Also play Omori, I hear it's fantastic, that'll make sense when you watch the video.
And for those of you that do read these before or during a video, Hiya, how was your day?
If you're feeling down, just remember there's always a rainbow after a storm, life will get better even if it doesn't feel like it, just take baby steps each day and things will improve before you know it~
Also also, in case you'd like some Mobile game recommends.
Granblue Fantasy, Blue Archive, and CounterSide are big ones for me right now.
Revue Starlight, Azur Lane, and Girls Frontline are also good.
And for games coming soon, Nikke: Goddess of Victory, and Girls Frontline Neural Cloud are on my radar personally.
Also also also, play Nexomon, that's a really good Pokemon clone.
It's not dark and creepypasta like, but it's fun!

I thought Evertale was a hallucination that would replace my ads sometimes. Glad to know that Evertale isn't a byproduct of my PTSD that haunts my mid-roll ads, and is indeed real.
Honestly, the whole thing about the guy making an actual story out of the animations of those scummy ads. Was a surprisingly positive note to end on!
It would have been so interesting if that's the game
@@dizzyheads Hell, I myself I am not particularly into these kind of horror games whose premise is "A nice-looking world is hiding something sinister". But I still hope the guy making that project of managing to construct an actual story out of the ads eventually gets finished.
And, I know this is gonna sound stupid. But I hope its ending isnt too depressing. I know, expecting a horror story to have a happy ending is a very naive thing to say. But to be honest, If I am gonna see characters experience a psychological and physical hell. I at least want to see SOME sort of light at the end of the tunnel!

this is one of those strange time when the fake-out ad is more interesting then the actual game, i guessing in the marketing team, one guy went "fuck it, shock content, pokemon edition" and just made up a completely different game to get peoples attention, and higher ups saw how even though it's a fake out, it still drew in customers so they let it continue.
" Strange time "? It's literally EVERY time with these mobile game ads.
I got another add for this game right below this video and the picture had a Eeveelution that looked like it was from Elden Ring or League of Legends
fr man i feel like the ads should be the plot of a really good maybe 4-5 hours long rpgmaker horror game
They're *always* more interesting, that's why they use them. Do you seriously think they'd release an ad campaign that looks worse than the game itself??
It looked so cool and I was so disappointed
Evertale ads look like if an AI took every popular indie game from the past nine years and created an amalgamtion trailer for all of them at once.
And it worked
Man this sucks because it’s such a good idea for a mobile game. A horror take on Pokémon and it’s gameplay style is something I’d totally pay to play. If someone could make something like this and not as a scam, I’d totally support them in any way.
Edit: just saw that end and now I’m totally gonna keep up with that project. Now let’s hope that it turn out better than those ads and that there is quality translations.
I had no idea evertale devolved into this. You're right. I used to play it when it was free, but fell out when it started feeling like generic waifubait. This is pretty disgusting. Obviously the ads are a reflection of the company itself. You just want to play a nice game, but it turns out the developers are monsters.
the company is just "I like Mone"
But monsters don't exist... just people. Greedy people.
Id play game if was like horror ads haha
Waifubait is such a great way to describe games like this
To be fair though, higher ups and marketing team also screw over developer lot of times. Though I don't have much faith in gacha mobile games not being cynical cash grabs anyway
5:44 the gimmick of using a text box to hide a scare in this way is actually used a surprising amount in older japanese rpg maker games such as Ao Oni which not only does a thing where it hides the titular monster in such a way but also features one I am incredibly fond of where you're tricked into opening the menu and you see something...that's not quite right in your party. And when you exit the menu...well.
I'm very interested in that second one, do you remember which game was that?

