- Andrew Huberman is a neuroscientist and tenured professor at Stanford that grew up skating San Francisco's Embarcadero. Andrew’s research touches on fear responses, as well as sleep and dream states and how they relate to learning. We called him up to share some groundbreaking findings that we and professional skateboarder Karl Watson felt other skaters could greatly benefit from.

"Failure is success in progress"
That is the greatest lesson skating taught me

And success is the passion.

Yeah I want to always have that knowledge as 2+2=4, so frustration would be more avoidable or less in scales, because it's irrational.

This is seriously the best thing I have seen in a while. I’ve tried to explain this to people and family. Skating directly translates in life. It makes you accepting, humble, and being ok with failing. It’s selfish and including at the same time. It’s pain and happiness. It’s life. I could go on forever. This is awesome. Jenkem, Ian, Karl you rule. Thank you.
Yeah it’s sad for those never get to experience it bc they are too afraid or thinks it’s dumb. Missing out big time.
It's ALL connected!
Skateboarding has made me a overall better person, learned to accept failure, going into new carreer choices it helps me deal with those mental choices
you said it brother
Its all about ego and self entitlement and destruction of private property.
No fucking way. Been watching his podcast for some time now, but never thought these two interests of mine would intersect. Jenkem, you’re killing it
Super cool when that happens.
Same here
haha I had the same reaction. Ever since I heard he skated EMB I was hoping this crossover would happen
Same vibes !!!
dude idk shit about neuroscience but I kinda rlly wanna learn abt it, whenever i've had a class that covered stuff how the brain works I always found it interesting and wanted to learn more
neuroscientist: be careful about getting dopamine from praise and not the actual activity
karl: are skateboarders better than other people?
Between this and the Herzog interview you guys are giving skating the respect that it’s always deserved.
From a magazine named after huffing shit fumes.
The world is a beautiful place

Love these jenkem interviews
If Andrew Huberman wasn't the coolest scientist before, he certainly is now!
When it comes to skateboarding content, there’s Jenkem, then there’s everybody else.
I'm about to be in tears because it's so satisfying skateboarding and the community is beginning to receive the real respect and recognition it deserves.
"Once a skater, always a skater."
Love you guys.
yep
2 things:
1. Karl Watson the proof that skateboarding's fountain of youth...man looks 28.
2. Love Jenkem...don't quit!
Seriously, people can't believe I am 43. Most people seem to think I am in the low 30s.
Have you seen Alfonso Rawls??
Also no wonder Sean Malto and Chris Chann look younger
Why would Jenkem quit!?
Except bam magera. 😂
I'm glad Karl asked that about (essentially) "getting dopamine from telling people you're GOING to do something". I actually read something about that exact idea, awhile back... and now I swear by it. I won't call tricks, or tell people my ideas with certain things ahead of time, things I'm doing/working on etc. Pretty crazy how the brain works.
Plus, chicks dig it when you're mysterious.
P.S. - Jerry Hsu's falls are always so gnarly and dramatic.
real g's move in silence like lasagna
@@dietrootbeer_ lol, no joke... I use that Wayne quote all the time when explaining this to people. Nicely done!
yeah. that was a "holy shit!" moment lesson for me. Makes so much sense
so true. don't talk about it, be about it.
Not trolling. Just contributing to the conversation. Talking about something may be one step to make something a reality. I think the recent idea has been referred to as "to manifest your reality" by talking about it. Not sure how close language is to mental imagery (as far the brain connections go), but isn't there a study about athletes imagining better performance without practice and actually getting better? So maybe talking about doing something is a way of imagining it? In any case, there have been a lot times when I've said I'm gonna do something, and then I do it (of course, there's a lot times when I haven't).
In any case, there's a fine line between hyping up something and then never doing it, or worse, not trying to, and actually making an effort (while talking about) to do it.
I am a skater, teacher, and woman. He gives such sound advice. I’m so glad I took the time to listen to this.
I learned how to kickflip in a dream when I was 14 after trying for weeks. Next day after the dream I got it first try.
My 6 year old daughter taught herself how to skate in her sleep... She dreamed it and did it the next day...
Woah this is epic
this happened to me too and i woke up on christmas and kickfliped
Woah this is so obviously fake
Countless tricks have come to me like this. Skating is the ultimate mind, body and spirit connection.
THIS WAS SO GOOD. “Once a skater, always a skater”
wow this is next level. skateboarding needs more recognition like this!
I'd like to hear more from this man.
type his name in and find his podcast, it's really good
Check out his podcast - it is great!
Dr. Huberman hosts the podcast you all need to be listening to! He teaches you how to take care of yourself in transformative ways.
and damn Karl Watson you killed it as an interviewer, and damn Andrew Huberman for your kind and intelligent words
I’m a skateboarder and a Neuroscientist, (currently looking for a job). Awesome to see that Andrew is a skateboarder, i’ve seen him in many podcasts.
Skateboarding basically saved my live. As a kid it was where I found acceptance and camaraderie. It was my escape from the world around me but also put me in touch with the world on some level. I quit for a few years and am finally getting back to it and it brings me joy more than anything in this world!
This is incredible! One of my favorite scientists is a skater!
It was too good for me to comment on. I froze up after drafting three things then cancelling.
Well I'm gonna try that fear eye thing being 44 now it's getting harder to shake it off and I've always said never stop skating it keeps you young at heart and mind..top shit jenkem...

