      Pontypool is a really interesting, hidden gem of a zombie flick from 2008 that doesn't get a lot of attention or discussion, so it might be a good fit. Also, a closer look at some of the late Stuart Gordon's filmography would be fun. In particular, a double-feature sort of video on Re-Animator (1985) and From Beyond (1986), maybe? Since their productions are almost 1:1 and the films themselves unintentionally work as a compliment to each other. Anyway, I love whatever you're up to no matter what you cover. I'm always happy to see you in my feed.

    This film has been the sole inspiration for my own art, which Ive been making for 5 years now
    The creator of it, Richard Raaphorst, is such a great guy too. Recently he finally released a visual novel 'Worst Case Scenario' - which started out as a predecessor movie to Frankenstein's Army. Since he was aware of my own work by the time it released, he decided to send me a free hardcovee copy, alongside a sketchbook, signed artwork and a custom sketch of my own 'zombots'. There should be a feature in word processing programs, where Clippy will pop up and say “Are you sure this needs to be a found footage movie?” Cause this is far from the last movie that’s totally unnecessarily inserted found footage, despite the fact that it actively hurts the movie it’s featured in.

    • @FTZPLTC
      @FTZPLTC Před 9 měsíci +7

      One thing I'd definitely say is that more films should feel able to just use the aesthetic of found footage - grainy old fashioned cameras, first-person viewpoint, etc. - and just never say that that's what it is. Off the top of my head, Skinamarink and The Lighthouse do the former, Enter The Void does the latter, and they're all very successful in what they set out to do.

I rewatched Occult recently, I really rate that.

      Not Clippy! 😂 But this is a brilliant comment. Just film the shots you want to film. There’s no law stating that you have to use a tired found footage story (because every found footage story is beyond tired at this point) to use found footage style shots. You’d think before filming a full color HD found footage film set in the 1940s they would’ve thought of that.

    Aside from the inaccuracy in the image quality, the camera briefly seen being taken out of the bag is a Bolex and looks like an H16-RX5 (it has a slot for a 400' mag at the top if you look), which didn't come on the market until 1965, and even if it's not, the first H16 model didn't come out until 1956. Plus, if they're Soviet soldiers, they'd never in a million years be using a Swiss camera. They used American Bell & Howell 35mm Eyemo cameras, or the identical Soviet KS model. You would probably love the 2 teaser trailers the director made leading up to this film. I interviewed him years ago, and learned that he built the camera for the teasers from scratch. They're really effective and I wish they'd done the whole film in that style, but I imagine this was as stylized they could make the camera grain without limiting their distribution opportunities.

    I first watched this movie with my grandmother in her old Queenslander house.
    She fell asleep in the middle of the movie but, I was absolutely gripped by the world within the Frankensteins Army.

    Oh, I watched this some times after Dyatlov Pass.
    And funny you said Resident Evil imitated this, because I remember there was Indonesian found footage that was accused of the same thing.

    So glad you covered this movie. Not only did I love watching it but I even have an actual DVD copy in my collection. It's pretty obscure, though. As found-footage films go, it's very, very clever (although the gimmick outstays its welcome by the end). Still, a great climax and kinda funny, too. Vrey underrated horror flick. :)

    Just put a little bit of text on a black screen at the start saying, "This footage has been restored, upscaled, and colourised using modern technology from the original source. The aspect ratio has been adjusted to fit modern screens." There, immersion restored.