I was one of the older players who left shortly before the creepy ads started. The game had something like a "first chapter" that played completely differently from all the later ones. The first one has that monster-catching aspect, has typical JRPG elements, and then all the later ones are much more stripped down in terms of areas to explore, and it's just a series of encounters plus loads of story from time to time. Of course, it also ramps up the difficulty tremendously so it really requires investing some money to get strong enough to progress beyond a certain point.
For quite a while, I really did like the game, and I didn't mind spending lots of money on it to access more content, etc. I also enjoyed the waifu stuff, too. Lots of eye-candy. There were also some special gameplay aspects that were only available to top level alliances, and I even ended up briefly leading one of those high-level alliances for a little while. However, shortly thereafter, I quit the game for a couple of reasons.
1. The pressure. At top-level play, trying to handle campaigns of alliances of alliances against other alliances, there was a whole mess of politics between alliances and pressure to make sure that our teams were doing everything that they could to gain ground. I ended up putting pressure on members of my team, and I realized that I didn't really like that. I didn't like being the one who had to make the executive decisions all the time, or telling other players to get in line. I was spending way too much of my day constantly checking the game, having multiple daily alarms telling me to check various things to get all the points/resources I could. I stepped down and abandoned my alliance.
2. Pedo-bait. I really did like most of the story, and I also liked the sexy characters, but then they did a short story event where one of the young women gets magically turned into a child temporarily, and while the story itself avoided being too creepy about it, the "cards" for that new, childlike version of that character were *_deeply_* disturbing to me. The higher the level of the card, the more revealing the outfits, and it just made me sick. I considered just avoiding that particular event and waiting until something else came around to focus my time on the game again, but just the fact that those cards were out there, part of the game, and part of the promotions at the time really made me uncomfortable being associated with the game. I didn't want to be seen playing it anymore. I think a lot of other folks may have left for the same reason.
After hundreds of dollars sunk, I uninstalled the game and never came back. It was not long at all after that that I started seeing the creepy ads. I wonder if the fallout from their questionable choices contributed to the shrinking player base and the decision to work a weird ad campaign scam like this, to pick up a different player base than they had previously tried to court.
Sauce?

Sorry, I don't have one. Regarding the pedo-bait part, I remember leaving a comment on their Twitter post advertising that release, but I have since deleted my Twitter account, so you can't find it that way. I don't remember quite how long ago it was, but I would guess maybe a year or two.
If you find any part of my story suspicious, feel free to disregard it. I don't expect anyone to trust some random comment on the internet, but maybe someone else who was there at the time can vouch for me.

This should be higher - the game is (or was) not actually all that bad! a number of things speculated in this video are unfortunately misinterpreted, such as the game's price tag - even before the "ARG", it used to go free for a short period of time every now and then.
I got the game during one of those free periods before all the creepy ads started, and had the same experience - the way I see it, the first chapter was basically what the game was meant to be; it played out properly with an actual world to walk around in with monster-catching elements. I thought the story and boss battles were actually pretty interesting with some strategy involved, and I would've paid the price of the game for that bit of story alone - it kept me fairly entertained for a week overall, with the story and character arcs mostly wrapping up at the end of the chapter.
However, the chapters after that were much shorter and removed many of the features, including the monster collecting and even open-world exploration; instead you'd just tap on waypoints to trigger (much more boring) dialogue or battles. The difficulty scaling also made all the non-gacha characters essentially obsolete; it felt like the original developers of the game had left and someone else decided to turn it into a gacha game.
This was back in around Spring 2021, and I stopped playing soon after that first chapter - from what I've seen, the game has since gone through a major update and has only become more pay-to-win; I had honestly a pretty good experience with it myself while it lasted, but I certainly won't be coming back to it again.
These ads are extremely memorable. It's been like over a year since I've had one and yet I knew exactly what this video was about when I saw it. The weird amalgamation of stolen art styles makes in quite intriguing
Fr I had one ad that looked hella normally and just before I was about to skip it, it turned creepy and that really shocked me, even checked the ad video comments to see the general reaction and found out it's fake....
Minor correction. It was free when the ads started. It's been coming and going several times. I reckon I actually played Evertale during the third wave of these creepypasta ads. At that time, it was free.
My guess is that the team realized the bait and switch strategy wasn't working, so they resorted to grabbing your money before you get rug pulled.
They recently did another "sale" where you can download it for free. I decided to actually try it this time. So it's clear the "hey download this game now while it doesn't cost your money" was always there even before the ad campaign
@@ijustwanticecream7216 Does google play list free sale games as a discount or only free?
@@kyotanaka920 both
Actually I don't think it's minor but actually pretty major because it undermines the premeditated greedy move.
I think they went the somewhat cheap route of having a mediator for a third party do the ad and because it was "take it or leave it" they already paid for the ad when got it so game company got stuck with that ad, meanwhile they got hit with realization that ads were being both effective in bringing people in and simultaneously getting the game worse reviews due to misleading horror ads.
Once the Pandora's box was open it makes more sense to go with the flow than to fight against it. A price on the game bucks on those who get baited by curiosity, not caring about an entry fee, while also discouraging bad reviews that would more likely be made by those who try out the game for free.
@@ijustwanticecream7216 I confirm
if someone was to ever actually make this game Im 100% sure they would make bank if done right. this game would hit different and with the horror theme you could threw as many curveballs as you want with it.. Im sure if the person got more people to help the game would be crazy.
games that look basic, idyllic, and child friendly actually being creepy-pasta tier is a popular trend these days.
Buddy Simulator 1984.
Learn some grammar
People have already made .exe games and remakes of creepypastas for Pokemon.
Every single time no matter how low effort they are, they explode in popularity and then die out after a few months.
Keep in mind though, some of the better made ones stick around much longer. So the question is whether or not it'd be financially viable to do it.
And as long as you don't actually use anything from Pokemon, it is. Sprite work is cheap and easy to make, and it'd be so lightweight that you could easily build it in unity or RPG maker.

