Another great way to mask off the tires(if you don't have the dip release) ive done many times in the past whether it was plasti dip or spray painting wheels. Take 2 decks (I believe you need 2) of playing cards and stick them in between the very edge/lip of the rim and tire then overlap the cards around the entire wheel. It greatly reduces overspray on the tires while you spray paint the wheels.

@@Bvsterrrrrrrrr ah really didn’t think they was that cheap. But still index cards are better they’re bigger and you use less of them for the same thing and less chance of over spray . It’s just the way I’ve always done it.

Another good tip I learned is after a few solid coats, move the car forwards or backwards to achieve a 180degree rotation on the wheels. After that, coat the wheels another 2 or 3 times for maximum coverage.

This is really helpful. Idk why so many people hate on dipping the wheels. When you do it right like you emphasize, it saves hundreds and even thousands depending on the wheels you have if you get then powder coated
The warm water tip is something I wish I had when I did my first wheel dip, it makes a world of difference, especially in December in Ohio, even in the garage. It goes from a splatter-finish spray into something that behaves a lot like regular spraypaint.

i wouldn't be concerned with fit as much as the dip coming off whenever you go to take the wheel off. Or put the wheel back on for that matter if you took it off to apply the dip
I learned the hard way that warming the cans up before spraying is essential when you live in New England. Cans went from spraying thick chunks of goo to spraying a very fine mist. Good thing it was peelable!

Ordered this kit to do my wheels on my $Runner TRD ORP.. Excited to get it done.
I dipped my C6 Corvette wheels, i removed the wheels, cleaned and sprayed the huge barrels also...then painted the lugs seperately with Rust-Oleum. Turned out amazing and if i ever want to reverse the results just peel it off, i did 7 nice thick coats, almost a can and a half per wheel.

AB Khan great! I followed this tutorial to the letter after purchasing their dip kit and I’ve now had my wheels dipped since I made this comment last year. I had no runs in the dip and they have held up really well. No pick spots, or worn spots in the dip on the wheels at all.

I wish I had this video when I plastidipped my wheels. The tip about not laying the wheels flat would have been incredibly helpful in not getting a textured look on some of the parts of the wheel.

@@hello-ef4bn Yeah, I definitely didn't have the funds for that to redo it. I just left it be but now after having the tires replaced a few times, the plastidip is lifted and the underneath is rusty, so it'd be more of a pain to redo it.

Nice form with the spray can, like a real paint gun.
Move-press to spray-stop spray- stop moving.
In that order.
It will stop build up at the start or finish and give an even coat.
This was the 5 video I watched and all of the others laid the wheels down and or didn't have the proper spray technique.

What did you do to avoid dipping the M and BMW badges? It didn't look like you taped them at all and just sprayed over them?
When I dipped my wheels a few weeks ago, I found it really difficult to get even decent coverage on all surfaces without moving the car to turn the wheels. After moving it, I was amazed how little coverage some parts of the spokes had, even though I tried to cover them with the first few coats. Admittedly, the can is much more likely to spray huge particles of product if you're using it at an aggressive angle, which is the only way to get good coverage on all surfaces during the early coats.
Depending on the style and design of the wheel - it's going to be necessary to rotate the wheel half way through the coats. We cover this in the Complete Guide video. There's no way you can hit every spoke properly without rotation.
Dipyourcar shows that in another video. They said to move the car half way through the job so the bottom spokes are exposed. Just be careful not to jam the plastic bag into your brakes.
MrRangerZr1 I did watch the complete guide and knew I'd have to move the car. I just wish I had moved it earlier and more often, actually, not just once mid-way through the process.
You also make a good point about the bags. The space between my caliper and the wheels is so small that the bags were essentially jammed between them, which messed things up a bit both when moving the car and removing the bags. In any case, I have useful experience for next time, and I do plan to redo my wheels soon.

What best way to fix rips on lugs when changing or rotating wheels?
When you need to take off your wheels and rotate your tires I imagine that the coating will come off around the lugnuts and perhaps get scuffed in some spots. Is it easy to touch up without it looking like it's been touched up, or do you really need to take it all off and redo the entire wheel

How well do the lug nuts hold up when you take the car to get the tires rotated? What about when you need new tires and the wheels have to be removed from the tires and balanced, etc...Do I have to do the whole process over again?

Fozi, I thought you had move the car forward a bit to get access to the blind spot which you couldn't see normally?
I like this technique instead of removing each tire and laying it flat. I would've covered the tires and car panels. Other than that, it looks great. Also, I prefer a gloss black color.

PSA about leaving wheels on the car or not:
I decided to dip the wheels on my white Elise a nice matte black.
As it's quick and easy for me to remove the wheels, I took them off for easier cleaning and access for spraying.
Here's the problem: the space around the bolts is so tight that while putting the dipped wheels back on the car, the wrench touched the dip just enough to turn and tear it off.
All the work was for nothing and I had to remove all of the beautiful fresh dip.
If your wheels are designed in a way that there's not much space around the bolts and there's a risk of touching the dip while wrenching them back in, do NOT remove your wheels for dipping.
I hope this will save somebody the trouble I went through.

just use a micro fiber towel. over spray comes off of paint so fuckin easy.

