- Here's a recap of all the entries that received zero points in Eurovision Song Contest. It also includes entries that received zero points from either the jury or the televoters in 2016 and onwards. Please, enjoy!
As each participating country casts a series of preference votes, under the current scoring system it is rare that a song fails to receive any points at all; such a result means that the song failed to make the top ten most popular songs in any country.
The first zero points in Eurovision were scored in 1962, under a new voting system. When a country finishes with a score of zero, it is often referred to in English-language media as nul points or nil points, albeit incorrectly. Grammatical French for "no points" is pas de points, zéro points or aucun point, but none of these phrases are used in the contest; before 2016's voting overhaul, no-point scores were not announced by the presenters. Following the change in the voting system, a country receiving no points from the public televote is announced as receiving "zero points".

Portugal 1964 was actually not that bad
UK both times wholly deserved. Least deserving was definitely Germany 2015. Poor girl - that was devastating.

Some of the really early ones were a result of the scoring system, because they gave points to only 3 to 5 countries mostly.
Black smoke (2015 Germany) is one of my all time favorites, unique voice, smooth cords, great vibes.
But the song that really won in Germany that year was much much better.

people always forget that a song could place 11th in every single country's rankings and get 0 points. if nobody likes you enough to put you top 10 then it is what it is.
Not just that, but in the televoting, most of us only vote for one song. Even if you're everyone's 2nd favourite, most of them aren't going to vote for you
This is why the voting system of the early 70s gave a more accurate result. You had to give every entry a score between 1-10. There was no ignoring any entry that didn't figure in your top 10.
It doesnt matter how bad the song is. After all the Hard work and Time a person spent on a song, No One deserves 0p

All the 0 points means is you didn't make a top ten. It's not a grade.
They use a system in Junior Eurovision that gives everyone points no matter what. It's seen as treatment for kids haha.
Unfortunately you can't ensure that every song places in at least one country's top 10 even if some place it in the middle

ESC 2021 will forever be known as the contest which got the most "nul": 6 (including 1 "nul" from the jury - the UK and 5 "nul" from televote - Czech Republic, Netherlands, Spain, Germany and the UK (again)). =////////////
2021 also had many strong entries. I guess it was bound to happen that there would be a couple nul points
And for a while, it seemed like 2022 was trying to recreate it: Azerbaijan in the semifinal public vote, Germany in the final jury vote and Switzerland in the final public vote all received nul point.
I think with a lot of them, the issue is less being outright bad and it's more a matter of not being memorable enough. Look at all the 2021 examples, most of them either followed or preceded a song the televote loved (Embers coming between Loco Loco and Last Dance, Voy a quedarme following 10 Years, I Don't Feel Hate preceding Dark Side, and Birth of a New Age preceding Zitti e buoni).
I still maintain by the belief that 🇳🇴 1978 and 🇫🇮 1982 didn’t deserve the big 0.
@@JeSuisRene I don't think Norway deserved nul points in 1981 either. I've always liked that song, still Jahn Teigan got the last laugh he sold shed loads of records from being the first nul point scorer under the current system of marking - 1-8 then 10 then 12 points.

@@JeSuisRene Finland 1982 was well deserved because the vocals were very shouty and lacked pitch. In Norway 1978 Jahn Teigen deliberately sabotaged the performance because he hated the arrangement.

I do quite like Austria 2015 and 2017 - apparently Nathan Trent is a lovely guy with a sunny personality too. The Austrian entry of 2019 never sounded that bad to me either or the Icelandic one of 2018 - although if the televoters hadn't given that entry such a pasting they wouldn't have gone eff it and sent Hatari the following year so I'm kinda glad it did.

So, updating for this year:
SUI got 0 in televotes, GER got 0 in the jury.
If you include the Semifinals, Azerbaijan also got 0 points in the televote, and is the first instance of a country qualifying to the final with 0 televote points.
This, along with the Semifinal 2 jury vote scandal, is likely the reason why the Semifinals are switching to 100% televote for the 2023 Contest. (It will still be combined jury and televote points in the Final.)

For me, I often set the last place to score ~20 points in the ideal votings for finals.
Other sets include the winner to score between 500 and 599, and around 100 points are needed to qualify from an SF.
For me, personally, Portugal 1997 is a very beautiful song, and didn't deserve the 0 points - and Germany 2015 as well!

I love Spain 1983 & Turkey 1987 ! (and 2015 Germany, because she has a great voice & Spain 2017, but only because I think the singer is really cute :D) If everyone had always been allowed to sing in English (or whatever language they wanted, voluntarily) the results would have been very different. England and Ireland often sent pretty boring songs to the ESC - but they always got very high ratings because they were allowed to sing in English. Very unfair. Imagine 'Why me' (Ireland 1992) in Turkish, Norwegian, Finnish or German - It would never have won! And so many other great songs fell short just because of the language. Abba were allowed to sing in English at the time, and they won - I don't think that would have happened in Swedish...

@@escliam7667 I don't think it will ever happen, but there can be huge differences between the jury votes and the televotes. In 2016 Poland only got 7 points from the juries but 222 from the televoters, propelling them from 25th up to 8th!
@@davidspear9790 a similar thing happened in 2018 with Sweden’s entry, dropping from 2nd in the jury vote with 253 points to coming 23rd with the public, only getting 21 points.

The least-deserved, in my opinion: Germany 1965, Spain 1965, Finland 1982 (I like punk, what can I say?), Spain 1983, Germany 2015, Austria 2017, Israel 2018, and most of all Netherlands 2021 which deserved way more than it got. Meanwhile, I would've said the same for the Czech Republic in 2021, but dear me, that live performance sank any chance it had.

I think no one deserves 0 points. All these songs from 60s, for example - most of them are just beautiful, aren't they? Finland 1963 is one of my favourite here from this decade.