I remember being genuinely interested in these ads when I first saw them. Thankfully I did my research beforehand and saw that it was a scam, so I didn't spend any money on it.
I think it's kinda hilarious how companies can be so unaware of what people really want. If someone actually made a game like the one as advertised, I'd play for sure!
Support genuinely good indie devs, my friends!
Words cannot describe how deeply I appreciate the introduction to that One Punch ad.
I remember seeing the less waifu oriented horror ads. It was rather confusing, because I instantly knew there was no way a game that would actually be like that would be advertised so heavily. I felt they were playing their hand out a bit much. It would be cool to see a subversive horror game on mobile though. I imagine it'd be rather disconcerting to find a pokemon-esque game on the appstore, playing it for a bit, then starting to notice some darkness creeping in over time.
Never in a million years did I think a video about fake creepypasta ads for a waifu bait mobile game would end with a surprisingly wholesome message about the power of the human spirit, but here I am. Well done!

It's such a shame too, that such a great concept for a new direction of the game was squandered in favor of making quick bucks.

It’s sad how mobile app developers can be this disingenuous, and it still working on roping people in just because of how aggressive the AD campaigns are.

Most of the time, the ones in charge of PR are at fault, devs usually have little control over it
the game is actually dead, they just keep looping content
watch someone will actually make a horror "pokemon like" game and the company that made evertale can't sue because their actual game is nothing like what they show in their ads
Someone needs to make an actual horror RPG game based on this
Interesting video, the ad campaign seems a bit pointless though unless they are targetting young kids who will maybe buy something without looking into it. I'm guessing most people would click through the ad see the game is nothing like advertised and that would be that. Hopefully the fan game will give this all a happy ending afterall though.
Are there any great horror mobile games, I'd love to try some but it's hard to search through all the junk on the various app stores.

I feel so much pain because i LOVE games like these
I *KNEW* it wasn't always advertised as a horror game! I had vague memories of it not being treated that way, but since those old ads and stuff were basically purged from existence, I could have been crazy for all I knew. I'm glad to know I'm not. Lmao.
And ye, I remember seeing that one ad and thinking to myself "This is just White Space." That alone set me off (Not that I give much credit to mobile game ads to begin with, most are scams already).
Also, imagine if someone actually made the crazy meta game they were advertising. That dev would have my respect. Lol.
Edit: Never mind, apparently that *is* a thing? That's a great note to end on (And I see it's being done in RPG Maker, judging by the emote balloons. Nice). :)
yeah i've played ever tale before they even started this ad campaign and once they started i wondered why they did this? the story in the game is really interesting and i don't understand why they didn't just capitalize off that. would've made it 100% more truthful and better imo
What is the story about?
@@MrMagnetron2 it has a stereotypical beginning with the protagonists meeting up in a fantasy setting and showing the player the main power that is used for the protagonist to continue their journey, with their party (a mix of actual story characters and the creatures you catch a long the way and/or the characters you summoned). It plays like a stereotypical JRPG with semi-open world and turn based combat. I don't want to delve into spoilers but there are a couple of twists and turns in the story and the ending of the first part is a bit crazy. Unfortunately the second half doesn't entirely go into what is revieled in the first half but it does hit more into it. Honestly with better story direction for the second half of the game and a better ad camping, it would've been a great mobile game
Same thing happened too Love Nikki. Ads show the game as being really iffy with the episode style of game play. Actual game is great with a story about bravery and being yourself. It also gets into some really deep topics, for some reason china really likes drama. The story is also technically an isekai. At it's a core it's a dress up game but you can get stories from set descriptions and the sequel Shining Nikki has designer reflections which tell the story behind the outfit.

I originally thought those creepy ads were stolen wholesale from some other game or video but never bothered to look into it. I'm glad someone is making what's been advertised into a real thing.
Of course, I see in my recommendations of this video that Game Theory covered this as well and published 2 days before you did. Not watched MatPat yet but I hope he mentions the channel that's trying to turn those ads into reality
As someone who played the game before seeing a single one of these ads, I can say that the offline story is very interesting with lots of twists and awesome moments. The only thing I found to be similar between the game and the ads (except catching monsters or other obvious things) is the fact that the protagonists are being controlled/living in a simulation and they try to escape. Particularly, the main characters try to escape an endless cycle of fear and hope that repeats each century. Its pretty interesting in my opinion and right now the game is on discount (its free) so I suggest that you play it.
I just wish there was an ACTUAL slow burn meta horror game that plays off the tropes of gacha games.
Well, maybe I could make it myself but still
thanks for the idea, i just screenshotted it.

