How T1 Built the Exodia Roster

  • SKT T1 is undoubtedly the greatest organization in League of Legends's history - and we can largely thank Faker (Lee Sang-hyeok 이상혁) for being the rock that T1 needed all those years. However, beginning in 2018, Faker's dynasty began to crumble around him. Even with a supposed superteam in 2019 - it wasn't enough to restore SKT to its former glory. After another unsuccessful 2020 season, T1 was undoubtedly past their prime, but then... they were saved. Not by Faker, not by Kkoma, but by 4 Rookies Who Rebuilt T1's Dynasty stronger than ever before:
    T1 Zeus | Choi Woo-je (최우제)
    T1 Oner | Mun Hyeon-jun (문현준)
    T1 Gumayusi | Lee Min-hyeong (이민형)
    T1 Keria | Ryu Min-seok (류민석)

    To avoid any potential copyright issues you'll notice a small section of the video is blurred (1:53-2:04) please understand I'd rather be safe than sorry since T1 protects their IP diligently (as they should!!)
    PS @T1/Joe Marsh if there are any other copyright concerns with this passion project, I kindly ask you to reach out to me directly before taking any formal action. I've been a lifelong fan of SKT and I'd be happy to resolve any issues collaboratively. Thank you - LoLAthlete :)

      Great content!! I enjoyed it. And I would like to say to you about the copyright issues, I think it would be best if you email them about it. They're very strick about their videos getting used without a proper consent. (specifically: You used a stream video: faker ganks guma/ & guma documentary, and those other clips from their videos)
      Even making/printing pictures from them needs permission before you can use it. So it's not a shock that they strike contents like this without permission from them.
      I hope you reach out to them, because this is a great video~❤

    So much is overlooked but the best underlying factor to this success, I believe, is Tom. Imagine being a coach mid-split without any major prior experience so he started from basically scratch and worked persistently until the last day of Worlds 2023. He needs to be acknowledged more.

      @@noobtaskmaster9884 i think kKoma being the head coach is the best decision as he handles interviews very well, he also is a very good coach who led to T1’s 3 world champions. Also he lets Tom and Roach do the draft as you can see that he always stay in the room during the matches. Tom has been an important factor for worlds, but i don’t think him being a head coach is important, i mean the 3 coaches (kKoma, Tom and Roach, Sky in waiting to enlist to the military) are veeery good, so being a coach or a head coach doesn’t make that much of a difference imo

      @@noobtaskmaster9884 A comparison of their track record doesn’t really lead me to the same conclusion… Tom retained his actual role, so he’s still contributing what he was before. Maybe your main point is that he deserves a promotion? But if you watch T1 content (their post-game interviews and the behind-the-scenes content on T1 membership subscription), Tom doesn’t seem to want to be head coach due to all the other out-of-game things that need to be done by the HC. If Tom wanted to be HC and T1 was the one denying the position to him, he could have gone to other teams after their Worlds win, right? The dynamics between him and the T1 players is such that they cater to the players a lot more than Kkoma (the players are basically able to order them to do stuff). Kkoma is able to give more straightforward feedback, keep them in line, and keep them from tilting. The difference in their people skills and their management skills is quite obvious in the vids. When T1 was struggling, Joe Marsh said Faker met with management about bringing back systems from Kkoma’s era as he believed they were more effective.

    • @KaramelLife
      @KaramelLife Před 2 měsíci +39

      Wasn't Tom who decided to stay as draft coach? Head coach role cannot focus only on draft. From snippets I watched on T1 CZcams, tom more on comp draft bp & jungle, roach on champ matchup in lane, especially top. Kkoma has experience managing, coaching, guiding, PR-ing, world-winning team(s). You can see the adoration he has for the player & team in post-match interviews. T1 is as much kkoma's home as it is faker's.
      Also, I think kkoma asked for a coach skin in 2016 since he's coached skt to win worlds 3 times, but riot said he has to win more (5?) Riot compromised and made the SKT kkoma ward.

    I think most people who hate faker are new players. I refuse to and it is hard to believe that people who played since season 1-3 can hate him. He doesn't even brag and rarely even trashtalks even in videos where they talk trash to each other in LCK. I don't even know what they hate about him.
    He had his ups and downs and sure he is not as dominant as he was back in the T1 dynasty especially in the laning phase. Even I think that it is true. But, he definitely gapped or is at least ahead of the competition against any other mid laners he faced at worlds. Sure there is some criticism that he can only play Orianna, Azir and Sylas. But does it really matter? Everyone is picking the same thing anyway. Neeko is always banned, which he also plays.
    But what about now? Well he's doing pretty great at the spring split so far. Sure they lost again to Gen G, but aside from that he's doing pretty well in lane. He gapped Zeka's corki when they played against each other. Zeka is a very mechanical mid laner with his Akali, Yone, and Sylas, and corki is one of the most op picks at lck right now and he beat him without any possible arguments of faker's performance. He is also doing well with Neeko and his 5 man ults. Sure he is not that "guy" anymore, but he doesn't really need to be the star player of T1 anymore. I think what the roster need in the mid lane is not someone like Chovy who can hard carry or a star player of the team. The other Zeus, Oner, Guma, and Keria are all so good that when given a chance they will carry. IMO what the roster need in the mid lane is a veteran who can act shotcall and facilitate the team and make the others ahead.

    To be honest, half of 2022/2023 t1 roster's success was Zeus/Keria being by FAR the best in their respective roles. In both worlds, Zeus (other than finals of 2022) was deadass stomping the enemy toplaner.

    The weird things about Faker is at one point he's overrated him as the best mechanic in mid when he was not anymore
    But in 2023 when he actually dominate lane, people only talk about his shotcall instead like it's the new cool
    Experience aside, the whole map dominate playstyle works because Faker always has mid prio. No surprise it'll crumble when Poby loses lane and the mid that roam around the map freely is the enemy, not Faker

      @ValkyrionX2 Před 2 měsíci

      I think it maybe different in term of "dominating" during his early days and now.
      On his early days if you face against him it's like insta death sentence, like no matter what you do, he gonna solo kill you, like there is no chance against him
      Right now his dominating is more like, it's not instantly death sentence but one misplay/one wrong shotcall can cost you everything. In fact if only mechanicly speaking there are more people who can match him on mechanic right now compared when on his early days.

They focused on playing as per normal and not getting too excited or agitated. Keria also said that because they were the only Korean team coming into the semis, any added wins are bonuses and they would not need to feel the heat of any losses because they had already made it further than any other korean team. Furthermore, JDG was already on their golden road and it seemed inevitable for them to win everything. And had Ruler, who took down the T1 dynasty back in 2017.

      @@zackrasphodos.2305 at 2021 to 2022 a lot new T1 fans keep blaming faker and thought faker should be replaced even though when faker playing great, I remember when pobby replace Faker a lot new T1 fans excited because finally faker get replace but after how horrible they are without faker they started to blame pobby, when the problem was not only in pobby but all them. Even though when faker back there was still some new T1 fans that faker was not good enough.
      As for faker hate, you know there was a lot not minority, and a lot of them was new lol fans and fans another player that jealous that faker keep getting called goat, or the best player that ever touch league of legends in the world.
      Also about another team fans is there was the envious one, they envious about T1 achievement. Take example GenG fans, Will always be there in Every T1 match, to boasted GenG lck trophy and their achievement.

      @@azrrrrrrrrYup, no disrespect to ZOFGK. But I’ve been following T1 or morelike Faker’s Journey since 2013. And Impact Bengi Faker Piglet Poohmandu still have a special place for me personally. Marin and Wolf also step up a lot, but get little credits, which is unfortunate.
