While I don't think the Mandela Catalogue is that scary in of itself, I absolutely adore the concept of Satan and his demons overtaking the Earth by essentially replacement God and His creations. As a Christian myself, the very idea of the Lord you've prayed to and worshipped might not have been the entity you've been talkingnto is haunting and gives me all types of horrifying thoughts.

I'm not even religious and that line gave me chills. Just the idea that so much of human history and our modern world has been shaped by organized religion and what if the source of all that was something manipulative and malicious? How can we trust any of the systems we have in place or the moral ideals put forth by those religions? That's more of an interesting concept for horror than the dopplegangers imo and I hope it gets explored more in volume 5.

@@shinigamiinochi Me and my family don't go to church anymore in a decade for that exact reason actually. So, it's a lot closer to reality than most people think. It's sad as a Christian that actually reads and studies the bible how much misinfo is spread in the church, how many weird religious practices used in church with no grounding in our belief, and extreme egos and narcissism spread throughout, and that's not even all of it. But what's worse is that these churches are really good at making people think that is what all churches should be like and makes everyone else think that is what Christianity is. Not to mention all the churches that actively worship things like themselves, or their cult leader pastor, or even just straight up the devil, yet still claim to be Christian, and their foolish congregation believe them despite their obvious actions.

A lot of analogue horror, I feel, falls into the same trap a lot of kids horror like five nights and Freddy’s and Poppy’s Playtime do: where there’s always this all-encompassing thing that has insurmountable power and it’s only purpose is to mess with you 24/7
It’s like those old horror movies based on animals attacks where you could impale the shark/lion/bear onto a pike and it would willingly impale itself further in the *slimmest* of hopes it could still kill you even if it ensures its death.
It reaches a point where it’s not as scary as it is silly.

    • @christopheraustin5915

Put another way, I dislike a lot of anime villains because it’s common for them to think they have the upper hand and be overconfident because it’s cathartic for the audience to see them be put in their place. But this can backfire and make them just look stupid.
I remember watching the final fight from JoJos part 3 the first time and being pleasantly surprised at how Dio, a man literally declaring himself god, explicitly stated that he needed to be careful around the main protagonist because he was smart enough to realize “this guy could easily murder me”
He still got overconfident and beaten, but he was more believable as a character with agency because he showed the slightest bit of self awareness.

The windmills stopping, followed by the murky sound of the choir getting louder and then suddenly dropping by a half step as light comes through the clouds was creepy. That idea of the Mandela Catalogue being about depression is a very interesting theory and I like it a lot! As you said: the characters’ guilt, despair, and pain are given just as much (if not more so) importance as the scary creatures and things happening around them. Plus, I think it gives a sense of realism to the story-a lot of horror films just have the surviving characters focused solely on surviving and being terrified of getting killed, but in Catalogue we see that the survivors also have to deal with the grief of losing people they know. It’s something I hope more horror stories do, since that is more realistic and more human in my opinion.
Now, if you want to see some Analog Horror stories that do what this series does but a bit better, I have a few suggestions:
The GREYLOCK Tapes (honestly, I’d say this is what the Mandela Catalogue should have been).
    The Monument Mythos
    Midwest Angelica
    Winter of ‘83
    White Door Opened
The Painter (Heads-up-this one gets *very* dark, even by horror standards, fast).

Mandela is a fascinating case to me because it's one of the only ones that I feel actually got worse the more budget it got. Things like giving Gabriel a voice and showing a moving alternate actually made them feel so much more physical that it made them much less interesting and scary. Alex did go on a Q&A and said that people forgot about the MAD symptoms and that they still play a role, a role that hasn’t been revealed yet so when Ryan brought up the MAD symptoms later in the video it really speaks to how much attention Ryan was giving to this series and that’s all I could really ask for. =)

Something I truly love about the series is the mix of art in it. We have real life footage, audio manipulation, drawings and animation, puppetry and...well, basically youtube poops 😂
It's clear that a lot of work goes into this series which I respect greatly.

This isn't favorite analogue horror, nor my favorite internet horror media of any other genre, but I LOVE this series as a CZcams series. The progression of skill, the techniques used and the clear earnest labor that went into them, it feels like Old CZcams that continued right along into the modern media environment. I'm super excited to see more from Alex into the future. While he has room to grow (as evidenced by his consistent growth), so much of the creative process and language of film seem to come naturally to him.

Growing up with a very religious family fond of quoting Revelations, Mandela Catalogue definitely hits an uncanny valley nerve for me, but I really do love the false god scenario the series sets up. Lots of interesting “what if” questions to explore in a universe like that.

The Mandela Catalogue has lots of potential. Although it doesn't really scare me that much because especially the old videos rely a lot on cheap shock effects that feel very dated. But storywise, it's great and surprisingly deep. The implication that it wasn't god we've been worshipping the whole time and we don't even realize it is quite chilling.
As someone who has dealt with anxiety and depression for years, the helplessness, abandonment and emotional torment of the characters hit me much harder than I expected.
Overall I wouldn't describe The Mandela Catalogue as scary but rather bleak and depressing.

Even if I'm now familiar with these analog horror series, I always really like hearing other people's takes. Everything is going to hit everyone differently, and what stands out and what doesn't land is going to be different. Definitely the first time I've heard someone draw a conclusion between TMC and Fallen (which is great and hopefully more people watch it, it seems like one of those films that's just sort of disappeared to time)

My favorite part of this series is the different interpretations of the horror elements of people from different backgrounds. The religious aspect is really horrifying to people like Wendigoon, who come from a religious background. People like myself who are more agnostic are bothered by the aspects of loneliness that the alternates create.

Throwing out a suggestion comment before I watch/possibly forget: recently rewatched Caveat and really enjoyed the ghost story of it, but was left a bit wanting with final impressions and what was actually going on with the central family we meet.
    SPOILERS MAYBE??
To me it felt like there was something bigger and more ritualistic going on than just "idk they thought it was amusing" that I was really surprised didn't seem to come up in any of the reviews I could find of it. I'd love to hear your take on this movie if you've seen it and was of interest to you, I definitely came and searched your channel specifically after watching it to see if you had made a video on it! ♥

One of my main problems with analogue horror is the tendency to try and be too smart, too cryptic, too much. There's all these cryptic clues and codes and lore.
Its like Five Nights at Freddy's. I don't think any of those game's are particularly scary. But the first is definitely the most effective. Its just a simple story that plays on the inherent uncanny of animatronic animal mascots while semi humorously commenting on how absurd working on the low rung of the corporate ladder can be. Like why do I need power to keep the doors shut? Why is the power infrastructure so shitty? Why doesn' the company just dispose of these insanely dangerous suits and replace them? Because the path of least resistance and least cost is just to work around the glaring danger. I'm sure we've all worked jobs with some shady stuff going on in regards to safety. Meanwhile the supernatural aspect remains vague and mostly implied.
But every addition to the franchise added more, often contradictory detail to the lore to the point that it ceased to be scary and struggled to even be a coherent narrative.
Analogue horror for me tends to follow the same impulse. Theres always a new threat, more lore, and a web of conspiracy. It can be interesting but its just not scary.
But when I think about the fact that so much of this stuff is made by over ambitious teenagers. It makes me excited to see how they artistically develop.
