$60 vs $4,000 Torque Multiplier, Hand Turn 5,000ft-lbs?!

Are the hand operated torque multipliers we see from time to time ACTUALLY multiplying torque like they say. Sure you might have to spin it 64 times in one end to get 1 turn out, but does that mean it's really multiplying things 64 times? What about tools with an advertised torque ratio, is it useful to use a torque wrench in to get a certain value out using that figure? Are the cracy prices at the top justified? Today we aim to find out by testing an Amazon option like NEIKO PRO 03715B vs the likes of USA Snap-On, Wright Tools and more.

Nobody needs these teeth busters. Thet suck for just about everthing. 25 years heavy equipment mechanic experience. I can count on 1 hand how many times Ive tryed to use a multiplayer and failed. They suck . Impact wrench and heat will damn near remove any bolt - nut whatever. These things are just dangerous.

Is it possible to figure out a correction factor for anti-seize compound on threads? For example, maybe in the 0-50 ft-lb range a particular anti-seize compound might have a correction factor of -25% and that gets you in the 5% accuracy range on bolts. Then, if you up it to the 50-100 ft-lb range, it might have a correction factor of -50% instead. Seems like that should be something that can be characterized for a particular anti-seize formula. Would it be within the 0-2% accuracy range? Almost certainly not, but maybe it could be within 5-10%, and I would take that over my bolts rust welding in the midwest. Thanks for making this vid, quality content!

I bought the SAE icon set about six months ago. Really helped with a stubborn over torqued hydraulic fitting. When it bit it did not want to let go, I had to pry it out of the wrench after. Unfortunately for the customer that over torque had caused a crack in the manifold block. I’m not sure if some fool impacted it on.

The trouble is, if you're going from an oldschool maglight to any of these LED lights, you're going to get something way, way brighter than you're used to, so, you might actually believe that you're getting a million lumens... What I usually do is just buy whatever is cheap and takes 18650's as I have a grip of those batteries kicking around. Plenty bright for most things, and, well, you can have a couple of them on hand so durability isn't as much of an issue. If I ever wanted something properly big and bright, to be honest, I'd just build it myself. At least that way I'd know what I have, and wouldn't have to deal with the stupid strobe/sos nonsense.

FYI, ft-lbs is not a unit of torque, it's energy: pushing with a force of 1 lb, for a distance of 1 ft. Lb-ft is the proper term for torque, as in 1 lb-force at 1 ft radius.

All of the anti-seize products I've worked with contain (or are, moly for stainless on stainless, say) a lubricant and we always treated them as such, same as if there was a light coating of oil on the threads. The equipment I work on, we have a standard torque table by bolt size and grade, both dry (typically with a thread locking compound) and lubricated. Not sure how much it matters on smaller fasteners but all our lubricated torque values were calculated with lubrication between the bolt head and the surface it will be tightened against as well as on the threads, since this can be a significant amount of the total friction. It's just super critical to know what the spec is. We also pretty thoroughly clean and dry re-used fasteners and threaded holes in parts, and de-grease. Anything that increases friction on the head/threads will of course reduce joint clamping force at the same torque reading. Often work on hydraulic lines and fasteners in tight spaces that still need precise torque control, thought the 90-degree-and-any-length trick was more well known. I did work with one extremely stubborn guy who made me actually diagram it out and show the math though, so maybe not.

I bought a Braun at Harbor Freight when it was on sale, think it was a $30 light on sale for $19.99. At first when I tried to use it it only lasted like 5 minutes and kept shutting off. Even though I fully charged it before using it. I thought I wasted my money but when I used it a second time, the battery lasted the whole time I waw using it and did not shut itself off once. Not sure what happened the first time but so far I have been happy with it. I guess you get what you pay for but I was pretty shocked how the ICON didn't preform here. I do not wrench every day for a job, I am a home DYI'er but I do need and use head lamps at my job and I have not found a good one yet. Have you ever done head lamps?

I received the Braun in an under-$20 holiday gift exchange last year. Since then I've used it quite bit in all sorts of situations. I've been surprised at how bright it is for the size and what it costs and how well the magnet holds even on vertical surfaces. I don't throw my things on the floor, so I can't speak to that, but the hinge has seemed to hold up well. It is possible to adjust the hinge so that the light will stand vertically on a nonmagnetic surface with the light portion nearly horizontal. All in all, I've been very impressed and may buy a second one.

IDEA. You recently showed how no-seize can affect torque readings. I watch a lot of SMA and Eric is always faking torque wrench noises. He's learned to tighten by feel most of the time because he knows how far off torque can be for a variety of situations. I would love to see this tested. Mock up a bunch of scenarios of rusted, oily, wet bolts and nuts and show how different torque varies in these scenarios when trying to use a torque wrench. And, maybe have your staff tighten by feel to see how closely they can approximate the required torque. Better yet, go to SMA and do this with Eric. I would love to see that kind of collaboration.

On UH-1H Huey helicopters there is a main rotor retention nut. We called it the "Jesus Nut" because if it came off you were meeting Jesus. We had a torque wrench that weighed a good 35 lbs. and was 6 feet long. It took 4 guys on top of the helicopter and was dangerous. 2 guys on either side, one held the torque wrench down , 2 pulled and 1 pushed on torque wrench. You were stand on anti slip strips on the round body of the helicopter. Then the Army got us a torque multiplier. It was box looking thing the sat on top of the nut and you torqued it to something like 50 ft. lbs. and that torqued the nut. We were doubtful so we double checked it and it worked. One person job. Amazing. It was about 40 years ago. That was the first time I even heard of one, but I was 19 years old...