Evertale released at a dollar price point, they didn't change the price of the game because of the ads there was a campaign to gain new players by making the game free for a short time and was always going to go back to a dollar. While I agree the company leaned into the ads and is basically a scam at this point, the price point of the game I believe is a coincidence.
Yeah, I saw the game going from 9.99 (in my currency that's like 0.5 USD) to free multiple times over the years, before trying it last year
Months late but I'm glad i came across this video. Cause i remember playing Evertale BEFORE these ads were shown.
It wasn't until I saw these ads is when Evertale caught me in it's grasp again and played it again.
I'm so glad somebody out there went down the rabbit hole. It's one of those things I've always thought about doing but never had the energy to. My morbid curiosity has been sated. Thank you.
If they get you to watch 1 ad, they already made a profit from you even without the dollar fee. And they don't have to worry about burning bridges, the game made 4 million in one month last year alone. The amount mobile games in general and gatcha in particular is staggering.
I knew about the scummy ads, but I had no idea that the game was initially free and become 0.99 AFTER making the creepy ads. THAT, is messed up
It was $2 before it was free
Those ads always scared me when I was watching CZcams late at night

really nice commentary and editing and great criticism towards such a sleazy company
What’s even weirder about this is that Evertale in the apple store was $4.99 up until recently. It’s now free in the apple store
Yo great video! I found Evertale in their phase before all these horror ads and I genuinely liked the game. I only stopped playing because I got exhausted from the game loop. It was pretty much just go to new city/town, fulfill that town's request, fight boss, go to next town all while training. It started to feel a bit same-y, but damn I really enjoyed it actually. It's a shame it's been run into the ground by this scummy practice. That's exciting to hear about that project in Japan trying to piece together the ads though. I'd love to see that as well. Hopefully you'll update on that if significant progress gets made.
You know if they actually made the game they advertised, it might actually be a hit for me. I absolutely love physiological horror games, and I really wish they would produce the advertised content.

Only 7k subs..? This channel exists for 3+ years with pretty quality content atleast the ones I just watched...This makes no sense, I hope you grow big because you deserve it!
Watching that OPM ad... I'm starting to see why they sponsor youtubers to promote it for them. Also fun fact: the fake mobile ads are so infamous that an AFK Arena ad included a skit where a phone user gets an obviously fake ad only for the featured character to answer to the user's annoyance by actually teaching him how to play the game.
I remember seeing an ad for this game and was intrigued and decided to look into it. Needless to say, I was disappointed when I got to the app store and saw it wasn't anything like the ads.
You had my hopes up for a bit on the ARG part, I should have known better since I’ve been tracking this game for a while now.
I remember seeing the game on offer for free, downloaded it and didn't get very far cause i got bored. I've gained more entertainment through this video about the game, than the actual game and i think this is the only game i can think off that has managed to pull that off.
i feel the arg theory could still be there, like, its not all of them that bring to it with many just being there to do miss directions or just confuse the viewer. in exchange the real story is about them being trapped in a virtual reality to escape the problems they did to the world and all those unlinked adds actually being previous tries of the virtual reality program that failed or that they are seen as dreams by the people inside of it
edit: P.s i am not saying its not just made to bring people to the game
This was a great video. Your script was pretty good, keep up the good work! Looking forward to more videos like this aye.
Bro you just got blessed by the yt algorithm
Great content instant sub
Looking forward for more 😎
Ok but i actually want this to be an actual playable game
I think i would actualy play the game and even pay like 5$ if they actualy made a game like this instead of the actual game.
What a coincidence that I got that exact same ad you showed when I clicked on this video
i was totally not expecting the racing lagoon machine complete music at the end of the video and am always pleasantly surprised when music from the game shows up
I already knew about this months ago, it sucks that such a cool game concept was never a game.
I’m hoping so badly that someone makes this into an actual game. It’s such an interesting concept and I’d love to see it. The company struck a gold mine but they refuse to get the gold from it
CZcams randomly recommended this video to me and I loved it! Amazingly structured video. Also you’re voice is nice to listen to, if that’s not weird 😅
YOOOOOOOOOOOOOO i cant believe you put grand in the vid. and this was mad recent too cuz of black rock shooter being the current Collab. WE NEED MORE PEOPLE PLAYING GRAND
There's gotta be a guy who can make us these ads as a real game
I remember downloading evertale day 1 it was released (cracked of course lmao) and finish the main story in probably a week. It was a pretty generic story but it's still fun and the gameplay is serviceable. It's very sad it devolves into this... Weird stuff since I still play their other game to this day, Neo Monsters.
