    I got my XPS 17 9700 with the minimal (512M) SSD, expecting to open it up and put in one of my 2.5" 2-terabyte disks as soon as it arrived. I was stunned when I opened it up and found the m2 slots, which I'd never even heard of before and had no idea what to make of. Your video cured my panic. I have two m2 2-terabyte drives en route from Amazon and am looking forward to putting one in the machine and cloining to the other (which is my preferred way to back up). Thank you a millionfold.

    @DanielRodriguez-fg5ll Před 4 lety +7

    minor advice, always arrange the screws in the same order/place you took them from. With time, the screw tend to take the shape/indentation of the hole it was on (specially the corner) and it is easier to put them back exactly where you took them from.

    Thanks for the great video and the detailed instructions. I just got my new Dell XPS 17 9700 today and just now completed the upgrades that you showed in the video. You are absolutely right about the challenge in getting the bottom cover off the first time. Not an easy undertaking when you are trying not to scratch up your brand new machine. Everything else went just as smoothly as shown except that I couldn't figure out if the battery was actually disconnected. After I unplugged the connector as show in the video I opened the cover just to make sure it was the right connector and the laptop started up just as it had before. I took a screenshot of that part of the video and zoomed in to make sure I had unplugged the same connector and I definitely looks like the same one although it looks like they've reoriented it 90 degrees. I looked at the instructions on the Dell website for removing the battery and, although their instructions were not crystal clear, it did appear that they referenced the same plug in their photos. In any case, the upgrade worked like a charm with no startup issues at all. Perhaps there was enough juice in the bios battery to allow the laptop to startup even though the main battery was not connected. Anyway, thanks again and keep up the good work!

    • @SundownMRanch
      @SundownMRanch Před 3 lety +1

      Its not that plug, Its the one next to it that has a black strip on it. You lift up to disconnect it. Its the same as the iphone. So actually this video needs a disclaimer on it that is the wrong plug.

    • @natemurray9918
      @natemurray9918 Před 3 lety

      @@SundownMRanch Thank you for adding that clarification. Since I posted my comment, I had a Dell contracted technician out to fix/replace the camera on my XPS 17. He showed me that the battery connector is, as you said, the black strip right next to the 2nd SSD drive. The technician said this was the first connector of its type that he had seen even though he works on Dell, HP, Sony and Samsung products regularly. He had to replace the entire top half of the laptop including the monitor just to repair the $5 camera. Oh well. Although I really like the laptop, the camera is pretty crummy even when I works like it is supposed to. In my case there was some kind of debris obscuring the camera making it unusable. While it is working better now, it is definitely the worst laptop camera I've ever had. Not sure why they cut such an inescapably obvious corner on this otherwise solidly engineered and built machine, but oh well. Something else to be aware of is that it took 6 weeks for Dell to make the repair in spite of the fact that I had signed up for Dell Premium Plus Care which is supposed to mean that you get a technician on site within 24 hours - unless they do not have the parts in stock which was the case in this case. Thank you again for commenting on the battery connector. Hopefully we can keep someone else from accidentally frying their laptop since the video has an edit right at the point where "TED" detaches the battery and it it not clear where the connector is.

Also, you went through the hard drive setup pretty quickly, or I’m pretty slow. Do you need to go in manually and format the drive after install? Is there anything else you need to do to rename or point projects to this drive in the settings? Also, where are those settings? Thanks for your help.

  • @manireik
    @manireik Před 4 lety

    You made it look so simple and relatable. And I was finding it all easy, too. But then went to remove the copper cover for the second SSD, first screw glides out; second screw... instantly strips, in way too tight from the factory. So I guess now I know where "screwed" really comes from. I very much doubt Dell would consider that a "repair" they need to make, even though they used lousy screws and put them in way too tight... so guess I'll just live with only one SSD.

    hello friend .. congratulations for your guides .. I can add some of my experiences for a deeper upgrade.
    the basic m2 disk has unnecessary bloatware and has lesser performance than the second installed. those who are better can remove the primary disk and use an additional more powerful one to put the system from scratch, will have more space and more performance.
    for the ram that machine only had 8gb total? I also took the chosen xps 17 with 16gb and gtx2060, I ordered a latest generation 1tb 1tb m2 x4 that will be limited to x3 by the chipset and two 16gb memory banks hyper x impact 2933 ..
    can you confirm that the xps basically only has 2 memory slots and not another soldered on moterboard?

    Hey, it would also be cool if you switched to "Ultra Performance" mode (or however it is called) in Dell's power manager app. By default, the Optimized mode i think lowers the tdp to 56w or 45W, the other profile raises the PL2 to 70w or something (for the 6 core cpu) if i'm not mistaken. Also, just make sure that you have the power plan set to best performance - the one from the battery icon on the right side of taskbar.

    Is the ram in this laptop single or dual rank? Thanks

    The Ram you put in is a little slower than what Dell offers. Can you rec 64gb of RAM option that's as fast as Dell's Ram?

    It's the same upgradability as the 15 right? I'm struggling to decide whether to get the 15 or 17. My use case is editing video, but I want the smallest package!

      17 is the same size as many 15s fwiw. Look at the dimensions online.

    do I have to replace both SSD slots if I want to upgrade? or will the SSD built-in the laptop work with anything?
    like let's say I got a 500gb XPS 17 and I want to add an extra 1TB, can I just buy a 1 TB SSD and then put it in the second slot? will it work or do I have to get matching SSDs?

      Thats exactly what I did. I left the included SSD in place with the operating system and put in a 1TB SSD. For RAM its recommended to match sizes but not so much for storage.

    I have a question if anyone can answer... can i upgrade to 64gb of ram? I currently have 32gb and not sure if it will be to much....

    I wonder if it worths to upgrade from 16gb 2933 to 64gb 2666 or not. In your benchmark, I think 8gb is not enough to accompany with your 4k export so it is slow, 16gb maybe enough for 2:50mins length exporting. I just dont know if it worths spending extra for 2933 64gb? Since the price difference of 2933 and 2666 is about $60-$80 for 64gb

    I think you unplugged a speaker on that side - I did the upgrade on mine and couldn't find the battery cable.