This dude is a legend
Learning how to learn is more valuable than learning any one thing. Thats the main thing ive gained from skateboarding.
This ended up being waaaay more useful of a video than I thought it would be.
"Skateboarding taught me that you keep trying something over and over again, that's critical for science, science is hard, you fail most of the time and then you finally break through and discover something and it really holds up or you publish that paper, it feels amazing - so much better because of that huge stack of failures you have leading up to it.
The other part is community and camaraderie. To this day I have great friends, skateboarding was about being that huge pack, also people push you; when you have a community and you hear about or see people doing something amazing, it pushes you and you use that as fuel to realise what's possible. Skateboarding is an amazing template for life."
- Andrew Huberman
Something that is really interesting is the way the visual cortex creates a virtual map of space and obstacles, that's why when you are skating a park or a spot you already skated before, it feels alot smoother and conftier and you can even do tricks without looking at your feet or the obstacle. It is kinda like walking around your house without the lights on repetitively. Also another thing i find beautiful is reflex motor action (which is said mostly triggered by visual stimuli from the the periphery and not the center of the visual field) skipping or going around little kids in the park or getting of your board when encountering another skater is kinda like brothering the bandwith of visual awareness.
Yah gotta love when my cortex does that.
Ok, I guess I'm gonna start skateboarding again. Coincidentally my 5 year old came up to me earlier today and I said I should skate more. Skated hard from age 12-25 and now that I'm mid 30s I still have a few tricks up my sleeve and for the sake of my health I'll have to brew up a few more.
I'm 34 and still pushing, you got it dude! Got a small channel I started recently.
I refuse to be a poser when taking son to skatepark 💪✅
I have a 2 yr old daughter and im 27. Skateboarding is definitely my favorite part of my days off. And actually landing shit always makes me want to skate more.
I been going hard lately, actually still learning stuff. Did a nollie nose wheelie for the first time on a manny pad yesterday, I've done regular nose wheelies, never nollie though,.until yesterday. I'm 32
@@aronrosas4191 dude! That's awesome. I dont think I got that, hahahaha. Unless the manual pad is a piece of plywood.
What the?! The two channels I've been watching most do a crossover.
This struck home so hard. I’m getting a little emotional

