The thing I most enjoy about Necromunda is having your very agile, very fast assassin champ get hit by a Hail Mary stubgun shot from a fresh-faced juve while on a staircase then fall down not only that set of stairs, but two more because they failed all of their initiative checks, ending up seriously injured at the bottom level where another juve just walks up to them and does a coup de grace.
It's the interactions like this, where the terrain isn't just a movement penalty or increase to armor/reduction to the chances of getting hit, but that where you are, where you place your guys matters. There's wind turbines eager to turn a poor ganger into so much chunky salsa, there's vats of goo filled with god knows what, grabby tentacles reaching out from grates in the floor etc. to watch out for. A well put together Necromunda table not only looks damn cool, but is an active part of the game.
The most annoying thing though is the prevalence of plasma weapons. It's annoyingly "meta" but just too good to pass up.

When the game first came out in the 90s we took it up and had loads of fun. I still have my Escher gang, Black Orchids. We had scenery we built, some of it to reflect occurrences in the game, such as a Goliath getting buried by rubble when the roof collapsed. A tank car made into some kind of chem tank. Whoever won the game could take it and paint some graffitti on it. Things like that. The game was a blast. Now, with the new miniatures and material, still grand. :) Great game!

The less free time I have as I get older the more I value my hobby time and especially narrative games because its just epic!
40k is slowly harassing me out of the hobby with the shenanigans of releasing a codex followed by a whole other book for 4 pages of rules that should be in the same frakking book🤣
Hey, have you thought of making a discord so we can keep growing the munda communit & this channel?

I get that. I played a 40k game last night with my updated deathwing. They have collected dust for years and all of a sudden they are relevant. But you need the codex. Regarding a discord, I figured there is so much out there already. I just started Instagram so between the channel, FB and that I’m not sure I could efficiently keep up with it.

Great introduction to the madness that is Necromunda! Bonus, I got a (much appreciated) shout-out! I view NM as something you can run as an almost rpg sort of game - the gangs and members have names and can definitely be fleshed out - if your group has a ref/hivemaster the characters can be involved in adventure hooks/plot points for games so epic that you will talk about them in years to come. Down such a path lies madness. Embrace it. Cheers!

Of all the GW games, I love Necromunda the best, and I have since the very first release in the '90s. In fact I think I've played more games of that than I have of 40k.
I have moved away from mainstream 40k but I prefer skirmish-sized games (he says as he opens his third Bolt Action army LOL) and I've been a Goliath player from Day One. If someone were to ask me to recommend one and only one GW game for them to play, Necromunda would be my recommendation without a second thought.
The new version is sometimes more complicated than the original, which was based upon 2nd Edition 40k - especially the wound rules can be confusing now. But I think they can be learned as you go,

Obvious question for many people who might be thinking about getting into Necromunda right now is whether Stargrave might be a better fit for them. It's sitting in the same small-skirmish scifi minis campaign game niche, it's the product of the same guy who designed the immensely successful Frostgrave and Rangers of Sjadowdeep fantasy games, and its dedicated minis are far more modular and less expensive than Necromunda's. Plus it's minis-agnostic so if you already own scifi figs (including Necromunda ones) you can almost certainly use them for Stargrave as well. And the rulebook is about 55% of the cost of Necromunda's, and its complete, where the total package for Necro sprawls over more than half a dozen books at the moment with more coming, and many of their new models are sickeningly expensive Forge World stuff.
Stargrave's due out in under three weeks. Going to be interesting to see how fast its player base grows, and how expensive this new Necro core box (and the Cawdor book) winds up being.

    • @MiniatureGameMontage
      @MiniatureGameMontage  Před 3 lety +1

There should be some Endorsement qualification in there somewhere. 😋
Seriously though there are a cubic metric F-ton of skirmish games out there. Each one has it's own special niche.
As an aside I have yet to play a session that didn't have some counts as models. Heck, once the bug bites hard mini conversions and terrain vie for hobby time. Checkout some of the Necromunda galleries out there. It's not a tournament type game being held by GW sponsors at Adepticon. Use whatever minis n terrain you want.
Most importantly "Do have some Fun today".

The tone & quality of this channel is really inspiring me to get back into Necromunda, everything is just right for what i like in my gaming hobbies. Im about the narrative, customisation and model making.
GW have always possessed the some best lore and IP from back in the 80s/90s, but have degraded that rich resource for profit, for so long, that i hesitate.
I dont know if current GW has improved its ways since i broke free all those years back?
I think id like it all better if they seperated rules from lore. Maintain free online living rules sets rather than have it all scattered between so many pay walls etc.
Im wondering if this new starter pack rulebook will be an up to date revision with all the changes, erratas etc to date. If so, would be a tempting option to start Necromunda if the price is right.

