna take a guess that Frankenstein's Army is the subject of next week's HOYEVER video.
Quite perplexing that it requires a very specific set of actions to summon Tom, but summoning him inevitably leads to death. So why would anyone do it? It’s not like “Cabin in the Woods” touch-an-item trigger type thing.
You have too much faith in humanity. Let's be honest, if this legend were real, someone definitely would have tried it by now.
How many have tried bloody Mary or candyman?
Yes, I'm so happy someone is talking about this. Like some others, I found this while looking for a horror film to watch on Amazon. RIP Erik Kristopher Myers.
Last time I watched one of your videos I had been recovering in the hospital from a medical condition, now I'm sitting in my college dorm at an art school relaxing after a long day to see you've uploaded again.
Feels good to see you upload, always love what you have to say about whatever subject material you choose to approach because its' always something insightful and new rather than something I've heard a ton of video essayists say on a thousand other videos.
It’s a fun film, caught it a year or two back when I did a found footage horror movie month for October, and it was definitely one of the highlights.
Underrated. I was reminded of it when watching The Empty Man.
I saw this for the first time when my partner was out of town and I scared the hell out of myself since I was alone and already pretty jumpy haha
I adore your content! Happy spoopy season friend!
Fantastic essay as usual, loved how you empathized with the protagonist's obsession with becoming a successful freelance artist, I'm in that struggle as well and we do tend to over obsess with numbers sometimes.
I’m so happy to see this film getting more recognition!!!!
I got to play a small part in the making of this film when I was an intern at Studio Unknown and they were doing the sound edit for this movie! I got to meet Erik at the screening of the film and he was one of the sweetest people I’ve ever met. He truly made something special.
I love that you're covering this movie! I saw it completely randomly years ago on Hulu or something (like I literally just let it auto play after the previous movie I was watching was over) and I was shocked by how good it was. A hidden gem for sure, and one I never hear anyone bring up.
I think to me, "Lake Mungo" is always going to be the best horror mockumentary.
Hell yeah. Finally this hidden gem gets some exposure. I even had a shirt of i t printed
RIP Erik Kristopher Myers
What a hidden gem! Thank you for covering this! 🦋😘
I first saw Butterfly Kisses maybe a year and a half ago and it's absolutely amazing. The fact that it's been available on so many free streaming services for so long astounds me.
I found this movie just by accident and thought it was pretty well done as found footage films go, especially the multiple twists. Thanks for talking about it! Wonder if the next one has the initials FA.
I saw this movie several years back. I actually really enjoyed it as something a little different from the typical 'found footage' narrative. I think the ultimate trick to any of the found footage movies is to simply have a good story to go with. Only those who really want to believe, or are completely gullible, will ever think what they're watching is real, but a good story can at least make you so engrossed that you forget what you're watching is fiction.
I had such a hard morning at therapy today and was bawling my eyes out crying until I stumbled upon this review. I came across this movie on Tubi months ago and it really stuck with me. Glad one of my favorite vloggers is covering it. This definitely made my day, not that it matters but thank you for being you and creating content, I’m grateful for your videos to get me through rough days to distract me. Have a great weekend.
No, it matters. If it helps someone even in a small way then it matters.
It Matters, Just As You & Your Feelings Matter. I Hope Have A Great Weekend.
Dude, the way you were describing this, I kept getting switched up with what was real and what was in the movie .
So I guess that's a testament to how well this movie is made.
Saw this a few years ago. I loved this movie. Glad to see it on here and can't wait to watch your take on it.
Rewatched this movie in preparation for this video, and there's a credit for "fakelore" which I assume is the people who prepared the various articles.
I think Butterfly Kisses definitely works better on a second watch, partly because a couple of the jumpscares are particularly cheap and, when you don't know the direction the movie is going in, that can seem like a bad thing, rather than part of the point - that the supposedly real found footage has way too many trappings of fake found footage for its own good.
I think one of the nice things about the movie is that it does feature relatively smart people talking about the fact that, actually, no matter how many times someone says "this can't be faked", pretty much anything can be faked, and that's what would make actually encountering real found footage like this so maddening.
There's definitely shades of House of Leaves to this movie - I think House of Leaves also featured the device of having people try to figure out *how* a piece of footage was faked, rather than questioning whether it was, and the basis we end up with for believing it is not "this is so amazing, no one could fake this", and more "based on the director's tax returns, we doubt he would be able to finance these special effects".
It is something I think found footage movies do need to address in order to feel credible - that people are just a lot more sceptical nowadays and even holding what should be evidence in your hand isn't going to convince a lot of people.
Great video as always Ryan. Really liked this movie, felt the presence of the Blink Man was really effective when lurking in the background but went too far when recorded in the field. Still thought the blend of found footage and mock doc was a really original slant and often disturbing.
Love the ending bit. I’ll have to think on it! Appreciate the content, Ryan. Another great video!
You have shown me so many amazing horror films, especially in one of my favorite genres “found footage” thank you Ryan!
