When it comes to traffic lights, when the light I'm at is green and if I'm the first one at that light, I always wait a couple seconds before going. That way I'm more likely to avoid any possible red light runners.
Don't just wait...look all around the intersection and the streets leading to it before moving into it......
Yeah, that's what I did at a light, I hesitated just in case, and then a car came speeding past me through the intersection and continued going between cars in the left turn lane to my right. I got it on the cam.

Ok, one of the biggest lessons I’ve learned (and everyone needs to learn) from these videos is if there are cars stopped in a lane- slow down and check for a car crossing into your lane
That's standard training in Britain. Maintain ambient awareness at all times. Do not drive into closing danger.

The amount of people who lack the deductive reasoning capabilities to allow them to say, "Hey, everyone is stopped... Maybe I should stop too" is absolutely mind blowing.
Thanks to watching these videos, I saw the warning signs and slammed on my brakes right before I saw that someone was about to shoot through in front of me a couple weeks ago. All my junk in the passenger seat hit the floor but the crash would have been unavoidable if I hadn't preemptively hit the brakes. Thanks WBD!

@6:13 Technically the Mercedes had the right of way, but it is possible that the oncoming car was simply unable to stop in the snow. Best to be sure approaching traffic is able to stop before pulling out in front of it.

In that case, the car that ran the red was not driving to the conditions and travelling too fast or with the wrong tyres. You can't blame road conditions, you have to drive to suit...
@@ledsalesoz I agree the driver who ran the red light is at fault, regardless of weather. However, the driver of the Mercedes drove straight into the oncoming law breaker's path. So that driver while not legally at fault, isn't demonstrating great judgement.
Traffic faults don't require "mens rea" - the misdeed is committed with or without the driver's will. Drive slow enough to stop in the prevailing conditions.
Can someone explain how the Mercedes had the right of way? You clearly see their light turn red before they turn. Looks like both ran the red light to me.

Based on what I can tell from the video, it appears that the light turned red, right before the Honda entered the intersection. My guess is that the Honda driver was clearly at fault for running a red light.
It would probably be because they had enough evidence, and/or the driver at fault was honest enough about what happened that they didn't need it.
I found that to be astonishingly stupid as well! He definitely should have gratefully accepted a copy! Even if the other guy had admitted fault, people change their stories sometimes, it's always good to have as much evidence as you can, especially when someone's going out of their way to offer it to you !
Watching this reminds me that I"m seeing more and more people running red lights. Personally I hate to through a yellow light. Great footage and will buy a dash cam as soon as I can afford it.
Had one speed through on my way home from work today just as my turn light went green. I've taken to waiting a moment before going forward thanks to these videos.

Right by Daytona International, pretty common.
Most likely burnout marks, not slamming on the brakes.

So glad that here in Germany, an insurance is mandatory and required upon getting the license plate...
But it is always amazing how fast these accidents get expensive...
It's required in most of the US too, put people pay for the first month, get the license plate an then stop paying. In my state, that is reported an you loose your license. Other stated only find out if you get stopped or crash.
In Britain, the car has a permanent registration plate; the annual tax is separate. Insurance is compulsory, but organisations with large funds can be self-insured.
Insurance is required to drive in Minnesota, but Wisconsin (to our east) doesn't require it. Odd, given WI likely gets more "lake effect snow" than we do (one great lake apparently trumps 10,000+ smaller ones, lol).
Edit: Doesn't keep people from driving without insurance, though--and we're seeing a lot of people keeping their temp plates, which means we might have "ghost cars" up here, now, too. 😓

ALOT OF THESE ACCIDENTS CAN BE AVOIDED IF YOU EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED AND DRIVE IN A DEFENSIVE WAY! This how it was in my high school drivers education class. Just stay alert to other drivers and try to have a way to avoid situations!
Everytime i watch dashcam videos from the us i am shocked how often people run red lights it happens rarely here in germany
You probably have the proper amount of yellow light dwell time to allow people to safely get through the intersection or stop. Here in America they set the yellow light duration at sometimes 1 or 2 seconds to increase the revenue from red light runners.
@@brandonhebert5485not true at all, at least not everywhere in the US. I have never had a problem stopping for a yellow in time, but that's because I use a yellow light for what it's meant - to start slowing down and prepare to stop. A lot of folks these days seem to take the yellow as a "speed up and beat it before it turns red" kind of light.
It is beyond ridiculous the amount of people I see running red-lights everyday because they can't be bothered to stop.

@@brandonhebert5485 no they are timed accordingly with speed limits on the roads. If you are doing the speed limit and stop when the light turns yellow as you are supposed to you will be able to stop in time every time. This comment just tells everyone you speed.
Here in Germany, we actually have discipline and are required to do drivers training. Over ther in the USA, they find their license in the cereal box, or taped to the side of a milk carton and are required to do no training. smh...