Wonderful vid thanks! I think in the future folks shouldn't even call them pros vs cons though, it's really all preference in Necromunda's case. Like for the non-concise rules that are spread out etc...I mean so were some of the greatest RPGs of all time, and I'd have it no other way so as to ensure all the lively and awesome experiences we can get thanks to that approach. Ash Wastes is the perfect example of how epically well they've been able to take advantage of the way the game is set up like that.

Finally got around to watching this video, and I've certainly found it informative. Love your Necromundan content btw.
Things I like about this game. I really like the alternating turn stuff. I've played 40K games where I get tabled in turn 1 or 2 and annihilated by the following turn. Or just play the rest of the game feebly trying to catch-up; and it is not fun. The alternating turn stuff feels really appealing to me, and reminds me a bit of Bolt Action with their system and order dice. (Need to check your Bolt Action content as well) And honestly, I do weep in sorrow we don't have the same level of balance that Bolt Action has with its game. I do think the alternating turn stuff would help balance 40K so much. But that's getting ahead & aside.
Don't think I'm going to get into Necromunda any time soon. Missed a chance to try & play a campaign at my local Warhammer store, and they are soon going back to 40K. I'll definitely be doing Aeronautica soon, they have plans to play that after this upcoming 40K campaign. Plus got a mountain of stuff I need to finish painting before I consider getting more models. Love the assembling and building.

One con you forgot to mention is Necessary Accessories, namely gang cards. Gang Cards are the primary handicap mechanism for matches between different power/experience level gangs.
While the starter sets come with a decent collection, it becomes clear you need the sets dedicated to your gang for the biggest bang for your buck as it were.

How would you describe your philosophy for building a Munda board? Is every piece separate? Do you have a method of where doors and corridors are? Or do you just kinda get the terrain out and start putting it on the table and let it grow naturally?
I’m working on my terrain and building it and painting it is almost less daunting than thinking “we’ll do I glue this floor to this terrain like on the box? Do I keep it separate for customization?”

    • @MiniatureGameMontage
      @MiniatureGameMontage  Před 2 lety +1

I think there are pros and cons to both. If you glue pieces it does lose some modularity. It also requires much more room to store. You can, however, add much more detail and depth with grime and rooms and stuff like that. All of my stuff is individual pieces. I store everything in a few boxes and just start putting things on the table.
Generally, I try to think of a theme. Is it more of a street fight, will it be more of a mechanicus/industrial area, HAB level, etc. I start placing columns and walls and build up and out. I try to make sure all areas are accessible by two points and place doors where I think they must be used.

Very expensive, only available from their website so no 3rd party stores for the most part, and ridiculous shipping unless you feel like spending a lot at once. Just looking at picking up a copy of the game but with no models. . Would 1 box of 10 fighters be enough for a corpse grinder gang? If the gang could eventually be 20 fighters I would want to paint them all at the same time to keep them looking more uniform so should I buy 2 boxes? . . I like to batch paint units . .

If you are playing a campaign you’ll need two. The fighters will quickly expand over 10 in this gang bc you need an initiate for every ganger. Enjoy!

Interested in this game. So far the biggest concern is the rules. Having them spread so far abroad means I’m unlikely to have all the relevant rules. So - how do I play with someone else? If they claim I can’t do something or that they get to do something extra, I’ll have no choice but to shrug and go “I guess…”. I love the setting and excuse to make lots of homemade terrain. But rules seem… important?

Unfortunately if you want to know everything it has become somewhat “codexy.” You can get by and have fun with the core rules and your “house of” book but there would be surprises, especially with tactics cards. Yaktribe is a great resource for looking at various information that you may not have access to.

Necromunda is best enjoyed more as a gang RPG than a competitive game. Care for your gang and its fate. And with care, and played with a like-minded people the games become very tactical as a mistake can cost you a ganger or more and unravel a good run of fortune very quickly. No system like it.

Certainly debatable. I've spent a lot of money on it and do not have any regrets. I think of it as I could have played 10 rounds of golf (which I do play) and that happiness would be long gone. I'm still enjoying Necromunda, however.

@@MiniatureGameMontage I spent a lot of money in GW when I was younger and enjoyed wargaming, until everyone I knew moved on to other things because GW's prices were just increasing at a ridiculous rate. I remember when GW said plastic miniatures were becoming such good quality that they'd be able to reduce the prices when they started producing more plastic miniatures...and when they moved on to more plastic miniatures they increased the prices instead.
But when I look at the cost of..say the boxed games which used to be about £30-40, now they are over £100!
Maybe it's that my life has changed now that I have a family and no disposable income, but it would take me a couple of years to save £100.
