Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne is a third-person shooter video game developed by Remedy Entertainment and published by Rockstar Games. The game is a sequel to Max Payne and is followed by the game Max Payne 3.
In Max Payne 2, the player controls Max Payne, a former DEA agent for the New York City Police Department (NYPD) and a fugitive framed for murder of his best friend and fellow cop Alex, by the corrupted agent, B.B., in New York City during the events of Max Payne. Two years after the events of the first game, Max has cleared his name and is now an NYPD detective. He reunites with Mona Sax, whom he met in the previous game, as they set out to resolve a conspiracy of death and betrayal, finding the Inner Circle in the center of it all.
Video game critics gave Max Payne 2 highly positive reviews. Praise focused on its action and story, while criticism targeted its short length. Despite the positive reception, the game sold poorly, leading Rockstar Games' parent company Take-Two Interactive to cite Max Payne 2 's sales as a cause for the company's reforecast finances of 2004. Max Payne 2 received several industry awards, including Outstanding Art Direction at the Golden Satellite Awards 2004, and Editors' Choice Awards from GamePro, IGN, and GameSpy. - Hry
At the rate Max ages with each new game, in Max Payne 4 he will be doing bullet time from a wheelchair through an assisted living facility.
Scwurt I'd play that shit, that sounds badass.
+Kolbe Howard Agreed
Curt Randall Wolfenstein 2 lmao.
Bum Bullet Time
Ok that is funny and badass at the same time.
Always prefered MP2 to the first game. Shooting felt extremely satisfying with those Havok physics and level design was just amazing, especially theme park and appartment buildings. And I still remember a lot of character dialogue and TV show quotes like it was yesterday,
Like the janitor singing: "And we keep driving. ..."
+SnitchesonHitlist "into the night, its a late goodbyeeeee, such a late goodbyeeeeee" haha love that
+Icon of Sin MiRroRs aRe MoRe fUn tHaN TeLiVisOn
Neighbor of the beast, get it?
Gazorpazordfield II Yeah I get it.
mp2 was superb for me. first time I played it I finished it 3 times in the row increasing difficulty
Same here. It's the best entry in the series for me, even though I regard the entire trilogy really high.
DinoCopRulezTheWORLD completely brilliant game, definitely one of my personal top 3 ever. I did the same too and I've played it more times than I can count
this brings me back to my 10 year old self carefully checking my bedrooms door each time i encounter mona sax so mom wouldnt catch me.
I used to do that with Halo 4 Cortana lmao
Great game. It's so much fun blasting the living shit out of a dozen bad guys, reloading the checkpoint and then doing it over and over again.
+Serpico's Beard Serpico is a classic movie. Must have watched like a million times by now, and never grew tire of it.
Serpico's Beard I have replayed that piano scenario more times than I can count. Something about slowing down the melody being played and chucking a molotov before opening fire is so satisfying.
Everytime you say "Sonny Jim" you sound like some sort of drill sergeant. :)
+“The“Caretaker
It sounds very forced to me.
DerPafferfish very forced.
DerPafferfish Of course it's forced, how else do I seamlessly use the word "sonny jim"?
Well, I guess one doesn't. Why even sonny jim?
I don't necessarily mind it, just do whatever you want fam. I'll still watch.
There's a special place in my heart for this game. I can't tell you why but I will always love it even with all it's flaws. Great video.
what flaws?
+David0vič the plot is the biggest flaw, IMO.
Max Payne 2 was such a good game. Loved every second of the story. My only complaint is that it felt a bit too easy, but that's not always a bad thing when you just want to blow dudes away.
Also, I didn't realize all the bullet time differences until this review. Good work GGGman
I actually like max Payne 2 more than the first one .....
***** Same here. And I loved Max Payne 1 but 2nd one exceeded my expectations.
And i actually think Max Payne 3 is the best Rockastar Only game!
***** In my case its exactly the opposite .... MP 1 and 2 had awesome storytelling and atmosphere where MP3 had a story that reminded me of a depressing cheap Crime movie ...but i liked it alot !
