Totally agree that Steeltown is one of the best albums ever. I was dumbfounded, almost destroyed, when I was 17 and this album hit me hard - harder than The Crossing. It is intense, monumental, a testament to how lyrics, music and emotion can create magic. I listen to Steeltown now, 25+ years later, and I shiver at the experience. "I went down and the heat turned on me, in a steel town, when the heat turned on". May the youth of today experience BC and Stuart.
I am so encouraged by these comments. I grew up on BC. Stuart helped me survive age 16. At that poor age I recognized the brilliance of the band. I will never forget. Stuart never truly understood his wonderful impact on us. I miss him dearly every day.
more and more as I think about my history with BC and watching vid clips now, I realize more and more that BC was a band in the best and truest sense. Tony and Mark, clearly, owned the rhythm section better than anyone in the world could, but they weren't session players for BC - they were part of the art and form. And while Stuart was the lead creative mind, I marvel so much at Bruce. There are so many songs that would never make any sense or be beautiful without his magnificent guitar playing and steeltown is one of them.
Stuart - your name will never die - RIP 😘Can i just say a word for Tony - he wears the best outfits, nobody ever mentions that - his basslines are genius
I'm still sad. I love all BC and think it's great the continuation, but when Stuart died, a part of me died too. I never met him personally, but felt that we were kindred souls. I love all the music, but without Stuart's voice and passion... I wish I will have a chance to speak someday to Mark, Tony or Bruce to tell them how much they made a difference in my life when I was young, and until this day.
And I might add: I bought the record (remember them?) the day it was released. I was shocked by Steeltown. Everything about it was new, yet the critics panned it. Those fuckers. Just a Shadow created wrinkles in my youth. There is no miracle in ruin. But Stuart created an optimisim in me I never knew possible. He gave me hope through music.
Hard to believe I remember The Skids, but not Big country until East of Eden, couldn't wait for Steeltown, then Flame of the West came on first, . From then on Been supporting and following Big country and recently saw them in Cork 2022
no body could replace stewart he made this band. .. my favorite songs is where the rose is sown, wonderland, steeltown, just a shadow, in a big country.. i found his songs in mid 2000's in highschool never stopped listening..
He also ruined the band he made. He introduced his nasally americanized accent, which made his vocal sound completely superficial, he selected the producer who influenced PIOT, when he could have chosen Ted Templeman, and he allowed the PIOT album to be ruined with astonishing naivity for a guy who'd had more than 10 years industry experience at the time, and he never learned his lesson for No Place Like Home. Even his guitar style became cliched from 1988 onwards.
@@ministryofanti-feminism1493 an interesting take on the band. Some unique points 👏 What about the Buffalo Skinners album, though? Such a powerful collection of songs. The band hit back after two debatable albums, surely?
Awesome , Big country are my favourite band! am 25 and remember hearing my folks playing their music years ago, at the time I never genuinly appreciated the genius of big Stuarty Adamson. Recently listened to them again and I can now appreciate their timeless class. Seeing these old live versions of them is just fantastic!
The greatest band to come out of the 80's! Saw the boys play a few weeks back & still sound great 28 years after I first saw them. Stuart was a class act & can never be replaced. Hope you found your peace Stuart......we miss you RIP.
I've loved BC since 1983 and this remains my favourite song. I was 17 and this song absolutely killed me. Think "Norweigan Wood" by John. "Here was a refuge for those who dared". Stuart, you are still with us.
Cheers Cavalier. I had this gig on VHS, must have lost it along the way. Still play the music every day though. Nothing will ever replace the music of Big Country in my life, my one Great Thing. Thanks again - may the long road rise up to meet you. Cheers !
Stewart once said in an interview he loved playing for the British fans coz the crowd are very similar to a crowd you would get at a football match 👀😜🍀🍻🍺♠️ Very noisy and rowdy with never a dull moment 😜😂😜😂
Brilliant, thanks for posting! Especially for those of us who weren't around to experience BC at the time. Is it possible to experience nostalgia for something you never experienced in the first place?
Big country one of the best Scottish bands of all time. Bruce Watson highly highly talented music writer & one of the most under rated guitarists of our time but we have a habit of doing that to our own. The rest of the boys were magic but Stuart adamson will go down in my book as a legend. The politics in the songs are superb. That's the thing with Scottish bands of that era talking about little Scottish towns that relied on industry & maggie thatcher done her best to destroy. RIP Stuart your
This is called steeltown ................................. this means to me the passion involved in industries and the fight the scottish people had striving to see good in rebuilding through thick and thin so powerfull a track absolutly summs up muched lol The Seer James Ballantyne
unique and unmatched. despite Adamsons socialist leanings, the passion dragged me to the Hammersmith Odeon 2 nights running and I cried until my fucking eyes were raw both times.
@BC1000stars Erm.....Best album of all time? Sorry but that's a bit of a stretch. Love love love Big Country though and I am still gutted that Stuart is gone.
@BC1000stars There is no "best" album of all time. I realize your post is 2 years old but when are people going to accept that music or art or film is completely subjective. Amazing how many people feel the need to make it a competition. It's not. But yes, Steeltown is a great album. :-)

I am always returning to listen to genius..
Who the hell is it that gives these big country videos the thumbs down? What is it you're disappointed in?
Stuart seems so happy. God rest his soul..
This time will be forever.

Agreed, These guys are top-flight musicians.
Songs like this cause my soul to freeze in place. Stuart wrote things with with such a quality,
Respect.

thank you much for sharing!
These guys kicked U2's ass on many levels, and yet they were always just a shadow of U2, sadly.
Arthur Rooney II time to switch the Steelers Tune from Styx Renegade to This Celtic Classic.

had this concert on vhs video years ago
That is so true. Not many bands are better live than their studio albums. Big Country, The Alarm, The Who all are far superior live.

This is one of the best versions of this song. Big Country were better than their contemporaries. Timeless music and full of passion.
This is called steeltown ................................. this means to me the passion involved in industries and the fight the scottish people had striving to see good in rebuilding through thick and thin so powerfull a track absolutly summs up muched lol The Seer James Ballantyne
Absolutely f...in amazin proper music not like some of the sh.t we have to put up with these days
@Nigelxman no it's not a competition, it's just my opinion.
1986 Nijmegen, The Netherlands @ De Vereeniging great conceert!
Oh yeah.
S U P E R B !
unique and unmatched. despite Adamsons socialist leanings, the passion dragged me to the Hammersmith Odeon 2 nights running and I cried until my fucking eyes were raw both times.
Bruce Willys is in there Is the question
Stuarts very much nalive
@hamletsdarkhorse True but despite all his success, Bruce can't hold a candle to Big Country.
to Krystal Holland i have to agree to disagree i think Tony Butlur and Mark were total invaluble . The Seer himself. JBX
@BC1000stars Erm.....Best album of all time? Sorry but that's a bit of a stretch. Love love love Big Country though and I am still gutted that Stuart is gone.
I miss the shit out of Stuart Adamson, especially today.
fred is right
