    If you want a master class on reframing a song, I highly recommend Emil's Shop theme in Automata. It's the same melody, but the tempo is sped up and instrumentation is swapped to a marching band type sound, with Emil himself adding clumsy made-up-on-the-spot type of lyrics advertising the shop he runs out of his moped. (Long story.)

  • @demian6761
    @demian6761 Před 2 lety +40

    In Automata, this theme is converted into a song that you hear when you are close to Emil's shop.

    This track also really stands out for being the only track with male vocals, and a boy at that (cementing its likely supposed to represent being sung by Emil himself).

    Also, Highly recommend the track preceding the boss encounter at the start of the video, "The Ultimate Weapon".

    • @JetEriksen
      @JetEriksen Před 2 lety +5

      It's not true that this is the only song with male vocals. Birth of a Wish from NieR Automata has male vocals too.
      If we're only talking about Replicant though, there's "The incomplete Stone" which is the theme of the lost shrine. And "Blu-bird" Which is the boss battle theme from the same area.
      "Cold Steel Coffin" the Aerie theme also uses male vocals (In the background, not as the main vocal)
      And there's a bunch of other examples. So while yes, NieR uses predominantly female vocals. There's still male vocals to be found all over.

It hits you very differently playing the game when you get the version with male soprano voice vs other versions. I'm a massive fan of Yoko Taro's weird brain and everything he touches. The beautiful part about the NieR series is that they understand that the accompanying music is just as important when telling a story as the story itself. Nearly every piece I have heard from the series seems to go out of its way to match the scene/beat/scenario that it's in. And that's not a small feat considering the mind of Yoko Taro. It really is just a brilliant expression of what video games can be when the developers actually care.

    Uncle Jesse has learned how truly amazing the composers at Square-Enix are between Final Fantasy and Nier... and probably some Drakkengard 3 later.
    Also... There is a version of this in the FFXIV raid (which is a Nier Cross-Over) Breach at Paradigm's Tower. It's more upbeat and won't carry the emotional power of this track unless you've played the original and hear it in FFXIV. Going through that raid, a lot of the Nier and Drakkengard fans cried at a lot of the tracks, especially due to emotional attachment to them. Those games, which are associated with YOKO TARO (all caps) are not afraid to touch subject matters other games wouldn't touch with a 100 ft. pole. So they carry a lot of weight for the fans of those series. I have only played Automata, but I have researched all the lore for Drakkengard 1 & 3 (2 isn't considered canon) as well as the original.

    What I love about most of these songs, both from Replicant and Automata, is that the chords and build-ups of the songs are reoccuring alot, but when listening to the songs thats something thats not apparant at all. The composers "theme" and style really goes through them like a red thread, but its done with just the right amount. I really think, as a pianist and composer, that alot of these songs are masterpieces just from a composition stand-point. From Neir: Automata, the first song that plays in the intro is Alien Manifestation. Its so incredibly well made, from the singing thats supposed to mimic the aliens with a more aggressive tone, switching over to a passage that links over to both Emil's Sacrifice and Grandma. These soundtracks in themselves should be proof that video-games is as much OR EVEN MORE fine-culture than movies or music as an own phenomena.

    Edit - about to trawl your channel now. If you haven't already I highly recommend another Nier song, from Nier Automata. Weight of the world (Japanese version). Its so beautiful.

    The instrument quality for the remastered version is so damn great but i prefer the choir vocal of the old version better , not that this isnt good mind you , just because old ver vocal sounds much lighter and gives off a feeling of unshackled freedom

    The soundtrack of the original Nier is much better because it is composed by Keiichi Okabe and Monaca, the true geniuses, in this remake it was a third-party arrangement that takes away a lot of feeling.

      igual esta muy buena la del remake, no se porque pero me causa la misma sensacion por igual que la original, la verdad Nier tiene un soundtrack expectacular, y salte de alegria que por lo menos el remake haya ganado el premio Goty a mejor banda sonora

      nah, the original, only had like 2 or maybe 3 that were better, All of the new ones are better or JUST as good, and the ones that are just as good may as well be better because of the extra bit they have that are great. PLUS the remake has NEW fantastic tracks

      nah mate, replicant was one of the two original versions of the game, but was not available outside of Japan until now with this remake. in Japan, replicant was playstation exclusive and gestalt was xbox exclusive. both games were released at the same time.

      @@JohnDCrafton yes I know about the two versions, the big difference was brother or father. I own the Japanese Gestalt soundtrack. They re-recorded the ost for the re-release of Replicant and changed things.