Also, more examples of why when you see cars out of control and sliding you hit the brakes. The Mercedes that flew past Ferah wouldn't have hit the pickup as well if the pickup would've just slowed down.
I hate being at a red light when an emergency vehicle is approaching. Last time that happened i was in a company vehicle with forward facing and driver facing cameras. I was so terrified I would get in trouble for running a red I tried everything to get out of the way including hopping the curb. Nothing worked so I had no choice, luckily I didn't get in trouble for that.
Hi, thank you for doing your best to move. Emergency vehicles should do everything possible to drive defensively and not push drivers into an intersection, we never recommend drivers enter an intersection at a red light to move for an emergency vehicle. Most intersections have space infront of the stop line as a cushion or for cross walks, if you can move into that space and hard left or right it is usually safer than flat entering the intersection at a red light. Especially since you don't have sirens. Also. If you have an emergency vehicle behind you and the light turns green, get through the intersection before pulling over. If you can turn right and make a u-turn to come back to your route, that is also acceptable. Basically, avoid running straight through a red light intersection if at all possible. I can't speak for every overzealous emergency vehicle operator but in general we'd rather wait 30sec for a green than have someone pull into an intersection and cause a wreck which we call a wake collision.
Not justifying what happened but...stay out of the left lane Kai 2:55, it doesnt matter how fast you're going there is always someone wanting to go faster and the tarmac on your right was free.
0:53 Uhhh, actually, funny thing about semi trucks. They actually stop QUICKER when they're loaded heavily. Their brakes make a ridiculous amount of stopping force but their tires can't utilize it all. The more weight you pile onto them the more traction they get and they don't get past that point where the inertia from that extra weight overwhelms the added stopping power that the extra traction allows them to access. It seems counter-intuitive because it doesn't work quite the same with automotive brakes, but with semi trucks, they stop better the closer they are to DOT weight limit.
Of course they're also more unstable and more prone to tipping over, but still.
Fun fact: Bobtail tractors have so little brake force applied to their drive axles that they might as well only be running on front brakes. There's so little traction back there when bobtail that even the slightest whiff of brake application will cause all eight drives to lock up tight. They have a proportioning valve built into their brake systems to account for this automatically.
I was just going to point that out. It amazes me how someone who deals with driving story videos actually knows so little about road vehicles.
@@morrij01 Most people who've never worked on or driven them have no clue about it. They think semi truck brakes work exactly the same as the brakes on their passenger car, which are already close enough to their maximum effectiveness unladen that their stopping distance *does* increase the heavier they load up.
Truck brakes are a whole different animal.

It was your videos and crash dash on FB that made me realize just how dangerous traffic is so I informed my dad to get dash cameras to help him in case he needs it. 🤣

Chris was entering the intersection at aproximately mach 2, in the wrong lane, leaving the Nissan driver with less than 1 second to react between when Chris Verstappen the F1 driver appearing in view and the vehicles hitting eachother, yet somehow Chris wasn't found at 50/50 fault for causing such a massive crash?
He was indeed going the speed limit. Other guy didn't yield for the unprotected left turn. Should have seen Chris coming around the bend 10 seconds before.

I recall years ago in the early 00s my dad’s Jetta was involved in a horrific accident. He broke his little toe, but the driver of the other vehicle had a leg amputated because he broke it in 3 places.

Oh this is just shocking because they do have those remotes that will change the traffic light to green so the ambulance can get all the way through town on green lights. Just last month I pulled over for an ambulance and then I entered the road and followed him all the way through town. Green light go all the way. Lol
Afterwords the traffic lights will just resume their normal schedule.

1:34 there have bean systems for over a decade now that will turn the lights green for emergency serves how is this not mandatory for intersections yet? even just the large or high traffic ones and the ones on slopey areas or tight places where where it can be hard to see.
When I lived in San Angelo, TX, back in the 70's, all the traffic lights went red when emergency vehicles were coming near the intersection.
@@annwithaplan9766 really? wow if they did in fact have that sort of stuff way back then, then theres no excuse for not having it wide spread now.
its not even a complex system its just a sensor that picks up coded flashing IR light on emergency vehicles, once it gets the right code it turns all the lights red then turns the lights in the direction the emergency vehicle is coming from green so people at the intersection can clear the way.
On clip 12 with the totaled 4-runner, there are skid marks at the intersection and it looks like the same exact accident happened there not that long ago.

6:01 I am a Canadian and frequently drive in these winter conditions. It is common practice to not use a yellow to make a left unless everyone has stopped, best to wait for the next light cycle as it is hard to get going to make the left on the slippery road and not everyone can stop on a dime such as in this case.

This accident could've killed someone, and in most instances the ambulance now has to deal with this accident and call for another ambulance to deal with the original call
Absolutely correct..I drove fire trucks for 32 years and saw it often. We would cringe when it would happen. It was our cities policy if we where back in traffic at a red light where our admitters would change the lights we were to turn off the sirens to stop people from freaking out and causing a wreck

3:11 typically only those who DON'T pass the field sobriety are arrested, unless they have an active warrant is the only exception I'm aware of. But you know the results in terms of pass or fail of the field sobriety based on the other driver being arrested. I'd also find a personal injury attorney and sue the other driver.
I truly believe the English have it right. Every driver involved in a collision is given a field breathalyzer test. That includes on duty Police Officers! Takes the discretion out of the equation, meaning that the Defence claim of malicious prosecution or insufficient evidence to warrant the charge is automatically invalid. Removes loopholes.

That's not just English, Dutch system too. Everybody in a crash is tested to rule out anyone being impaired.
HOWEVER, police does not attend crashes with no personal injuries, so if you have a crash and the other driver is impaired, you need to show significant initiative and take risk to detain the other driver and then inform police that you have someone detained on suspicion of drunk driving and need cops to attend.
If police refuse (which they worryingly often do) explain that they're getting a call about a fight in about 2 minutes then, because if they won't attend you'll be forced to use violence to keep them there. Cops will always attend then. NEVER say you meant use violence against them, ALWAYS explain you misspoke and meant use violence to keep the criminal from fleeing the scene.
