I'm dying to see your first PC build ever. Let’s make it as soon as possible, and remember filming this process with no cuts.
Nice! There will probably be cuts because no one will want to watch a 3 hour video 🤣
The Everyday Dad Can we upgrade the CPU?
@@wongkyo5339 Nope. It's soldered
Saptarshi Mondal oh....
Tks😚
@@TheEverydayDad Linus tech tips proves this statement false
I got my XPS 17 9700 with the minimal (512M) SSD, expecting to open it up and put in one of my 2.5" 2-terabyte disks as soon as it arrived. I was stunned when I opened it up and found the m2 slots, which I'd never even heard of before and had no idea what to make of. Your video cured my panic. I have two m2 2-terabyte drives en route from Amazon and am looking forward to putting one in the machine and cloining to the other (which is my preferred way to back up). Thank you a millionfold.
minor advice, always arrange the screws in the same order/place you took them from. With time, the screw tend to take the shape/indentation of the hole it was on (specially the corner) and it is easier to put them back exactly where you took them from.
Love the videos EDD! As someone who's never done their own upgrade, I'd love it if you could show a close-up of the screen when you format the new drive to show just exactly how you do that part of the upgrade
LOL I was so excited for you...I upgrded my mac book pro 2 years ago and what a difference. I am now thinking of adding another drive...thanks for your help!
Thanks for the great video and the detailed instructions. I just got my new Dell XPS 17 9700 today and just now completed the upgrades that you showed in the video. You are absolutely right about the challenge in getting the bottom cover off the first time. Not an easy undertaking when you are trying not to scratch up your brand new machine. Everything else went just as smoothly as shown except that I couldn't figure out if the battery was actually disconnected. After I unplugged the connector as show in the video I opened the cover just to make sure it was the right connector and the laptop started up just as it had before. I took a screenshot of that part of the video and zoomed in to make sure I had unplugged the same connector and I definitely looks like the same one although it looks like they've reoriented it 90 degrees. I looked at the instructions on the Dell website for removing the battery and, although their instructions were not crystal clear, it did appear that they referenced the same plug in their photos. In any case, the upgrade worked like a charm with no startup issues at all. Perhaps there was enough juice in the bios battery to allow the laptop to startup even though the main battery was not connected. Anyway, thanks again and keep up the good work!
Its not that plug, Its the one next to it that has a black strip on it. You lift up to disconnect it. Its the same as the iphone. So actually this video needs a disclaimer on it that is the wrong plug.
@@SundownMRanch Thank you for adding that clarification. Since I posted my comment, I had a Dell contracted technician out to fix/replace the camera on my XPS 17. He showed me that the battery connector is, as you said, the black strip right next to the 2nd SSD drive. The technician said this was the first connector of its type that he had seen even though he works on Dell, HP, Sony and Samsung products regularly. He had to replace the entire top half of the laptop including the monitor just to repair the $5 camera. Oh well. Although I really like the laptop, the camera is pretty crummy even when I works like it is supposed to. In my case there was some kind of debris obscuring the camera making it unusable. While it is working better now, it is definitely the worst laptop camera I've ever had. Not sure why they cut such an inescapably obvious corner on this otherwise solidly engineered and built machine, but oh well. Something else to be aware of is that it took 6 weeks for Dell to make the repair in spite of the fact that I had signed up for Dell Premium Plus Care which is supposed to mean that you get a technician on site within 24 hours - unless they do not have the parts in stock which was the case in this case. Thank you again for commenting on the battery connector. Hopefully we can keep someone else from accidentally frying their laptop since the video has an edit right at the point where "TED" detaches the battery and it it not clear where the connector is.
I just subbed a couple of weeks ago, and I wanted to give you major props! Your vlogging style is easy & fun. Kudos!
Oh, and my XPS 17 arrives sometime today, and I’ll be upgrading the storage to 2tbs. So thanks for an early peek into this awesome beast!
thanks for the video. it was very helpful. I just purchased this unit today but wont have it until 8/18. it's going to be a long 3 weeks. But I have to say listening to your video was fun. Not to many videos out there are as laid back and hummeris.
Hey Everybody dad,
Do you use XPS 15 or the XPS 17 as your main windows machine❓
gary pls
Everybody’s dad? Like Ghengis Khan or Abraham?

