Sinead O´Connor appeared at the Bob Dylan tribute concert on October 16, 1992. I was lucky to be there with my wife, and we had to witness one of the hardest and out-of-place moments in rock history. At that event, we were celebrating the 30-year career of one of the most beloved, admired, criticized, and controversial rock singers, Bob Dylan, who for years sang and protested against injustice and was in favor of civil and human rights. Sinead was one of the guest invited artists that night. But when she took the stage, she got booed by more than half of the concertgoers at Madison Square Garden because two weeks before the concert, she tore up the photo of the pope at SNL in protest of the abuse of children by the church. Even so, Sinead dared to face this terrible sexist audience full of hypocrites and frauds that couldn´t understand that women have the right to raise their voices. The saddest thing to assimilate was that all these people who booed Sinead were at the concert to show respect and admiration for someone who has always protested and defended human rights. Hard to believe.
Rest in peace, Sinead. "Nothing compares to you."

When she stood there after telling them to not yet play… we witnessed the contrast between two types of human nature. And that was powerful. Those who stand against evil… and those who go with the flow of what they are taught by dark tradition.

I have often wondered about that, too. I don't think they really get Bob either. If they did, they would shut up and listen. She had made some uncomplimentary comments about the Pope, and Bob had just gone Christian - so much for the toleration of Christians. It was disgusting treatment. But Sinead starred them down like the courageous woman we know her to be. What a man Kris is. He didn't leave her alone on that stage.

She is brilliant, she is crazy, she’s an idiot, she’s a sage. A lot of this can the attributed to her crazy upbringing, combined with her talent and sensitivity.
Wait another few years, and she’ll probably become a Zen monk, or an animist, or a member of the Baha’i faith, or maybe she’ll circle around and become Catholic again. It’s just she’s very fluid, unlike most people. Just read her Wikipedia page, and her inner life seems like a roller coaster
“Genuinely I don’t mean disrespect to Catholic people because I believe in Jesus Christ, I believe in the Holy Spirit, all of those, but I also believe in all of them, I don't think it cares if you call it Fred or Daisy, you know? Religion is a smokescreen, it has everybody talking to the wall. There is a Holy Spirit who can't intervene on our behalf unless we ask it. Religion has us talking to the wall. The Christ character tells us himself: you must only talk directly to the Father; you don’t need intermediaries. We all thought we did, and that's ok, we're not bad people, but let's wake up… God was there before religion; it's there [today] despite religion; it'll be there when religion is gone.” -2010

@@alexiasmith6120During an appearance on "Saturday Night Live" in 1992, Shuhada (Sinéad's changed name after she converted to Islam, if you're not aware) tore up a picture of Pope John Paul II to protest child sex abuse in the church. That deeply damaged her reputation because she offended lots of people. You can see the consequences of her actions in this video; the audience doesn't hold back. However, during the Pope's papacy and after his death, there were various controversies and allegations surrounding the Catholic Church. As of 2023, according to a Polish journalistic investigation, Pope John Paul II was aware of paedophilia cases and tried to cover them up by transferring priests to other dioceses to avoid scandal.
She was eager to protest abuse. She knew the truth. She wasn't afraid to speak it. But the public just didn't want to accept it. Tragic.

My 12 year-old self, who humourlessly thought she re-wrote the handbook on how to destroy her career, revisited this clip for the first time as an adult after her death. This was like prying open the jaws of a lion in order to tickle its tonsils! She had a chance to be meek, be apologetic, but instead she doubled down! She backed herself and the truths that needed to be told. We could easily have lost her three decades earlier than we did, and instead we got this uncompromising moment.

The BEST thing about this Dylan-tribute concert! Disgracefully edited out of the DVD. And one of the most moving moments in ANY concert, EVER!
I LOVE Kris Kristofferson's interactions: before, during (he whispers to her "Don't let the bastards get you down!"), and after.

For those that are new to this...in the face of a hostile crowd, at 1:48 Kristofferson hugs her and says "Don't let the bastards get you down" to give her the courage to carry on, kisses her head and exits.
That is what manliness is. Be more like Kris.
