I strongly suspect that many of these "fakeout reveal of something everyone actually wants" pranks are the result of someone mid-level at a company fully understanding the demand for something and then hoping that they can use the public response to the prank to demonstrate to their reluctant higher-ups that yes, there is in fact a demand for it and it should be greenlit.

Always loved how Mojang (Minecraft devs) make over the top April fools jokes while releasing it as an experimental snapshot for everyone to play even after April 1st.
Yeah, I loved 15w14a (Love and Hugs), 20w14infinity, 22w13oneBlockAtATime and 23w13a_or_b. Many others were also pretty cool, but these four (and also Minecraft 2.0 in 2013, but I didn’t get to experience it in real time due to none of the few CZcamsrs I used to watch getting it) were a lot of fun well beyond the day.
I can’t wait to be pranked today in the streets by getting smashed in the face with a metal baseball bat at full swing and left to bleed out from my skull on the ground hearing “it’s just a prank bro”.
One of the nicer April fools jokes by a company this year (in my eyes) was in Project Moon’s game Limbus Company. There was no fake reveals or mean spirited prank announcements, just a cute little joke cutscene referencing other gachas, a little smattering of gacha currency and a few exp items or free draw tickets as a thank you for your time, and the second half of an energy burn event they were doing at the moment. Simple, fun, and cruelty-free, just what companies should do for this “holiday”.
“Gullible kids fall for these articles” I was one of those kids. I read that you could unlock Sonic and Tails in Melee and I love Sonic so I did the requirement of beating 20+ Brutal Wireframes in the hardest Melee fights and took several tries until I got 26+ defeated. Sadly no Sonic and Tails and went “Aw man… where are they?” wasn’t until later I realized it was a joke. Still I got better at playing Smash Melee as a result.

A funny thing that happened on an April Fools Day was the Obey Me devs announcing that there was going to be an anime, in-game trailer and everything, which had fans conflicted on whether it was real or not (I personally thought it was real). They made another video about the anime, so it confirmed that it was, in fact, real. Not even sure if they did that as poor timing or to fuck with the fans lol

The first one is the worst, you get all giddy and excited about something new that looks too good to be true and then you see the date it was posted, iys cheep and not funny

That "Touhou Profile" (Touhou x Valkyrie Profile) game that showed up for a bit in the video is still the hardest hitting April Fools for me. The graphics and animations are top notch, the aesthetic is on point and it just looks like a great mix and a fun idea but sadly the actual attempt someone did make wasn't nearly as good as the AF version.

Their pixels are the same size as all the other pixels on blocks and other mobs; it's actually "consistent" with the rest of the game. It's mobs like Ghasts who are wrong; they just made a tiny model and stretched it to be huge, making giant pixels. Bats are the reverse, its a large model shrunk so has tiny pixels! Thats called mixels which generally should be avoided

All packed to the brim with early 2010’s Wayforward humor (and more comedic stylings), different art styles from pixel art to 3D, with animation that all can even match the games it’s referencing, hell, even cameos of game characters. Ideally, it would be really cool if the entire game industry got together to make the biggest homage to video games… well, EVER!! And all packaged in a pink & glitter exterior. I know cookie run: kingdom April fool jokes are pretty simple, but I love them! This year they turned some of their characters into anime and made doki doki literature club basically, and last year all the cookies available could eat "shroomies" and they either turned into really pretty art or weird and funny stuff! Like dark cacao cookie turned into a little gnome, and he's the most serious cookie in the game (so I had a laugh at that) cookie run is going to flames with all the controversies and it becoming more pay to win, but I will always love it.
Landfall games is the chaddest of chads in this regard; Literally half of their current game lineup was released as April Fools "jokes", heck even their biggest game ever (Totally Accurate Battle Simulator) released with a bonus rick roll-into-pre-alpha-menu on April First, before you clicked on play and got the actual full release of the game that just so happened to be included with the prank too. They've even renamed it to "Landfall day", a few years ago doing a nintendo-direct style presentation on the four HUGE announcements and releases all happening on the same day, two of my favorite games from them coming from this (Rounds, which is still relatively active, and Knightfall, which has sadly died off)

( I personally really enjoy long horror videos wendigoon style) (TL;DR at bottom) One of the best April Fool's day events that you probably don't care about is Kasane Teto Synth V Basically, there are vocal synthesizer programs vocaloids (the most famous being hatsune miku). There was a joke vocaloid announced called Kasane Teto on April fools almost 15 years ago. The Fandom adopted it and even made their own fan voice bank for her in the utau engine. She was only slightly acknowledged by Crypton (the right holders of Miku and other vocaloids.) A common idea in the Fandom is that Teto dreams of one day being a real recognized vocaloid. This year, Teto finally got an official, legitimate, liscenced voice bank in an engine called Synth V. People say that she finally achieved her dream. TL;DR a joke character finally achieved their dream of being officially licensed and recognized.