+MadmanGoneMad2012 Rockstar didn't make Mafia 2.
MadmanGoneMad2012 youre a company fucking moron
Max Payne 2 in HD remastered would be cool
no need, game looks incredible in higher resolutions. it honestly held up so damn well
and one way to improve it infinitely is by playing it with the first person view mod
it's so some phenomenal shit
@@Mimoudoesgames agreed
This is probably my favorite game in the series overall. I would say the first game had the better story mainly because Max wasn't as plot armoured, but the story in this also pretty good and has an amazing ending. The gameplay in this game is a lot better because you actually get to use the bullet time more instead of just hiding into cover and then shoot dodge.
Out of all 3 Max Payne 2 is the best one and a masterpiece.
Agreed.
Thats correct sir
I love the second 1
the 3rd is the best
@@LiceDuhaPRODUCTIONS to be hones I really think i like the 3rd the best, kinda wish they would remake the 1st and 2nd in the same engine n stuff.
"The shooting is so over the top" [that it makes the game one of a kind and just downright awesometacular]. Really, thats like the first time Havok physics were implemented and that "lunar" settings for bodies they went with makes for ocean of joy. Shame there isnt so many great mods as for MP1, but DAMN - GOTY 2003 and still one of the best shooters around.
I much prefered the 2nd one to the first, the first was tediously difficult towards the end. Number 2 is just fun to play. The only thing i like more in the first one is the Asir Plaza last level, the mansion level in number 2 didn't have the same epic feel to it.
The only 2 things I didnt like about MP2, were the very low blood effects and weaker weapon sounds. Normally I don't do this, but you guys may check out my MP2 Enhanced mod (ModDB), which gives stronger, but not overkill blood effects, with most of the shooting sounds from MP1 and awesome reloading sounds, which also fix them.
I still very slightly prefer the first game due to the unmatched dark atmosphere.
Could you link a download to your mod here? I’d love to try it out.
@@overdrive6687 it's in the MP2 addons section I think
Elements of style
I wouldn't entirely agree that the writing style is the same. You get elements of it here and there but ultimately the original had much more flowery language and elaborate metaphors that were really fun to read and listen to.
Cool seeing you on this channel, keep up the good vids!
Turbo Button 2 had just as many metaphores, Max spouts out pure genius all the time in 2 and I feel like they had much more weight and meaning than in the original which was just typical noir detective metaphors.
The original's was very much a Finnish dude doing his best approximation of an American noir, that is to say, it's comically bad. It's much easier to take Max seriously this time also due in part to much improved presentation
@@SpyderDragonDude couldnt disagree more with you
I never played the first one because I heard this was better. I absolutely loved it, mostly for all the in-game moments that happened inbetween gun fights. Hearing the enemies plan their attack on you, or have a tarantino-like conversation really made the game world feel great.
+Priest Bob wtf, dude. Play the first game...
***** Play the game! And don't forget using this widescreen mod right here: thirteenag.github.io/widescreen_fixes_pack#sec2
***** Second was better but i suggest you plat the first one as well
+Rei dos Vermes I knew someone else had to love daggerfall, I knew it.
Victim of Lag Fine fine fine I'll buy it on steam, it better be as good.
Your reviews are so great, they make me want to play these games all over again.
Thank you for accepting my friend request. I enjoy your CZcams videos, they are a breath of fresh air. Its rare to find someone who says what they mean and your narration is fantastic. Great delivery, to the point and great metaphors. Thank you for covering the niche games, it was very fun to learn about such unqiue shooters. Take care and have a fantastic day, if you can.
best part about it was the theme song
I don't know why this game stuck with me so much but it's easily one of my favourite games of all time. It's pitch black humour and deeply melancholy tone always stay in my mind. Something about it's existential bleakness speaks to me. Also it's just very fucking fun to play with simple, challenging and dynamic shootouts. Every year or so I tend to come back to this game and run through it
Max Payne 1 had the atmosphere, Max Payne 2 had the gameplay, Max Payne 3 had the gameplay and the graphics. BUT! Max Payne 3 was an okay game, but not exactly a great sequel. It was made entirely by Rockstar to let Remedy focus on Alan Wake, hence why the story was not as great. From a very noir story that Sam Lake, the writer on Max Payne, specialises in, Rockstar made a rambo out of Max Payne, which didnt feel that good. But overall it was not a bad game. However, if there will be another MP game at any time, I hope Sam Lake will be behind it.
yeah agree, 3 was a good game but not very good Max Payne story.. hopefully no new games in the futute tbh.. it can only get worse.