Oh hey, I remember posting comments recommending you talk about this movie, glad to see you finally helping giving this decent little film a mention.
Someone coming into possession of a found footage horror story and spiralling into obsession trying to complete it while not knowing its real sounds a lot like House of Leaves which is one of my favourite books.
I recently watched this film and I wasn't able to find a good video or anyone to talk to about this, so excited rn!!
This is one of the few films that stayed with me, rent free in my head for a while. More distubing that frightening, but there are quite a few scares in it.
Thank you for making a video about this, just finished watching it and I was very impressed!
Literally love your stuff, the best recommendations I’ve found for Halloween movie nights (every night) thank you❤️✨🍰☺️
What is the difference between love your stuff and literally love your stuff? Love your stuff is perfectly clear. The word literally is just meaningless filler.
This is great to see. I was the producer, DP, and editor for this film!
and you did a great job!
This is one of my favorites! I’ve rewatched it countless times.
Man I forgot about this channel. I subscribed years ago and the algorithm just did ya dirty.
Glad to see it's still here
I've been doing a horror movie binge since the beginning of September and this is one of my favorites I've watched so far. Horror movies mostly don't affect me, but ones like this that imply that simply by watching, you're now a victim as well? SUPER effective. Really cool, definitely very creepy. I was hooked almost immediately, and keeping an eye out for Tom in the background of shots was just the cherry on top.
Have you watched Lake Mungo?
Brilliant video as always and holy hell, I cannot wait for you to cover Frankenstein's Army! I genuinely love that flick.
Is that worth checking out, I heard the designs were great but the movie sucked
@@MrBooone in my opinion it was a fun pulpy flick. The designs are definitely the best part of the movie and makes up for some of the lacking bits in the script
@MrBooone It's for sure worth a watch, great gory time. Spooky and disturbing enough to have that thick horror coating, yet creative enough to be genuinely fun to watch!
I saw this a few years ago and no one I talk to had ever seen it! So thank you for covering it. I thought it did some unique things worth at least a video from someone.
Can't wait to watch this one. Favorite film CZcamsr of all time and probably the only content creator I watch every single upload.
Ive always loved how you can have insightful analysis that increases my appreciation of these movies, but without the stuffy pretentious attitude that is so common with other creators in your field.
It's a treat to see you cover my favorites and an even greater treat to see you help me discover new ones.
Cheers Ryan!
thanks!!
For real. When it comes to celebrating cinema, Ryan Hollinger and Chris Stuckmann are alone in my personal S Tier.
Love your content keep up the great work
Watched this based on your thumbnail alone last night with some friends. We really enjoyed it! I'm finding the final visual lingering in my mind today too 😢. Love your videos keep it up!
Thanks for recommending this one, Ryan. I watched this one a few hours ago, and really enjoyed it! As a viewer, it keeps you similarly frustrated trying to aee id you will have definitive evidence of Peeping Tom by the end (in a good way). Seeing Gavin sink deeper into madness and obsession is actually even more interesting than the central mystery.
Hey, just wanted to let you know that I love the videos and just discovered your channel about a month ago. Will keep an eye out for anything you upload. Keep it up brother!
Just finished the film to make sure I could watch this without spoilers. I did not expect it to be that good! Well worth grabbing a watch beforehand.
just got back from watching this on tubi. I gotta say the most unrealistic thing to me was actually the amount of skepticism Gavin faced from the call in show. You only have to look at the plethora of ghost tiktoks to see hundreds of people who will be easily convinced of anything remotely paranormal. Like sure I would have had the skeptical take but I also know how unpopular that take is XD
I’ve never watched a found footage or horror mockumentary movie, but this looks really interesting, I might check it out.
Omg I love this movie, one of my favorites in the found footage genre. Thank you for covering it!
Watched this in Amazon and it has become a rewatch in my horror list for a long time. I'm so happy others are enjoying it too! Found/Docu footage horror movies get crapped on a lot but they're an easy and enjoyable watch.
From what I recall, it wasnt so much audiences "wised up" after Blair Witch, so much as the sudden ubiquity of the internet followed, and in particular both the search engine Google and Wikipedia became daily things that increased the ability of almost anyone to fact check and share info (this is still before smartphones and social media algorithm producing media silos)
Watched it a few days ago and IM OBSESSED!! I do wonder why they didn't just destroy the camera? What happens if you die before he gets you?
I’ve heard of this, thanks for covering it!
I have seen this! So glad you're digging into it!
I had a BIG found footage horror phase back a few years ago and I found a bunch of duds a few genuine gems, and this was EASILY one of those gems. (Alongside the ridiculously fun Bad Ben series and some other notable standouts)
I’m always glad to see this get mentioned because it’s a genuinely great plot and very well executed, and I feel like it isn’t as well known as it deserves to be.