That final fantasy game hits home, A lot of mobile games that try and start out small like that and then just add on over time tend to lose sight of what the original project was and somewhat more recently, that Pokémon Masters game by DeNA was awesome when they first started out because it was like iconic Pokémon trainers, their signature Pokémon, and it felt like a very polished crossover fanfic, and I downloaded it at launch and played for probably like a year and a half straight, but it got to a point to where I had finished the story mode, I had all my characters maxed out, and now I was using my in-game currency and even real-world money to try and get new event characters that I actually had been waiting for and yet I couldn't get them because the drop rates were so low, any new event that started you couldn't even participate well in if you didn't have like the event characters, and they always did like 2-4 new ones at a time so unless.you get them all everytime then you're not gonna have fun with the events, and that really sucked because a lot of these events would be like. Oh well, these characters get a certain boost and so you take them in there knowing how good they are because they've worked well for you in the past. But now because there's all kinds of crazy stuff that only this one event character can deal with. You can't do anything in the battle and sucked, I guess they've tried changing it up a little bit more since then but I know for certain they left their atrocious gacha odds be

There's this trailer online about 3 RPG Maker Horror Games being turned into a fan made anime. The games were IB, Mad Father, and a third one I forgot but it was really well animated and got me hyped. Then I realized what date it was released on and I've been salty ever since.
April fools is getting so powerful it makes it hard for me to trust anything on the month of April and sometimes even after it because people fail to get their jokes out on that month or they upload the day after or a few days after... It's just painful and the fact that you look back on them Years later being like "HUH This video is what I need" only to realize it's a Video that was uploaded on April First a year ago is one of the worst feelings.

Tf2 has always been my favorite game to use April fools to their advantage, having the community create entire maps for an in-game game mode, with goofy rules and ideas.
Last year the Metal Archives, a site that autistically catalogues every metal band to ever exist, even if they only had one demo in like 1986, had an April Fools gag where every single band was replaced with a random photo of a cat. Well maybe not entirely random, as Burzum had one of those Hitler stache cats sooo... but yeah that was wholesome and I hoped they'd do something similar this year. Sadly, no dice. 😿
H3VR has some of my favorite April fool's things. The game is a weapon simulator/ arcade action VR game. It started off as little noise makers. Then, a cardboard deagle and a hand gun for giants. Then, a 3 round 50 BMG revolver and a gun that is just a handle, a bullet, and a mallet. Next year's was a MASSIVE potato cannon and a hair spray can. The year afterwards was a remake of a long forgotten gamemode, 2 weird rifle things, and a shotgun that launches you in the air with recoil. Last year, they added a 20mm (anti aircraft boolet), brake action AR15 and a Fisher Price toy as a shotgun. This year? Ohohohoho, they added a pump action MP5 from Shadow the Hedgehog and a PRINGLES RAILGUN. I love this game.
Shoutout to my favourite company, Artix Entertainment who do an april fools thing every year that just messes with their starting area usually, they even released their first ever raid boss thing... and it was a giant chickencow that destroyed the starting area. of course there were meme items for the premium currency, but they have a thing called the buyback shop that remembers anything you bought for that currency, so I just buy everything, get 90% of my cash back and can say I have it.
The most hurtful example of this was when a group of fans of a visual novel i loved announced an incredible fan project and got the OFFICIAL VOICE CAST of the original game involved, just to say “april fools lol XD!!” TWO MONTHS LATER at the end of a beautiful trailer. I will never forgive that shit.
Mine was this year when Chikn Nuggit made a fake new character announcement with the silhouette of a deer. I strongly dislike a number of types of April Fools jokes, usually when too much effort is put into them:
- Actually good ideas that kill the mood
- The 'it's just a prank'
- April Fools that make the product considerably less enjoyable, objectively
- The very super uninspired jokes everyone else does as well
Simply making a non-intrusive but something you can actually smile at would already be enough, but no, big companies performing stunts even weirder than during the Superbowl have to come every year.
Don’t forget the predictably unfunny jokes, like “I’m quitting” or “I died” (yes that has happened before).

