I once tried to make a fish tank out of a cathode ray tube television. I had no idea if it was pressurized or a vacuum. I decided to use a BB gun to pierce the tube. Just to be cautious at the last second I decided to set the cathode tube on the floor of my spare bedroom shut the door slightly, hid behind it and pointed the BB gun around the corner in case something unexpected happened.
Something unexpected happened.
Creating wormholes in your garage again?!
The insides of vacuum tubes just LOOK so good. It's like something from cheap science fiction...
Someone has been watching the crazy canadian way too much :)
The glass isn't leaded, by the way. That would be horrible for the tens of thousands of angry pixies waiting in line at the business end.
I always thought they were. Why would that be, you want to keep them all inside, right? Surely at least some CRTs use leaded glass, at least that's what some Googling is telling me.
Well, think about it.
Multiple kilovolts + lead...
i think hes refering to the coating inside the glass which doesnt come in...CONTACT... with the electrodes. but also leaded glass is made with lead oxide. im pretty sure its non conductive
I'm doing my best to think about it! lol
The Wikipedia article for lead glass mentions its use in CRTs to block any unwanted X-rays. I assumed the small quantity of lead mixed in wasn't enough to create conductivity but I like +sometimes idea of lead oxide not being conductive. :)
It's very rare. The x-rays CRTs generate can't get outside the glass.
Nobody:
Subtitles when you are grinding: [music]
4:05 the sound you never want to hear when you open up a compact Macintosh
There is just easy cheat to let in the air with that dremmel: just leave that bakelite connector on and drill a hole into that stump on the end until you "fall in" ;)
A video by "This Old Chris", excellent! Shades of AVE!
Now, work out a way of getting those cathodes to glow, build a suitable "carrying stick" from aluminium and attend the next cosplay thing in your area with your "death-dealing" ray-gun!
lol
Those tubes make really cool ceiling lights.
Punched vacuum on dozens of old scope CRTs. Put them in box. Take small, sharp screw driver from back and drive it right through center of keyed phenolic in middle of rear connector. To cut glass on neck use nichrome wire and power supply (hot wire). Ought to see the gun on a Tek 7844... Dual Beam. Absolute work of art! Be certain to discharge the front cap! 12 (or more!) KV will definately get your attention if it passes through your body...
They look like tops of mascato bottles!
the dremel sounds like it is wining like its secretly saying:
nooooo! whyyyyy! nooooo why not again! noooooo!
Looks like you need some Astro Glide to go with your Astro Grip, then your hand will make a better steady rest.
That must have been where it all went wrong!
I like the friendly jabs to other channels...although I'm thinking it might mean that I watch too much youtube since I actually recognize the references. Looking forward to seeing what you do with these parts.
Interesting idea!
You forgot to call it a 'Vijao' :)
Found it very interesting seeing you take them apart, never knew they were a vacuum
Glad you liked it!
That smell is Bakelite dust probably, I wouldn't breathe that in.
dremals work pretty good for cutting glass
awesome video. have you considered trying to open up those tubes like a lampworker would? I think it would have been way easier if you used a torch. best wishes man, keep up the good work!
I really wanted to but I've only ever seen them do it with a special lathe that can hold and rotate both sides at the same time. I honestly thought this would cut them cleanly but I was mistaken. Fortunately, for what I'm doing with them it won't matter; but I'd try a torch next time. :)
Interesting bio-engineered tailstock you've got there.
It is like an old TV tube easy to breake then end with a pair of pliers
skookum :)
LOL' THE KEY IN THE CHUCK IS NOT THE PROBLEM....
There are much easier and cleaner ways to cut the neck. Just wrap a turn of resistor wire around it, and power it up until it's red hot. The glass will crack along where the resistor wire was, perfectly smoothly.
mrnmrn1 now I wanna do something fun with that!
I was seriously concerned that something would go wrong and you would accidentally knock your tailstock onto the floor and damage it for the sake of this glass tube that could have been cut with a handheld glass cutter right at the coating line.
You know, or injure yourself. but mostly I was worried about the lathe... :)
Let's confess it. We all want to make silly stuff speaking like AvE while explaining techincal stuff, but we all know we won't be as the original, so we give up. At least, Chris had the bravery to give it a try anyway.
Release the schmoo
No, capture the schmoo!
I can't argue with that ^^
Ahh..... must be an AVE subscriber!!!
Isn't everybody?! :P
son of a didley thanks for a good time
OMG, buy a book on machine OH&S, pleeeze!
just for my records that second one was the first tube witch looked to be a nice cut in the first place and would have been the when where to "quit"? id have used my extensive hammer collection and started from the big ''fat Albert'' bat end and worked my way in like a chick coming in to the world out o the egg.
lol
ill take that as a yes :)
that dremel you preserve for what?? there are diamond disks for it...it would've been more safe ! you put the tube in the lathe..
Put UV light inside.
50 shades of AVE, now that I'd watch.
That I would actually NOT like to watch, lol
just all pink bits held with hockey tape ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww
Ave lol
Don't copy AvE so much, be yourself and you're likely to get more views
