Hearing Song of the Ancients for the very first time and checking out 3 different versions! I tried to choose my favorite from them and it was super difficult to do so! Hope you enjoy!
Composer - Tomita Lab

Nothing like the most beautiful song you've ever heard for the saddest boss fight in almost any video game.
The boss fight is extremely difficult... not from the combat or the boss being overpowered... but you can't see the screen through your tears...
One of those times when you realize that if you were on the other side of the fight you would also be a hero
The singer is Emi Evans
Yes, Emi (Emiko) Evans is the creator and voice of this Chaos Language for Nier game series.
13:20 spot on. But this version is forever known as the song they played at the Tokyo Olympic opening ceremony.
Went to look this up right away, that's really cool. I wish I knew about Nier back then.
The first one is my favorite version, very relaxing. Added it to my fantasy playlist.
It's so beautiful, I listen to it all the time when I chill out.
I'm a bit late, but the vocalist for these songs is Emi Evans, who also wrote the chaos language lyrics for basically every song in the Nier series. For this song (and only this song) the lyrics were written by taking elements from a bunch of languages and combining them. The other Nier songs are written by imagining a current language several thousand years in the future. Also, Song of The Ancients Fate, (the last version you listened to) was actually played during the parade of nations during the 2020 Olympics which is pretty cool
Oh remember them using game music at those olympics! I will have to go back and listen for this song.
My favourite is the first one, the popola one. The Library means so much to us Neir fans and that version represents the library.
The first is best, no contest. I had chills the whole time and shed a tear. Pure magic. Transports me to a time where I'm sitting around a fire in medieval times with friends while we listen to a beautiful young woman singing on a nearby stage
Sameeeee
There are actually 6 versions of SotA. Atonement is my favorite. Its works very well as a boss theme in the Nier crossover raid in XIV. Atonement is a fourth version based on the third one you listened to. It was originally a boss theme in the second game, Nier: Automata.
Also, Devola and Popola are characters in the first Nier game.
There are at least 7 or 9 versions, are there not? Devola, Popola, Fate (the 3rd one in the video), and arguably the one that plays in the tavern after a side quest counts but it is just Devola and Popola at the same time so maybe not. Additionally all of them were remade in version 1.224... so that is 3 or 4 more. Add Atonement and that makes 7 or 9 depending on how you count it.
Off the top of my head there is: Devola, Popola, Hollow Dreams, Fate, Devola (2021 version), Popola (2021 version), Hollow Dreams (2021 version), Fate (2021 version), Atonement, Lost Androids and the Drakengard 3 version. There are also a few other versions that don't appear in games such as the orchestral arrangement.
There also the weiss version
Also Echo version
This song has been remixed far too many times.
Would love a couple more
the experience of this music is just amazing when you know the context of the game
I have the Nier series on my list to play on the channel someday. :)
Without context is beautiful already
@@SuportoVc And with context, you won't be able to listen to any version of the song without tearing up.
wish i saw this vid earlier but yes, there are live performances by full ensembles w/ original vocalists such as emi evans, (though over the last year many of the english-titled tracks got taken down). great reaction and analysis. loved seeing your excitement and appreciation visibly grow as the musicality, unique textures, etc.
Thank you! I appreciate your support!
I love this song, from one of my most favorite ever games to play. If you ever play AutoMata you'll understand when you get to the final ending.
Without spoiling anything… Devola and Popola are prominent members of the main characters community. They’re twins. Popola spends most of her time in a library and hands out most of the main storyline quests. Devola spends her time in a tavern and lets you know about side-quest opportunities.
The music for NieR (especially, in my opinion, Automata) has no right being as good as it is. Other amazing NieR songs that you shouldn’t miss are: Grandma, Grandma (Destruction), Emil, A Vague Hope, Forest Kingdom, City Ruins, Amusement Park, Wretched Weaponry, and I would get burned alive if I didn’t mention A Beautiful Song. :P There are so many more great songs, but these are some of the stand-outs (to me, anyway!)
Thank you!
You forgot to mention Shadowlord :P
@@man100111 lol XD
@@man100111I'll second Shadowlord!
@@man100111forgot mourning, the tower, snow in summer, possessed by a disease, voice of no return
Always been a fan of the Devolah version. Simplest, cleanest instrumental, love the subtle percussion. And it's just so cozy hanging around the fountain.
fate version from nier 1.22 is easily my favorite. definitely listen to that one as well.
This was a fun reaction. I would absolutely love to see a full soundtrack reaction to this game.
I alsoooo think you would love the music of the sequel Nier:Automata.
The Song of the Ancients, in both Nier games are one of my absolute favorites.
The Fate version isn’t echo from Emi Evans. That’s Nami Nakagawa, the second vocalist and filled the role of Popola.
Yes, Nami Nakagowa is also a major singer who has a range of styles; Possessed By Disease is her most notable song from Automata
Its just emi evans nami nakagawa only sang it in the concert version
For the names, the emphasis is on the first syllable, so DEvola and POpola rather than deVOla and poPOla as you said, but otherwise correct!
Popola version is my favourite
8:25 that brings back memories of fighting both twins. (Not sure if you play video games too, but that's an amazing fight)
I actually have the Nier series on my list to play someday on the channel.
@@SolitarySaturn Sorry about the small spoiler there 😬
and still, there are 2 other versions available
Song of the ancients Fate (boss)
Song of the ancients synced (which is devola and popola together)
please react to more nier songs, the OST is incredible
Popola and Devola. po-po-la and dev-o-la. They're twins.
If you haven't absolutely check out the orchestra version.
Ohh I will add it to my list! Thanks.