Man you helped stop my life from being ruined because I would've done exactly that. Not only that, the plasti-dip gear would've cost me almost as much as a new set of rims, so I may as well just buy another set of rims in the color I want.

Dumb question(s) What happens when I get my tires rotated every 5,000 miles? Will the recessed area around the lug nuts be all scuffed up when the socket wrench is applied? When this is done the balancing weights are most always moved around, so how do you retouch?
I'm going to do this with the wheels off the car. Any suggestions for masking off the lug holes, wheel center bore, and the valve stem, so the dip doesn't peel when getting new tires or changing a flat?

One of the caps got clogged while I was using it, luckily I had a bunch of graffiti caps so I finished the job with a NYC fat cap

Just got finished with my third can on a set of 15” wheels. Do you think I need to do a fourth can? I’ve probably done about 6 thick coats after the initial rough coat. I’m also going to be applying Metalizer

Did my motorcycle runs a few years ago. Loved it. I removed the dip last year when I mounted new tires.
Redipping this year. I have a few cans of red and black. If I put 3-4 coats of black and then 2-3 cans of red would the red stay a little darker? I had a few things dipped in the red last year and it seemed a little to bright.
I was thinking if I kept the red coats lower then some of the black would barely be visible, making the red look a little darker maybe. Thoughts?

Great video. Only question I have is about the lug nuts. After plati dipping as shown can you still get a socket on them? As it seems coating them would change the MM size. Is there any problems with that?

How would you recommend fixing tears on the lug nuts from taking the wheels off?
use a stencil or sharp tool and cut out the area of Plastidip where the lug sits to that it will not twist and pull the rest of material from the surrounding area.

I used the Anthracite Grey for my winter rims. I sprayed my rims prior to the tires being installed on the rims. I knew that as soon as the impact gun came into contact with the lug nuts, it would immediately ruin/tear the Plasti-Dip from the chrome nuts. Thus, I went out and purchased some black lug nuts instead. For myself, I think the black lug nuts look absolutely awesome set into the Anthracite Grey rims!!
D* W* usually the black is just coated on the lug nuts , did the black stay on the lug nuts that you bought? Or did it get scratched or worn off?
@@honoredsage4946 Yes, the black was just coated on the lug nuts that I purchased. The first winter changeover, my mechanic got the tires mounted without scratching up the coating on the lug nuts too much. But after the changeover back to summers, then again to winters, the coating on the lug nuts were at the point that - with winter salt and elements taking their toll - they were all rusted up by the end of the 2nd winter.
But, for myself, to have the look of the black lug nuts set into the dark grey rims, I will gladly shell out $50 (Canadian) every two years to replace the nuts with new ones.
I wish I could still sit on my feet like that. Those limber years are long gone.

@@dallaslegend9460 pretty well actually. The biggest time sink was prepping the wheels. I didn't get the dip release so I taped the tires. The other odd thing was when I got to the last 3rd of the can it was coming out in large chunks. Not sure if that's because it was 5 years old or if the can's temp got to low. I did put them in hot water before starting.

Well he sprayed them in the video so I’m assuming at some point he used the dip release on the emblem without showing it in the video.
It'll break off at the seam, plasti dip pulls apart cleanly at any sharp angle as long as you're pulling away slowly and not peeling away.

I was wondering if there was a way to have a deep black finish with a colored sheen to it? Like it's black but when the sunlight hits the car at a certain angle you can get a colored reflection. Would a colored juice in the clear coat on a black dip have that effect our would it have to be a very fine flake in the clear coat? I'm hoping for a black car with a purple shift, I guess.

I dipped my wheels, but when remounting then on the car something made me nervous! I’m tightening my lugnuts against rubber instead of the aluminum wheel. Feels strange doing that! And the torque won’t be proper?
Is one can of dip enough per wheel if I plan to do the barrel of the rim as well?

Great video, question though. If you start with a "quick coat" will the next 3-4 heavier coats stick to it and also peel the lighter coat the next time you peel?
What about the lug nuts and the piece to unscrew for you to.put air in your tires. Will the plastic dip come off when you have them unscrew at some point when tire pressure is low, change springs or rotors
How does this product hold up when changing tires out?
it's gonna peel off due the the process required for mounting and dismounting. While factory painted finishes go unharmed, the dip will start to peel and get damaged which is basically unavoidable.
I used this same color (Anthracite Grey) on my winter rims. I have gone through 4 winters now of swapping them out and the Plasti-Dip looks just as great as when I initially did it. The only problem area was the lug nuts. The dip peeled off the chrome lug nuts on the first rims changeover. To rectify this problem, I purchased black lug nuts instead. The black lug nuts added a super nice contrast to the Anthracite Grey rims!!