I remember my first time playing Max Payne 1. When the bullet from the sniper rifle slowed down as it hit its enemy, I was hooked. When I found out Max Payne 2 was coming out, I was so excited. I remember buying the Game Informer with a cover story on MP2, and I looked at it for months. Max Payne 2 was my favorite game growing up. A part of me hopes they revisit the series and take it back to its roots.
The ragdoll physics never fails to make me laugh 😂 I’ve lost count how many times I’ve playing this and the first one on the PC, truly a great game
Max Payne 2 was probably the only game I played where the romantic sub plot actually touched me. I emphasized a lot with Max and how sad he was and how the shooting rampage was basically an outlet for all of his frustrations, but then Mona Sax came along and they both comforted each other and I actually sighed in relief when they were together.
My biggest gripe with Max Payne 3 was how that entire meaningful Mona Sax sub plot was tossed aside with a single line. It genuinely made me mad.
I didn't understand the differences in the bullet time between the first and second fully until this video. Thanks Gman!
Splendid video, ive decided to pick this up.
Also, i don't like to warble like the crowds do, but i really enjoy these reviews. They are fair and very satasfying to watch. Thanks for all this!
Subscribed since your F3 review!
I was addicted to this game back in days. I completed it like for 20 times without cheat codes, 5 times with it and 2 times with trainers.
I could finish this game in one day on the hardest difficulty without any savings and with not a single death. That's how I loved this game. And I never gave a shit to story. I liked game physics very much.
A new review makes the day so much better!
Great review. Max Payne 2 is one of my all time favourite games. Played and completed it multiple times. Also completed Hard boiled difficulty mode I think it was?. I also loved the challenges too. Thanks again for the review.
Damn your reviews are so phenomenal!
Detective 'Winters'???? If I'm not mistaken, wasn't she called Detective Winterson????
1:35
Loved this game, played the hell out of it when i was young, it is always a pleasure that you not only review new games, keep up the good work good sir
PS: Would be really fun to see you review DMC 3 :)
I've been enjoying it off XBLA on my 360, it still holds up great today. Great profile mate!
Dat amusement park level.... :3
Creepy & original as fuck, ammiryte...=3?
I still to this day love this game! Available mods make it even more fun.
MP2 is definitely a big improvement over the first as far as difficulty and gameplay goes. MP1 is still untouched as far as tone and writing goes, MP2 and 3 especially don’t hold a candle to the first when it comes to the neo noir feel.
I'm glad you have the reverence for these games that I do. I played these when I was like, 12 and 14 and they have always set a high bar for what I think that a single player shooter should be.
My Dear Valentine...
I can still hear the voice of my Lord...
My Lady...
I remember playing the demo for this game on a family PC barely capable of running it. To add to the fact on this game's physics, this was one of those games where I felt like I could interact with object like toilets, TVs, cabinet doors, etc...
Fantastic review! Your channel certainly deserves more attention. Can't wait for the third part. Now review RAGE...Sonny Jim!
Great review GGG!
You did a video without swearing! Good for you!
I love them all, 1st one for its nostalgia and it still being a blast
2nd one for its over the top shooting and overall wackiness
3rd one for its mature story and fantastic ending
Really like your reviews, can't wait for MP3.
Beaten the original tons of times, only played through MP2 twice. Playing through MP3 for a second time.