Thank you for that whole explanation. As a skater of over 25 years and epilepsy all my life, the neurological education and monitoring I’ve gone through has been intense and amazing. Even after a second brain surgery at age 25 and working with specialists the brain stimulation of skateboarding was never really put to play in analyzing my issues or aiding them. Thank you for being in the nuero and skate world to share all that info!
He looks like a younger robert de niro
I didn't think i could love this guy more ...... but apparently he just stepped up a few notches in my book!!!! EPIC!!! What a legend....... fall off get back up, best life skill ever
much love and respect to both of you gentlemen.
Thank you for this Jenkem! Much love and respect from Cebu 🙏🏾🙏🏾🤛🏼
I don't comment often but damn thanks Jenkem for providing us this type of videos really 🙏
Yeeees! This was so good. What an informative and inspiring conversation. Thanks for putting this together.
I need more of this! Thank you Andrew and Karl!
So dope. Love this channel and the creative content you put out. Keep them coming!
I was already a fan of Andrew by listening to him on Lex Podcasts, but now knowing that he is an OG my mind just blow rn
This is really cool. Stoked I watched this for sure 🤙
This seriously made my day. such a great perspective on life, on skateboarding, on moments and how to change thinking about them. Seriously such a good guy.
This was a great piece with some really refreshing insights. Karl is the man.
This was amazing. Thank you for sharing. ❤️🔥
I’ve been listening to Andrew and soaking up his knowledge for a couple years now. So crazy to see this video in my feed next to one of his videos. Many thanks for making this happen 🙏 ❤️
Mann...i love this guy...Andrew Huberman!!shout out from Brazil my man!! : ) : )
Wow, this is the coolest interview I've seen this year. And I mean that just speaking in general. Great job!
Absolutely loved this conversation. Thank you Karl for your curiosity and Andrew for your knowledge. A matchup I never thought I'd see!
that was so fire and informative, thank you for this!
Thank you so much for this video. I really appreciate it
Consistently putting out interesting and worthwhile content
AMAZING! BEAUTIFUL TALK!
absolutely beautiful, great tips, interesting stuff, and man just to see how much passion dr. huberman has for skating really says it all. he seemed so compelled to make the main point that skating is unique, special, and incredibly helpful for your overall progression through life. nice
Great interview. The correlation between skating and dreaming is very interesting.
This conversation also reminds me of a recent interview Tony Hawk gave, where he talked about "not being Happy" when you finally land a Truck.
Where you spent so much Time and Effort working on the Trick, that by the Time you land it you're just glad it's over.
Great conversations to have about Mental Well-being and pre-empting the "Darkness" that can sneak in.
Once a skater, always a skater. Keep spreading the love Karl!! Andrew is the man
Looking forward to this, awesome side of skateboarding to explore!
So stoked on this!
Huberman has the best podcast
Great piece! Thank you 🙏
This. Was. Amazing. Bravo to everyone involved. Great job, Karl.
What a great chat! Thanks
Exactly what I needed just now. Thanks 🙏🏽
DAAAMN YOU ARE GREAT, thank you for all your work
Great interview, great questions!
Solid, solid content!!!! Thoroughly enjoyed. Super interesting.
Gracias!!!
Much love for the skateboarding community 🖤
Excellent video and great life lessons. Thank you from a skateboarder ❤
This made my fucking day dude, hearing huberman talk about his roots with skating was one thing that played into me getting hooked on his stuff. WORD JENKEM
Yes! Karl Watson was always one of my favourites! Great chat, guys
This was an amazing watch!
Nursing a shoulder injury right now and at 46 seeing this give me hope and motivation... Been using the physiological sigh and lateral eye movements for a while now and they sure bring great relief... Wrote every info I could in my notebook and gonna apply all those tips to skateboarding and every day life... Much love to you all
This is one of the best videos i've watched not even joking.
Amazing interview and best host possible! ;)
such a good video. thank you so much for posting
Loved this! Learned something new, thanks!
Loved this. Thank you!
Speechless. Loved every second
Awesome interview ✨. Blessings to the skateboarding Community 🕊.
Really needed to watch this ⚡🧠⚡ thanks, Jenkem!
Cool interview, Karl! 🤜🤛
Huge follower up Andrew but didn’t know about his love for skateboarding. I’m in my 40s and just now getting back into it. Thx for sharing and keep pushing,
awesome vid, thanks for sharing. starting to really commit to skating in my mid 20s has improved my mental and physical health in ways I was not expecting. Now we just gotta make it through the winter .....
skateboarding helped me through depression, I feel lucky to have lived with skateboarding since childhood until now, these answers on the discussion confirms what I've been thinking all along, skateboarding is the best!!!
Karl Watson is helluva interviewer! Thank you to both G's for the valuable content!
We love you thankyou for what you do. I love neuroscience and psychology aswell as art, music and skateboarding.
awesome! 1st discovered this dude on the rick roll podcast. he has a very science heavy podcast for any science nerds..so much free knowledge..take advantage
Hell yeah Andrew is for sure one of the dopest forward thinking guys right now I love that he is a fan of skateboarding. So sick.
what a great piece this was amazing
such a great interview, so glad I clicked on this video
I'm sooo late on the scene viewing this BUT I'm so happy I found it. @48yo the fear while skateboarding is harsh to deal with.
This video is excellent and much needed!!
This made me feel good about being me and that's being a skateboarder. Thanks Andrew thanks Jenkem.
thank you so much!
Wow skateboarding needed what he is telling us for many many years. Skateboarding is at least 50% mental so it’s important to take care of yourself at all times.
more like 90% mental tbh
@@Jake-dc8yx haha in one of his podcasts he says that this is false. Everything is based upon the neurons, nothing else.
@@rzadigi thats like saying that trains are based upon train tracks, yeah the neurons makes the board do what you want it to do, but you need to understand how a trick works and how to not be a bitch before you can make your legs do it. which i feel like is 90% of skating
@@Jake-dc8yx hey I’m just relaying what the skating neuroscientist said. Take it up with him. Haha
This is magic! Huberman is Science Gandolph. Thanks for a crazy good interview. You know I love that breathwork.
Could listen to this for days!
This is so cool! I can't believe Andrew was skateboarding when he was young. I was skateboarding too in the Netherlands watching video tapes of skateboarders doing moves in the USA including the first Jackass stuff haha. I thought he was cool but now I think he is a legend
Jenkem are one of the very few channels that are making actual quality content. Keep up the good work guys, these are great
I could be trying 5-0 grinds and messing them up but when I think of a trick out the 5-0's aren't missing, you're right. I'm gonna try that thing with my eyes, thanks bro!
