Woodturning - A Mulberry Burl

  • In this video I take a really punky Mulberry Burl and turn a Hollow Form Vessel, I used some wood rot hardener on this and plenty of coats of sanding sealer to toughen it up and added some epoxy resin, coloured with an antique copper mica powder to some of the voids and finished it with Yorkshire Grit abrasive paste and a microcrystaline wax ..

When I saw you gouging out the nub I thought you had lost it and put a hole in the side instead. Yet, as usual you do mot disappoint and give us something to incredible to see. I did not count but I would guess you used about every turning tool you had on the vessel. It is a wood that will beat you and your tools up. But, once you get through the rough spots it takes a sharp edge beautifully with minimum sanding. Great job Andy, thank you for showing off that beautiful wood.

I've watched you work enough that I know something amazing is always going to come out of your efforts, but it's still beyond what I can imagine and always fascinates me. Seeing the end result yes, but also the process. I think what I enjoy the most is you inventing on the spot. You stop, turn your piece in different directions, apparently see the vision in your mind's eye and jump right in. It must have taken you years and years and years to achieve the abilities that you apparently possess in order to do these types of beautiful pieces out of almost nothing. And I'm sure part of the process is you being able to see what you can make in your imagination then putting it to work and having it come out so beautifully. Thank you for another restful and worthwhile video. Carolyn D

I love your skill and creativity. It is very satisfying to watch you turn a piece of wood, with no identifiable characteristics into a unique and beautiful useable household item.
Though to be honest I love the moment when you finish sanding and then highlight the spots and lines once hidden. Simply inspiring.

It looked so much like a planet that I was SURE that epoxy would be a variation of green or blue, but I love how it turned out with the red copper!

Perfect choice on the epoxy color, it almost looks natural like you didnt even use it. What a gorgeous piece, thanks for the video we all appreciate it!

The beauty of this piece is in the endless patterns of the grain. Only human artistry could make this happen, but also only with true respect for nature's work. Nature doesn't rule; nor does the human element. The end result is harmony.

I must say, you always have nice sharp gouges, as evidenced by the nature of the cuttings.
I'm sure that makes for better work in the end.