I remember being a wee lad and watching a minute of game-play footage on gamespot when this came out. The player threw a grenade and fired dual ingrams at an airborne cleaner as he hit some corrugated metal door and slide down the wall, 11 year old me completely lost his shit.
one of the greatest games of all time
5:52, dude that´s what I called cleaning the wall with style
Say what you want...
I think MP2 is a much better game than the 1st
Specially the shooting mechanics and gameplay...
However, MP 1 did really have great atmosphere, puzzles and ambience.
Another great review!
it's in my top 15 games of all time just for the atmosphere alone
a true masterpiece, indeed.
Max Payne 1 & 2 was one of my favorites back when i had my XBox360. The whole Noir style story draws me in. Plus i got to see that sexy Mona Saxx & funny man Vlad. Then theres the Noir style music the violin solo during narrator cutscnes. I think Max Payne was.ahead of its own time. Only game that could give us a good Noir style.cop story was L.A.Noire. i love the classic liner (Italian Accent) "Dont Answer That ! It Was.....Ahh
.What You Call It A Rhetorical Question....." 😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄
Personally I thought 2 was the best game in the series
I know this is eight years old, but coming back to this after years since it was released.Im happy I can complete this as an adult vs a mindless child.
+Gggmanlives Hello. Like your videos. I was wondering if at some point in the future you could review American McGee's Alice for pc.
I always come back to this game after I beat max Payne 1 which I come back to them 3 or so times a year for nostalgia
Payne 2> 1> 3. That's how it works for me.
Great review.
Yeah, this game was masterclass
I never thought the original would be topped, but Remedy did just that. Both are two of my favorite games of all time.
hey great review gggman I can't wait for the MP3 review. and might add.....would you be able to review the Last of Us?
I played this game so much I used to find ways to throw myself into the end game cut scenes lol
The very first game I have installed on my very first computer. Still one of my favorites. Also the music...
7:55 I play this game series as a yearly anniversary and this is by far the funniest death I have ever seen..
I always looked at the original Max Payne as more of a action horror noir game, while The Fall of Max Payne is more of an action love story noir and the 3rd is more action Man on Fire/City of God type. I love all three.
You didn't mention the biggest improvement: max no longer has that permanent grimace face. Seriously though, maxpayne1&2 and fear1&2 are superb slow-mo shooters.
that art is crisp. love it. would you/are you planning on reviewing near-future releases like doom, rise of tomb raider, deus ex mankind, mgsv, hitman, fallout 4 [prly a given]? peace.
BrucelEEeeeee Yeah I will be covering most of those games.
Can't wait for your thoughts on the third one.
He may say it takes 6 hours to complete but when I first played this when it came out it took me like a week
I beat this game yesterday, for the second time, man, so much nostalgia since i was ten :D
Love this one. Beat it in one night back in high school when it came out. Good times
Seeing that you enjoyed the Max Payne games(I assume), I suggest you try playing Total Overdose if you haven't already. It's pretty much Max Payne except with acrobatics, way more craziness and GTA like open world.
I had no idea the bullet time worked differently in this one. I don't think I ever saw that spinning reload animation either. Guess it's time to play them all again.
Do a review of The Chronicles of Riddick - Escape from Butcher Bay. It's a very good game.
ArcaneThinker this
ArcaneThinker He'll eventually do a review m8, just be patient.
ArcaneThinker I'll drink to that
Andrej Gamer4Life
Till then I will say the same thing on every new review he makes , just in case he doesnt forget :)
good request
I played this when I was 9.... I remember my cousin breaking a bootleg back from college and installed it on my family pc for me. Felt bad for vinny LOL
I finished it the same day I installed it, blasting people's faces off in slow mo and the plot kept me going. But I looked at the playtime after I finished it, it says 4 hours, but somehow I felt I've play this game for 7 or 8 hours.
Here I am watching the review for this game again, and after this I'm going to play MP3! Got all three games on steam sales few days ago .
gggman, what are your top favorite MP2 mods?
Mine would definetely be Lobby shootout, equilibrium, no fear, disco inferno and FPS mod. The latter one i'm very interested to hear your opinion on.
and great review, as always
Cinema and FPS were great.