amazing job, please keep doing more laptop upgrading videos! (also, when partitioning ssds after you install them, could you put the camera a little closer to the screen?)
Thanks! Im looking to purchase this laptop, but the upgrade was a little doubt i had! This is awesome!
Love your attitude and outlook. Very happy to have stumbled upon your channel. 😊
Thanks for this, planning to do the same when my XPS17 arrives!
It’s more fun watching your excitement with these unboxing and upgrades!
Thanks! I enjoy videos where I do stuff instead of talk about stuff.
The Everyday Dad great stuff
Your videos always look so clean and well edited! 😊 They're very informative as well. I'm a recent subscriber.
He probably went to college to learn how to be so pristine in his editing and studio setup!
Please never stop making dell xps videos!!!
Hello!
All your videos are awesome!!! I really love !
I have 2 questions. What is the maximum supported ram frequency and the number of PIN?
You are awesome Everyday Dad! A quick question, where did you get your cool laptop tooling set (with blue colors!) ? I so love it and wish to get one too!
Great video. Two questions: I’m going to purchase the hard drive from your link, but you mentioned there might be a newer version. Is the drive in your link still the one you would recommend? Also, you went through the hard drive setup pretty quickly, or I’m pretty slow. Do you need to go in manually and format the drive after install? Is there anything else you need to do to rename or point projects to this drive in the settings? Also, where are those settings? Thanks for your help.
Was this run with Dell's thermal profile set to the default "optimized," or "full performance?"
GREAT VIDEO EDD - it was fun to watch!
4:48 that is the speaker you unplugged. The battery is the large red-orange pull tab adjacent to the SSD#2. On the opposite side is a similar speaker power for the other speaker.
Thanks for much for putting this video up. What type of screwdriver needed?
I love upgrading the RAM on computers. I have been doing it since 1985 when I started on my Packard Bell desktop. Yep, I just dated myself.
Just for the activity of doing it or because of the results of performance after it? I've never done it and I would like to know if it's worth it.
I watch your videos on an 80" tv and about the dent; it didn't arrive that way so I would like to know how soft is that aluminum?
It is a good idea to replace the thermal paste too. Aftermarket thermal paste is always better than the thermal paste that comes from the factory.
Thanks for your episodes on the new Dell 17. Very helpful. After watching, I’m sorry I only ordered mine with 16 GB. If I want to add another 16 GB, what type should I buy? Not sure what single vs dual means. I noticed you said the ones you bought were a little slower than the ones that came with your computer. Any help you could provide would be awesome. Thanks again.
Nice video. By the way, have you tried inserting an external gpu for your new dell xps?
It seems the added SSD shows up automatically in the video. Mine is not showing after the installation. Is there something I need to do to see the 2nd SSD? I only see the original SSD with operating system. Thanks for any help.
Hey ! How did. you pry it Open ? I removed the screws, however i am a little scared, as the back lid doesn’t come off easily
You made it look so simple and relatable. And I was finding it all easy, too. But then went to remove the copper cover for the second SSD, first screw glides out; second screw... instantly strips, in way too tight from the factory. So I guess now I know where "screwed" really comes from. I very much doubt Dell would consider that a "repair" they need to make, even though they used lousy screws and put them in way too tight... so guess I'll just live with only one SSD.
It would be great if u can make this a mini series. Like move the OS to the new/faster drive and see if it improves overall performance. Also what else can u upgrade? Does this void any warranty or protection plan?
Could you talk to your statement of new ssd tech you mentioned while installing the upgrade?
Hey @The Everyday Dad.... First, great channel. I actually work on Premiere Pro. Second, did you have any difficulty removing the screws? Mine seem overly tightened, thinking even cross-threaded. I am going to have to use my Dell Service contract already *sigh*
Hello; I'm looking add adding storage to my XPS 15 9500. Where did you purchase the thermal pad and screw? Were you able to find a cover for the SSD or did you just leave it with the thermal pad on top?
Hi, would you be kind to reply if the 17 1080p res displays sharp text or is it blurry?
Great videos! Thanks
I wanna buy the base model but I need a good graphics card is there a way to change it?
Hi , is power adapter works with any of 4 Thunderbolt 3 ports ? I knowtist you've got power on right hand side.
Can this upgradation be done on the base model of XPS 17 2020..?? Or id have to buy the higher model to have this ability?
