    The music in Nier does have lyrics but they’re not translatable, as Keiichi Okabe thought it would be too distracting, hence why he and Emi Evans came up with the series Chaos Language. I love how ethereal the singing is, the closest style of singing to this I can think of is Enka.

    The best game of decade.
    The best OST of decade.
    Keep in mind, that almost all of the OST tracks for Automata exists in 4 completely different versions and are mixing on the air depending on interactive game context..
    Plus lots of arrangements from piano to symphonic live performances.

    At the storytelling part you mention a duality between technology and nature in choice of instruments. The game's story also puts a heavy emphasis on spirituality and consciousness, and it's discovery of, as concluded by you by simply hearing the song. Which I think the organ and 'tribal' chants reflect pretty well. Pulling similar strings to Ghost in the Shell, as mentioned in the comments a few times.

    the Nier franchise has a full(or just about) language they made up called "Chaos language"

    • @NobleLeader6
      @NobleLeader6 Před rokem +2

      To elaborate further, Emi Evans (the singer in most Nier pieces) and Keichi Okabe (lead composer) have devised a really interesting system for how they make Chaos Language. Okabe will create the instrumental portion and send a sample to Evans. Evans then finds a language that she thinks fits the style of instrumental music. She then takes the most common sounds of that language, and uses those to write what could be called the lyrics. The idea is that, since the Nier games take place in the future, languages would have changed and evolved by then.
      This gives each song a few pieces that are seemingly recognizable to speakers of said language, but are just off enough to not really mean anything. Alex Moukala (I think that's how you spell his name) did a reaction to A Beautiful Song, and he pointed out that some parts of the song sound like Italian.
      Chaos language is super fun to listen to, especially if you try to guess the language of origin for each piece.

    So happy to have your thoughts on this song, as i have a very special relation with it. Let me explain.
    I'm a huge NieR fan. I, a 32 years old fully grown, pretty huge man, nearly cried when Automata was announced. Because the first one touched me in a way almost no other game managed to.
    Fast forward, a few months later, the demo for Automata is released. I boot it up, get past the menu, and this piece of music starts playing. The hype was already growing up, i could feel it, something was coming. And then the violin part kicked in, and i had no choice but to put down the controller, i couldn't play anymore, because i was straight up crying. I broke down, plain and simple, as deep down, i knew this game was gonna be as special as its predecessor was.
    And as of today, hearing this song still make my eyes wet, because that one moment i heard it for the very first time will always have a place in my memories, and a very special one at that.
    Music really is a blessing. Thanks for your work, Atlas !

    That guitar play you did was a god send!!
    This soundtrack is one of my favs in these games. This however is not an area exclusive track. Rather it plays on scenarios where the machines (aliens, which make sense due to the title) are present, the player of course killing them in the process for exploring that area and getting to a story point. Hearing this in game is absolutely beautiful. This also plays on the presentation btw.
    You like organs? Boy you are in for a trip with these NieR OST. Also, the lyrics are gibberish. Known as Chaos Language by composer Keiichi Okabe and vocalist Emi Evans. It is done this way so that the music is not distracting. Anyway, great reaction!

    You can enjoy without playing the others, though, you won’t really understand the truth of what’s actually happening, and the ending is gonna seem like something that it actually isn’t. Confusing series as it’s square enix and yoko, but goddamn is it the best story ever written.. ever!!

    The stuff about this theme, as I understand it, is that the cute little robots, the machine lifeforms we fight, they are trying to emulate human behavior, but since they lack true emotions and souls, then they behave in a more primitive manner, which I think that's where the percussion lands in and the other compositional elements, could reflect the sad true the machine lifeform will always face and that is that they will never be human, no matter how much they try.

  • @ChrisMorray
    @ChrisMorray Před rokem

    NieR's lyrics exist, but in order to prevent them from distracting and making people go "wait what was that line?" or people trying to find story or lore in the songs, it's a form of phonetic sound rather than a real language. The lyrics have no meaning, and they're just sounds. In a way, it's the voice used as a pure instrument, unrestricted by meaning or language. You still feel that emotional response from hearing a voice, but you no longer have that confusion of what you're feeling and what the lyrics are singing. It's... Well... It's a rather unique approach to vocals in music. Not entirely unheard of, but for a videogame OST it has this strangely beautiful connection that you rarely get in any other way. If I could request one to really show this, look up the vocal version of City Ruins. The game has many dynamic layers in the songs and sometimes you don't get the vocals or certain instruments, so be sure to get the vocals.