Max Payne reminds me of Kill Bills main char as they both get hounded on and has had everything thrown at them and yet they still get up and keep going on regardless of how serious there injuries are.
I remember when this came out.It was revolutionary with its physics based gameplay
The next Max Payne game should take place in Canada in the wilderness where Max has decided to live. He only comes out of retirement because of a murder in the local small Canadian town...The local police department is ran by a corrupt club owner.
If you haven't yet I would recommend looking into the max payne 2 custom campaigns, there are some great ones out there.
For me all three games are extremely good I like first one a little more than the second and third but it's only because it was the first one I played and it's such a great trilogy that I wouldn't really know which one is the best one
also Poets of the Fall is freaking amazing
2 was awesome, but I think the 1st has much more charm, I was much more interested in the story progression as max got deeper and deeper in the bowels of the plot and the city. And I liked the animations in 1 better than the ragdolling of 2, except in the high building level.
I've replayed this one every now and then, and I'll continue this trend 'till the day I can't
have you thought about reviewing the first system shock game ?
This review is insanity xD ! This is the best Max Payne game ever made.
It has one of the best storylines of any videogame ever written, and it has ALL the qualities of the first's gameplay. It's not as short as it's made out to be, as the first one is around 8 - 10 hours whereas the second one is 5 - 7 hours.
If it seems now like Max Payne "has a superpower" it's because it helps with the balancing issues that the first one had in it's difficulty. You won't be dying a million times trying to get over one scene, and neither will enemies have poor animations that interrupting you from killing them.
Will you ever take a look at Remedy's other series, Alan Wake?
+CluelessDetective Not sure.
Gggmanlives Trust me, Alan Wake is really good and the light mechanic is interesting. Poets of the Fall, the guys who did Late Goodbye, make a return. Amercican Nightmare is okay but not nearly as enjoyable as the original
CluelessDetective
I know it's really good I *have* played it. I just don't know if I will review it.
Gggmanlives Fair enough
MP1 has a dedicated bullet time button as well, you just needed to be careful not to press it while standing still
Are you going to review more third person shooters? That would be great
Samuel Chesser Yeah I plan to.
gggman, most badguys wear armor in this one, if u can control time u theoretically can give anyone wings with point blank shooting from ak-47 but yes, there are who don't and it's just a cool feature
I like MP2's gameplay better than 1's (especially because it's not cheap as all dicks), but I think I like 1's campaign better. Maybe it's just because it's longer?
EDIT: Also, first time around for both games, MP1 took me about 6 hours while 2 took me around 4.1 is probably closer to 5 and 2 closer to 3 as I spent a considerable amount of time dicking around in the cinematics, and for 1, the training area.
7:26 is that Sam Lake on the cardboard?
Agreed, I think gameplay wise the 2nd May be better but I still enjoyed the first one more, maybe because of the tone.
6:10 Gameplay-story juxtapositions aren't always bad, look at the Yakuza series for example.
i enjoyed the this game more than the first one. the bullet time was better, graphically anyway, voice acting is superb and just has more replay value in my opinion. i lost count how many times i have played it. even my friends enjoyed it way more than the first title.
Ahhhh... Havok physics, how I miss you.
Wow, i've never heard someone who called MP2 a back sheep and i lked a lot that point of view, thanks again buddy, see you soon
[checks ID]
... ... ... my name's not Sunny Jim...
Max Payne 2. The most incredible sequel I have ever played. Such great story telling and fun gameplay.
Could you review some Kickstarter projects such as like Shovel knight for example?
mohammed bluelighting Maybe in the future.
Sure thing.
Hey, Gman, have you considered starting a Patreon? I really enjoy your videos and would like to contribute a little something something. I don't always agree with you but I appreciate the professional quality of your writing and videos just the same.
gimpinmypants I haven't thought about it to be honest.
Yep and remedy just came out with news on Alan Wake apparently they bought back the license and they're in the works to make the sequel to Alan Wake this is going to be fun