Hi Thanks for the informative video !
Have you experienced thermal throttling ever since you installed Samsung EVO 970 Plus ?
Obviously EVO 970 Plus generates more heat than the original storage so I'm curious if cooling environment of XPS17 can handle this.
Thx !
Hello, just a question... since Dell specifics indicate 64gb ram 2933Mhz, but Crucial doesn't sell that speed, did you buy the 2666 or the 3200? Thank you very much.
Going to buy this laptop after your awsome reviews.....keep going on
How much faster is the rendering time on the 17" with the 1650ti vs the 15" 9400
I would love to see a build guide from you man! Just something basic - like a "building a mid-tier computer for a layman" type of series haha
Are the screws and holes for screws holding rear of case solid ( meaning not easy to strip )?
I just got the new XPS 15, are the edges of the carbon fiber top on your rough? My Dell XPS 13 was rounded over and smooth. Doesn't feel great on the wrists and I'm wondering if I should ask for a replacement.
I want to ask. What battery do I need for xps 17 9700 if i want to change it after using for long time.
Please for the love of god make a deep review on that laptop, please..
So you want him to make a video on that laptop with me?? 😂😂😁
Just bought mine, I'll let you know 😃
hey one question do you think you could upgrade the cpu like i5 to i9 or seven or does it fry it.
Is this process going to be similar with the 15? BTW I ended up getting the Dell XPS in large part because of your videos and it's a great machine. Thanks for helping make the decision!
If you copy say 100GB or 200GB File from 1 M2 NVMe to the 2nd internal M2 NVMe, what speeds is windows saying?
Are you getting 2000 mb/s or higher ( preferably 2500 to 2700 mb/s )
Are you sure a RAID 0/1 setup is possible? And if so, does the same thing apply to the 15"?
Got my SSD drive. Ready to upgrade. Got all the screws out. And this back does not want to release. Have the iFixit kit and can't find any spot to get the tool under the back lid. Is there a trick to it? Used a suction cup on the back and it still won't release. UPDATE - Tried it again today. Tried slipping the iFixit “guitar pick” under the edge of the cover. There are just no gaps. I give up. Not a “fun experience”.
Just the video I needed. Thanks man ♥️
Oh! One more question. Is there a good place to sell the memory that came with the laptop?
Hi sir, can you please tell me the ram model ? I checked my laptop using crucial scan and I got 2 32gb modules from amazon. ddr4 -3200 1.2v cl22 is one of the recommended ones. after it got delivered today i feel this is a little smaller than yours shown in this video :-/ confused now.
Will the 64 GB DDR4 ram you used for your upgrade be compatible for all Dell XPS 17 9700s? Thanks.
I have the Dell XPS 15 7590 and was thinking of changing the 16GB ram to Ballastic 32GB ram. Would it be worth it for 4K short film making/photo editing
What's more worth it buying base mode XPS 17 or the I7 and 1650 card XPS 15?
huh is there a dent on the vent grill on the bottom panel? Or is that just some optical illusion.
Can this machines out of box SSD 1 TB drive be upgraded? To 4TB or 8 like the MAC 16?
Hi does anyone know the maximum ssd capacity that is supported by the new XPS 15 and 17?
Yes I would like to see you build your first PC.
Is there a chance to change the wifi card? Because I am thinking about hackintosh it. Some thoughts?
Guys in middle of this dell xps 17 mother board is hole black rubber, and on casing pin what is that ?
can we add a 2TB SSD in the slot making it total 3TB memory? or only 1TB ssd allowed?
You were so excited!
Can you demonstrate how to upgrade the graphics card to a better gaming one? Thanks, love the reviews
Could you do a Thermal test on it? Video editing and especially when gaming. :)
Hi, I noticed there was throttling in the xps 15 with the GTX1650 Ti...I wanted to know if that is not the case with the xps 17... especially due to the vapour chamber cooling... I am planning on buying this model if there is no such issue... :)
hello friend .. congratulations for your guides .. I can add some of my experiences for a deeper upgrade.
the basic m2 disk has unnecessary bloatware and has lesser performance than the second installed. those who are better can remove the primary disk and use an additional more powerful one to put the system from scratch, will have more space and more performance.
for the ram that machine only had 8gb total? I also took the chosen xps 17 with 16gb and gtx2060, I ordered a latest generation 1tb 1tb m2 x4 that will be limited to x3 by the chipset and two 16gb memory banks hyper x impact 2933 ..
can you confirm that the xps basically only has 2 memory slots and not another soldered on moterboard?
another very good upgrade ē replace the heat sink paste.