Not only That but one of the people who worked on it responded to one of my comments about it one time thanking me, and you know sometimes it feels good to know your enjoyment of a movie is seen by someone who worked hard to make it
Getting huge house of leaves vibes with his own twist on it from this. Incredible. I am unsettled even with your jolly voice explaining it.
Love this one! It’s such a great concept and gets better with age.
At first I thought to myself your were going to go the auteur route and do Michael Mann’s the keep but in the frame of K.I.S.S. (Keep it simple stupid) I realized the description of the clue you gave was absolutely in the title Frankenstein’s Army. So that is my true guess. This was interesting and as usual very well done but being that I am not a fan of found footage films, with notable exceptions (.rec, the poughkeepssie tapes, etc), it was refreshing to have it defined so well on why I cannot stand this drama. Beyond the seizure inducing shots, the implausible reasons on what makes people do the dumbest shit possible, and the always jump scarre “oh we are edgy BS that one has to suspend their belief like a tightrope walker. The sheer narcissism of the main “protagonists” has always left me completely cold. From the Blair Witch to Cloverfield one thought has always hung over my head when watching most of the films i this genre, “These unlikeable POSs are getting what they deserve.” I know I am in the minority of how I feel about some of the most financially successful marketing campaigns in the history of cinema but there is precedence showing these characters are selfish trash who could have saved themselves ten times out of ten if they would have made better decisions and put the fucking cameras down. At least in the Evil Dead when they do stupid shit like read the Necronomicon or play the albums despite the clear warnings. One could infer they are being guided by the entity to do so. Hell in 2103 Evil Dead he even admits he fucked up and is the cause of all this tragedy but he is not compelled to apologize or stop it. But in movies such as these there is no compelling force except the power of fame. I really don’t think I will ever like the FF genre but at least I have you to save me from wasting anymore time watching them. Thank you for that.
Have to say, one of the last things I expected in this video was to hear Ryan pitch Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty in a Raycons ad
I loved this movie. I stumbled across it a couple of years ago and, having never even heard of it before, I decided to give it a shot. I was so impressed with it, surprised by just how much I enjoyed it, and to my displeasure, I couldn’t find a single other person who had even heard of it, let alone seen it. I suggested it to everyone I could think of who had tastes similar to mine, but not a single one gave it a try. Since then, I’ve found a small number of fellow fans who made CZcams videos about it, and they all sang it’s praises. But I still haven’t been able to introduce anyone to it, so I figured it would just be a private and personal favorite that I’d have to enjoy alone, and so that’s what I’ve done. I’ve probably seen it a dozen times now, and it’s one I’ll most likely watch once every year or two. I’m happy to see that someone I respect has made a video about it, so I’ll thank you for that. Enjoy the rest of your weekend!
Beautiful crafted video essay on a little unknown gem. Thanks for recommending it, I quite liked it!
I haven't thought of this movie in years...I found it on accident on Amazon Video in college. it was one of those films that didn't scare me as I was actively watching it, but gave me weird nightmares for a couple nights after, just like Mothman Prophecies (2002)
I have watched so many found footage movies that I'm disappointed I never saw this one. Great video. Next one sounds like Frankenstein's Army which is so astoundingly absurd in most spots. Looking forward to it.
I love that I still have this and your last video to watch while I camp!
Hey Ryan, you probably won't read this but I just wanna say I love your channel and it brings me a lot of solice from the stresses of life. I love horror and everything about it and you bring a perspective to it that's so rare on CZcams. Thanks for the channel and pls keep it up
Finally, a Hollinger film labelled as "you've never seen" that I have actually seen. I feel accepted 🖤
I fell in love with this movie the first time I saw it. I love found footage horror and this film has become my favorite in the genre.
HELL YEAH. My girlfriend and i LOVED this movie when we just found it on Prime one afternoon, it became a classic in our house before it was even over
I’ve been meaning to watch this movie since it takes place where I live! That bridge is in Ellicott City, MD (which is already haunted enough in reality) underneath the ruins of a disciple college that has been nicknamed Hell House. This and Blair Witch make me happy Maryland gets some spooky recognition
this is the first video i've ever seen of yours but i've subbed immediately in the hopes that your next video is about a certain 2013 film featuring luke newberry of bbc three 'in the flesh' fame (which is an incredible and heartfelt zombie series for anyone who is into that).
I was thinking the shadowy figure behind her was The Unknown, from Willie’s Chocolate Experience.
The ending is sooooo good and satisfying. Their ambition became their downfall (except the way he died was a bit rushed)
This movie is incedible happy to see you check it out finally! I actually had a binge during some days off in summer of found footage movies. Found this in some list, havent regretted it ever.
Have you ever done a video on Dolls from 1986? I remember watching that one with my sister as a kid. It was so cheesy and funny, but the deaths were surprisingly gruesome. She and I rewound and watched the “F*@k you, clowney!” moment over and over. 😄
Watching this alone at night was not one of my best life choices.
Great FF film, made better by your analysis. Time for a rewatch. Great work as always Ryan.
