    Today we pit ‪@SouthMainAuto‬ 's Snap-On PH3050B air hammer vs the Matco MT2916 to see if spending $430+ allows you to enjoy THE most powerful .401" shank air hammer on the market over the Mac Tools, Harbor Freight Chief and Ingersoll Rand 119MAX. We really appreciate everyone who has lent us these air hammers in this series.

    This is the 5th tile project we've done where we've removed the old tile before installing new tile, and the first one with this tool czcams.com/users/postUgkxqqoaX03nrziKwF7Bjjcc71YzLEleMvOS . I want to cry for all the unnecessary work we've done in the past. With this tool, we removed tile surrounding a fireplace, as well as the hearth tile, set in loads of cement, in less than an hour. I highly recommend this tool. It was easy to use, and very satisfying watching the tile literally fall off the wall.

    you should test high flow air fittings, like the milton purple v-style and the flexzilla they sell on the matco truck. 20 bucks worth of fittings is a cheaper upgrade than buying a whole new gun

    • @disgruntledegghead6923
      @disgruntledegghead6923 Před 2 lety +9

      This all depends on your air supply and plumbing though. I don't care how big the fitting is, if you don't have volume and pressure no fitting you can buy will make any significant difference.
      Save yourself a few bucks and just thread the hose directly to the tool.

I made a 1/2" adaptor with a spot for a 7/8" wrench to brake stuff lose, cupped hammer head for driving in grounding rods or concrete anchors, 3/4" drill chuck so I can use it as a big drill and lastly a .401 shank adaptor for air hammer bits. • @Slane583
    @Slane583 Před 2 lety +16

    While not everyone will agree with me, IMO, if I'm resorting to an air-hammer to get something out it's because whatever I tried previously didn't work so now I'm resorting to more force. So I could careless if the trigger is precise enough to give a neck massage. At this point we're well pass a neck massage and onto using our biggest sledge hammer we own. Since I'm not a professional anything my choice would be the Chief. It's easily accessible for me vs waiting for a tool truck to show up on its' own terms, it's a quarter of the Snap-On's price, and is essentially making 85-90% of the Snap-On's power rating. There's a reason one is $140 and the other is $500, professionals working in such jobs require precision. The average DIY'er does not, the air hammer is just an aid to make a hard task a little easier. :)

      @Slane583 Před 2 lety +5

      @@djsomeguy That's still not a good enough of a reason for the average user to fork out $500. Especially if it's not a tool used everyday and they treat it as a last resort to get something loosened or unstuck. But again, it's just my opinion. Personally for me, even if it's a little clunkier than the Snap-On the Chief is a better choice. Especially if you were to include the down time from the tool suddenly failing during use. Because I can take a 30 minute drive to the store and get it replaced instantly. Where-as the Snap-On tool truck could take hours to show as they deal with multiple businesses in the area. That and if I had $500 for just air hammers I'd probably skip the headache and buy two or three at a time and replace a broken one when it wasn't a work day. :)

It hits pretty hard and seems to be built in the same housing as some of the tool truck brands, but the one problem I've had is that you can't really ease into the trigger so it ends up bouncing around if you're trying to be more precise. You should add "Made in the USA" to the "notes" on the Snap-On. For some of us, that's still a factor when we consider what to buy. I have no problem paying the extra $40 for the Snappy over the Matco to get USA made.

    I have the Snap on, the matco, and new and old CP .498s. I had the Snap on first and it is still my preferred tool because of its Does Everything ability. Fits under bedsides better for spring/shackle/frame work, and as shown here, it has the easy touch to do sheetmetal/spotweld work.

    I just started as a mechanic this year and I had the chance to use my co workers Snap-On air hammer, and I was hooked. I decided to just cough up the dough and buy since since the power, feel and control, you get is next to none. It will surely last me at least a decade and if not, I got the that snap-on warranty. Oh and it's a blast to use, makes me want to use the tool and makes my life 100x easier.

    Thank you for bringing some sort of order to comparing air hammers! Looks like a did good the last time I bought one, which was about 2 years ago, but ended up getting an IR 119. It has been good, and happy I saved money over a tool truck one.

    Would you guys be able to somehow test out/ quantify the power potential difference in air hose coupler styles???
    I was always 'M STYLE' but after starting work in a shop that is all 'P STYLE' I was blown away by the "added beans" and quickly switched to those in my home shop! (yes on 1/4" nptf air tools (but using a 3/8 hose))
    as always, love the content ! thanks

      Connector style is probably a lot less significant than running a different line pressure. Your new shop probably runs the compressor higher.

    Love the channel guys and all you do. My only issue is I think the price category should be calculated a different way. That is almost as important a stat as power output yet the points garnered from a win is miniscule compared to power output. In my oppion the IR 119max is heads and tails above everything else. Thanks to your channel i am actually pulling the trigger on one today to help with a stuck leaf spring bolt in my Tacoma that i have been wrestling with for a couple days now. Merry Christmas TTC!

    • @TorqueTestChannel
      @TorqueTestChannel  Před 2 lety +1

      In this category in particular it is less weighted for price ur right. Without any power figures we originally just wanted to rank these by power alone as no one knows this. Then just list price as fyi. We did end up incorporating its score, but you can rank them as you see fit knowing each detail.

  • @shadowdog500
    @shadowdog500 Před rokem

    The snap on has four power settings which is adjusted using the red band just above the air inlet. Which power setting did you test it in? If you want more fitness, a lower power setting and the adjustable trigger gives you plenty! Mine kicks like a mule on high and I bought it used for $150 out of the bargain bin at the back of the Snap on truck. Always check the bargain bin. My first real roll away was a trade in from earlier that day that was still in the back of the snap on truck.

    I am a fan of snap on products particularly their hand tools... but I think you can get more use for dollar out of other options when it comes to power/air tools.
    With the exception being the air hammer... And this confirms my belief. That control may or may not matter depending on use case but it does put the cherry on top.

    if you can get your hands on some high speed sensors and load cells (Able to detect transients and whatnot) it might be fun to look at force per blow, but that requires REALLY high speed load cells with graphs.