Can you please do gaming benchmarks for the 17 inch? I want to get the same exact model as you and do the same upgrades. Thanks!
The memory in my xps 17 is dual SODIMM DDR4 @2933 Mhz. Wondered which crucial ram you bought for your machine, I see this Crucial 64GB Kit (2 x 32GB) DDR4-3200 SODIM on the Crucil site and wonder if the 3200 Mhz is ok to run. Please excuse my lack of understanding. Thanks
Is it cheaper to upgrade to 32 or 64 ram yourself than buying the from Dell? I never upgraded something before
I've never upgraded memory in a laptop before. I will need to see if my HP has space for more.
Which XPS will you keep ?? the 15 or the 17 inches???? as your main machine .
Would the 8 core version be even faster? Not sure what cores really do.
Can you merge the new disk 0 with disk 1 and make one big SSD??? Or does it not matter
It is possible to change GPU from 1650 for 2060 or processor from I7 to I9 ?
Hey, it would also be cool if you switched to "Ultra Performance" mode (or however it is called) in Dell's power manager app. By default, the Optimized mode i think lowers the tdp to 56w or 45W, the other profile raises the PL2 to 70w or something (for the 6 core cpu) if i'm not mistaken. Also, just make sure that you have the power plan set to best performance - the one from the battery icon on the right side of taskbar.
The ram kit link you gave also has 3200mt option, but the real question is does xps 17 supports it?
After unpluging the battery where you said my laptop still powers on
I don't want to work on it without removing power. Please help[
Hey! I don’t know if you already figured this out, but he unplugged the speaker. Not the battery
Have you got any experience with Unity3D and what spec influences export speed the most?
Redoing the test for Unity would be amazing :D
(And help me and a friend allot to find the right Laptop XD)
use the spare SODIMM RAMs to explore mini PC NUCs?
Can’t wait to do that when Dell Japan decide to release the GTX 2060 version ;) yay
Yea I just got mine about a month ago it has the rtx 2060, i9, and 16gb or ram so I probably wont have to upgrade it for a while but when I do this will be very helpful.
How do you use the track pad? Is it more like a mac?
You should do a repaste and repaa with ( liquid metal or thermal grizzly kryonaut ) & Fujipoly thermalpads then let us see the temps with cpu only load and with cpu+gpu load
Is the ram in this laptop single or dual rank? Thanks
The Ram you put in is a little slower than what Dell offers. Can you rec 64gb of RAM option that's as fast as Dell's Ram?
WHAT TOOL KIT IS THAT I CANT OPEN MY XPS WITH THE SET I HAVE
It's the same upgradability as the 15 right? I'm struggling to decide whether to get the 15 or 17. My use case is editing video, but I want the smallest package!
17 is the same size as many 15s fwiw. Look at the dimensions online.
do I have to replace both SSD slots if I want to upgrade? or will the SSD built-in the laptop work with anything?
like let's say I got a 500gb XPS 17 and I want to add an extra 1TB, can I just buy a 1 TB SSD and then put it in the second slot? will it work or do I have to get matching SSDs?
Thats exactly what I did. I left the included SSD in place with the operating system and put in a 1TB SSD. For RAM its recommended to match sizes but not so much for storage.
I have a question if anyone can answer... can i upgrade to 64gb of ram? I currently have 32gb and not sure if it will be to much....
I wonder if it worths to upgrade from 16gb 2933 to 64gb 2666 or not. In your benchmark, I think 8gb is not enough to accompany with your 4k export so it is slow, 16gb maybe enough for 2:50mins length exporting. I just dont know if it worths spending extra for 2933 64gb? Since the price difference of 2933 and 2666 is about $60-$80 for 64gb
What would you do if the screws are stripped?
I think you unplugged a speaker on that side - I did the upgrade on mine and couldn't find the battery cable.
how come my dell 17 does not have space for a second SSD?
What size bit for the SSD? I'm afraid I'll strip it.
Why didn't you fix the dent when you had the back off?
What mat is that in all of your thumbnails
