I was a freshman in college when The Crossing came out. I was totally stunned--I never heard anything like that before. I think Steeltown remains my favorite CD of theirs. The two Steve Lilywhite produced albums of theirs is just simply amazing.
When I was 17 and heard Steeltown on the radio, I was shocked. After The Crossing, I could not imagine greater depth. I was wrong. Girl with Grey Eyes, Just a Shadow. This album changed my life completely in the span of 1 week. I cry for Stuart every day. When he left us I thougtht it was my fault, I should have reached out. He did so much for me and I did nothing for him.
Yeh ... you are right ! I met him too (in Milan after '90 concert): I remember Him talking 20 min to everybody, praying Security and Manager to wait and finally asking everybody (20/25 person) to follow and go have a beer together; friend after 2 minutes !!! Great person !!!
Know it sounds cheesy, but this song really means a lot to me. One of my favorite tunes EVER. Hadn't heard it in a while, and once I booted up this video, I almost started crying at my freaking desk LOL
This song is total power, I'm in my late 20's and I wish BC would have been one of the great bands I grew up with, but here in the States all we got really was In a Big Country, which is a glorious song that I've always loved, but it wasn't until recently that I caught that video on TV and realized I should dig deeper because I don't know of anything else they've done...so grateful for CZcams.
Hard to imagine. Well, I wasn't in Berlin, but Steeltown affected me like no other album at age of 16. I was thrust into a world that I had only thought I knew, but I didn't at all. People. The world of people. I knew persons, mostly like me, not 'those of my own kin'. Never thinking of a dream, let alone it was all that was left to hang upon. Steeltown wasn't a wake up. It was a conduit into a way of thinking that I had never heard or read. It was "there was a future of hands of skill"
It may sound stupid, but especially the intro fits just perfect in time and place. Such a great atmosphere. Those pictures of the old days are making me sad somehow. ;)
That's absolutely brilliant. I would never have expected to find footage of this concert on the internet: Big Country 19.06.1988, Berlin-Weißensee, Radrennbahn (G.D.R.) at "Friedenswoche der Berliner Jugend". My brother was there - for us this was like opening a window to rock music influenced by celtic tradition. That's just grand! From that time on this has been my favourite kind of music. Phantastic. When later, in 1991, the steelworkers striked in our town they played Steeltown on Radio4U...
This album Steeltown was brillient, mind you they all were. Stuart you were never recognised for how brillient you really were. I only wish I still had my Concert T-shirt fom the steeltown tour, sleeveless, grey in colour does anyone have one? It was only 21 years ago. "400 hundred miles, of fields of fire"
Von denen die da als Publikum stehen, haben vor dem Konzert noch nicht mal gewusst wer Big Country ist! 😁 Of those who are there as an audience, they didn’t even know who Big Country is before the concert!😁
People always go and do themselves in just when we needed them. What a shame the lad could not have ridden his storm.Legacy left though and unsurpassed.Jim.Liverpool.
Stuart was brilliant, all of those guys are. He did a lot of creative guitar work at this concert. My favorite version of this song is on Without the Aid of a Safety Net, far more hard edged than this version.
you are right about that version on without the aid of a safety net 100% thats the best version i've ever heard. I tried to put it on here but couldn't find it. have you seen it already?
The legend that was Stuart Adamson

I listen to BC every day, for the past 29 years. I can't imagine a world without this music. I hope Mark, Tony and Bruce get it. thank you.

There was a lot of BC in the US but it was very hard to find, really was only in the hole in the wall record stores....
Met Stuart a few times at the Carnegie centre Gym in Dunfermline in the early 90's. Great guy had time for everyone, didn't have a superstar ego.
One of the absolute BEST LIVE BANDS ever: big country.......🔥🔥🔥🔥
I've never heard a voice that sounds quite like Stuart's. He is greatly missed.
The best band hands down, massively underrated!!!!!
Rest in peace Stuart, you will always be sadly missed in Ireland and worldwide
this band always touches your emotions...80s the BEST

Scottish genius is rare and, unfortunately, fragile. God bless Stew and the boys.
Totally love this song -Thanks for posting - sheer brilliance
This song reminds me of my dad- worked 40 years in the mills...

What a bloody waste, S.A was a genius.
Butler rules. Keyboard is horridly out of place here.
those keyboards parping along almost turn bc into a comedy band....love the band but they could have ditched this experiment sooner.....shut up josh