That "Touhou Profile" (Touhou x Valkyrie Profile) game that showed up for a bit in the video is still the hardest hitting April Fools for me.
The graphics and animations are top notch, the aesthetic is on point and it just looks like a great mix and a fun idea but sadly the actual attempt someone did make wasn't nearly as good as the AF version.

Their pixels are the same size as all the other pixels on blocks and other mobs; it's actually "consistent" with the rest of the game. It's mobs like Ghasts who are wrong; they just made a tiny model and stretched it to be huge, making giant pixels. Bats are the reverse, its a large model shrunk so has tiny pixels! Thats called mixels which generally should be avoided

Man, Cat Girl Without Salad would be the most weirdest but most awesome game that could potentially kill almost every video-game genre bird with one stone if it was done the way it was described in Wayforward’s initial April Fools description than the final game we got, even though I understand the latter was the most realistic way to make the game.

I know cookie run: kingdom April fool jokes are pretty simple, but I love them! This year they turned some of their characters into anime and made doki doki literature club basically, and last year all the cookies available could eat "shroomies" and they either turned into really pretty art or weird and funny stuff! Like dark cacao cookie turned into a little gnome, and he's the most serious cookie in the game (so I had a laugh at that) cookie run is going to flames with all the controversies and it becoming more pay to win, but I will always love it.

Landfall games is the chaddest of chads in this regard; Literally half of their current game lineup was released as April Fools "jokes", heck even their biggest game ever (Totally Accurate Battle Simulator) released with a bonus rick roll-into-pre-alpha-menu on April First, before you clicked on play and got the actual full release of the game that just so happened to be included with the prank too. They've even renamed it to "Landfall day", a few years ago doing a nintendo-direct style presentation on the four HUGE announcements and releases all happening on the same day, two of my favorite games from them coming from this (Rounds, which is still relatively active, and Knightfall, which has sadly died off)

Some of my favorite April Fool's "jokes" are when fans make well made mods for a game and package it as a trailer. One guy remade the backdrop of the Darth Maul fight from Phantom Menace into Battlefront 2.
I gotta agree that Lovers of Aether and The Murder of Sonic are some of my favorites just because they're actual games. People making real announcements on April Fools is always funnier than a joke that leaves you disappointed

This year's Minecraft April Fools update pissed me off for this exact reason. In a way, they included vertical slabs and lighting with different colours - aka some of the MOST REQUESTED FEATURES by the ENTIRE COMMUNITY for literal years. It's like they're almost mocking us

Back in 2019 the creators of Rivals of Aether released a trailer for a spin-off dating sim called "lovers of aether", given that the date was april 1, everyone just assumed it was a goofy joke. But later that same day they actually went and released the game. Bit meta, but it's best april fools joke that comes to mind.

I appreciate the April fool joke Battlebit Remastered did.
They had the intro to the game be a parody of the Hub. Battle Hub. Then while in game dead bodies would have 0 gravity allowing funny moments where allies pleating in proximity chat begging to be revived while drifting into the sky.

One of the best April Fool's day events that you probably don't care about is Kasane Teto Synth V
Basically, there are vocal synthesizer programs vocaloids (the most famous being hatsune miku). There was a joke vocaloid announced called Kasane Teto on April fools almost 15 years ago.
The Fandom adopted it and even made their own fan voice bank for her in the utau engine. She was only slightly acknowledged by Crypton (the right holders of Miku and other vocaloids.)
A common idea in the Fandom is that Teto dreams of one day being a real recognized vocaloid.
This year, Teto finally got an official, legitimate, liscenced voice bank in an engine called Synth V. People say that she finally achieved her dream.
TL;DR a joke character finally achieved their dream of being officially licensed and recognized.

That final fantasy game hits home, A lot of mobile games that try and start out small like that and then just add on over time tend to lose sight of what the original project was and somewhat more recently, that Pokémon Masters game by DeNA was awesome when they first started out because it was like iconic Pokémon trainers, their signature Pokémon, and it felt like a very polished crossover fanfic, and I downloaded it at launch and played for probably like a year and a half straight, but it got to a point to where I had finished the story mode, I had all my characters maxed out, and now I was using my in-game currency and even real-world money to try and get new event characters that I actually had been waiting for and yet I couldn't get them because the drop rates were so low, any new event that started you couldn't even participate well in if you didn't have like the event characters, and they always did like 2-4 new ones at a time so unless.you get them all everytime then you're not gonna have fun with the events, and that really sucked because a lot of these events would be like. Oh well, these characters get a certain boost and so you take them in there knowing how good they are because they've worked well for you in the past. But now because there's all kinds of crazy stuff that only this one event character can deal with. You can't do anything in the battle and sucked, I guess they've tried changing it up a little bit more since then but I know for certain they left their atrocious gacha odds be

