  • 5 Most Underrated Places To Live Around Indianapolis Indiana. There are so many places to live in Indianapolis, Indiana... many neighborhoods, townships, and even excluded cities like Lawrence and Speedway. When you begin to include the Indianapolis suburbs the number really begins to grow. There are a large number of well known and highly rated suburbs that surround Indianapolis. They all have their positives and negatives... although it's difficult to find too many negatives. Two of the Indianapolis Indiana suburbs are the most well known. That would be Carmel, Indiana and Fishers, Indiana. Another much smaller suburb that gets quite a lot of attention is Avon, Indiana. However, there are a number of other places that are quite nice and incredible places to live as well. They tend to fly under the radar or are "underrated" in my opinion. Take a look at this video to see which five suburbs I'm talking about and certainly give them some consideration if you are planning to move to Indianapolis, Indiana in the future.

Thank you so much for all of your videos on Indianapolis. I'm thinking of relocating from NJ, and have been stalking your channel for a couple of months now. They've been a big help, even though I'm still undecided as to whether I'll actually move, or where I might move to if I do. I really appreciate having so much substantive information available as a starting point for additional research.

Carmel and Fishers and Noblesville are in the most $$$$$$$ county in the state, and most of the homes and endless housing additions are built within a month. Check out Garfield Park, or Beech Grove, Fletcher Place, or Irvington. They're close to downtown and family friendly. Avon and Brownsburg like Fishers were tiny towns with one 4 way red flasher that have exploded with over priced and cheaply built homes. I lived in Indianapolis for 30 years. I now live south of Bloomington a love the small town life. I grew up near Noblesville. All the places he's mentioned are family friendly, but are very congested with poorly built over priced homes. I worked in Fishers and Carmel after the boom started for a large paint manufacturer/retailer as an interior designer and even the million dollar plus homes are rather poorly built.

I live in Plainfield and I really like it here. I am not a homeowner, just an apartment dweller. However in the last year or so new apartments have sprung up like weeds. This is nice as Plainfield was sorely lacking with apartment homes. Newer apartments with a ton of amenities makes for high rents, at least more than what most folks are accustomed to. My current place is nice, 35 years old, but never been updated and because of the newer places my rent nearly doubled from $900 to $1700 monthly and still no upgrades and that makes it all very frustrating. But...on the other hand, (and I know nothing about infrastructure, but it seems Ike U.S. 40/Main St./ Washington was built with potential traffic in mind. There may be a lot of cars and traffic, but the traffic moves and it is really pretty easy to get from point A to point B. This is totally unlike Avon about 6 miles north of Plainfield. That traffic is horrendous & now under major construction to widen and add traffic lanes! No thank you!! However, i don't understand why Avon gets all the new shops and restaurants, especially with access and close proximity to The Indianapolis Airport, Hotels and Interstate 70! (And Thank You for your very informative videos here, for speaking slowly and distinctly, enjoyable and informative!)

Good video! I agree with the choices. We live on the southwest side of Indianapolis, but we do all of our shopping in Plainfield. My parents live in Brownsburg. We are all originally from rural Illinois. I have lived in Indianapolis for 28 years now (I'm 53).
I personally don't like Brownsburg, but I do understand why it's on the list. I worked second shift in Brownsburg for several years. I would get off work at 3 a.m. and get pulled over and harassed by the Brownsburg cops at least once a month. This also happened to everyone I worked with. I guess if you're out driving at 3 a.m. you must be up to no good. I never got a ticket but one night in the freezing rain the cops dumped all of my CDs in the floorboard and then dumped my toolbox on top of them. Then, the cop threw my license and insurance card at me and told me to go home.
I gave a black coworker a ride home one night after work. The Brownsburg police pulled us over. They pulled me behind the car and asked 20 questions about my passenger. I finally quit answering and told them, "He's in the passenger seat. If you want to know something about him, ask him." The cop called me a smartass and let me go. This is the kind of stuff you'll have to deal with in Brownsburg.
Every time I was pulled over in Brownsburg, it was based on a lie. It was always a taillight, a license plate light, or "I think you were speeding." I still own that car and it has never had a problem with the lights. I got sick of proving it to them every time I got pulled over. Then it becomes a probable cause thing...the bars close at 3 a.m. so you must have been drinking. I don't even drink. Yet, I had to do several sobriety tests while working in Brownsburg.
When my wife and I retire, we will probably sell our house in Indianapolis and move to either Plainfield or Danville. I've really grown to like Danville over the years. It's a nice town with decent people, good places to eat, nice parks, etc., and it's still close to the things we like in Avon, Plainfield, and Indianapolis.

Not to sound like anything negative at all but prior to moving to the Indy area I never heard of Fishers or Carmel, I had heard of Avon and Plainfield. I lived in Carmel while looking for a place to build and was drawn to Westfield because it’s like the whole city is new and modern but still country, the areas that are older looking is getting a makeover. I like that it’s not easy to find an old house, it’s like the area was just built in the last few years. I really love the whole Indianapolis area and already in a few short years have a lot of pride in the area, especially Hamilton County!

Greenwood has some really nice parts. It's also a little bigger than what many might think. I like certain parts of Greenwood and some of my family lives there so we visit quite often. It just depends on what you need as a location. If it's near the Indy International Airport some parts of Greenwood could work. Others might seem like they're close but you could be looking at a 30 minute drive. Plainfield is absolutely closer.

You forgot Mooresville and Whiteland. Much more racist than Carmel or Fishers.

I have biracial children and never experienced racism in Noblesville/fishers but geeenfield definitely... I would never live there

I realize you live in Greenfield but I grew up on the far east side of Indianapolis and you forgot to mention that you need to be white because it is rule it is prejudiced and they do not like non-Caucasian people