i like the companies that give actual product, even if its a joke item. remember getting some sort of mount for eso, cant remember if it was halloween or april fools but thw mount was a flaming (haunted) toy horse stick, complete with the animation being just the character galloping with the horse stick while making horse noises, and not actual horse noises, but a person sounding horse noises
I remember beat saber once forced "left handed mode" on for every song you'd play without actually displaying that it was turned on. As someone who doesn't track the dates I actually reinstalled the entire game several times which is a pain to do with 2000+ downloaded songs
Honestly the only time I would advertise a game for AF is to make it look completly awful (and I don't mean in the weird but I am interested) kinda like how Rovio's AP joke in 2018 was a crypto currency (It was a rickroll) (honestly they are pretty good at AF jokes like making an infamous meme canon for a AB Friends event this year).

There's this trailer online about 3 RPG Maker Horror Games being turned into a fan made anime. The games were IB, Mad Father, and a third one I forgot but it was really well animated and got me hyped. Then I realized what date it was released on and I've been salty ever since.
April fools is getting so powerful it makes it hard for me to trust anything on the month of April and sometimes even after it because people fail to get their jokes out on that month or they upload the day after or a few days after...
It's just painful and the fact that you look back on them Years later being like "HUH This video is what I need" only to realize it's a Video that was uploaded on April First a year ago is one of the worst feelings.

being able to actually watch an adult swim broadcast real-time was a weird treat, we don’t have [AS] down under so watching the full version of space ghost coast to coast episode one along with hundreds of people was pretty fun lmao, especially seeing reactions from people who hadn’t watched the episode ^_^
While I can't say it completely got me since it didn't actually look like something that could be possible at all, the Splatoon Island one was one that made me greatly wish such a thing was possible.

I had a Dragon Quest Orochi in Brave EXVIUS for a while, but somehow deleted my save and haven’t been able to get back into it. I miss my multi headed dragon.
Also, The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog, unironicaly my favorite Sonic game. It’s just good.
Tf2 has always been my favorite game to use April fools to their advantage, having the community create entire maps for an in-game game mode, with goofy rules and ideas.

Splatoon Island brought back some memories
Last year the Metal Archives, a site that autistically catalogues every metal band to ever exist, even if they only had one demo in like 1986, had an April Fools gag where every single band was replaced with a random photo of a cat. Well maybe not entirely random, as Burzum had one of those Hitler stache cats sooo... but yeah that was wholesome and I hoped they'd do something similar this year. Sadly, no dice. 😿

H3VR has some of my favorite April fool's things. The game is a weapon simulator/ arcade action VR game. It started off as little noise makers. Then, a cardboard deagle and a hand gun for giants. Then, a 3 round 50 BMG revolver and a gun that is just a handle, a bullet, and a mallet. Next year's was a MASSIVE potato cannon and a hair spray can. The year afterwards was a remake of a long forgotten gamemode, 2 weird rifle things, and a shotgun that launches you in the air with recoil. Last year, they added a 20mm (anti aircraft boolet), brake action AR15 and a Fisher Price toy as a shotgun. This year? Ohohohoho, they added a pump action MP5 from Shadow the Hedgehog and a PRINGLES RAILGUN. I love this game.

Shoutout to my favourite company, Artix Entertainment who do an april fools thing every year that just messes with their starting area usually, they even released their first ever raid boss thing... and it was a giant chickencow that destroyed the starting area. of course there were meme items for the premium currency, but they have a thing called the buyback shop that remembers anything you bought for that currency, so I just buy everything, get 90% of my cash back and can say I have it.
The most hurtful example of this was when a group of fans of a visual novel i loved announced an incredible fan project and got the OFFICIAL VOICE CAST of the original game involved, just to say “april fools lol XD!!” TWO MONTHS LATER at the end of a beautiful trailer. I will never forgive that shit.

Mine was this year when Chikn Nuggit made a fake new character announcement with the silhouette of a deer. Now, I already knew it was April Fools, but after having adamantly begged for a deer character for months because I am obsessed with deer to an unhealthy degree, I kinda felt personally attacked tbh.
