Mustaine's genius was that he realised it was easier to teach an accomplished jazz guitarist metal, than it was too teach a metaller how to be good on the guitar.
problem w great guitar players is they need a great song to be known. people that know megadeth know chris. i wuldnt say hes underated, he jus never got in the spotlight again after 2 albums w megadeth
What I love about CHris's playing is that he doesn't sound like every shredder out there. I hear a little John Mclaughlin in his style. And no tapping which is a breath of fresh air. He is more an extension of s 70's player, with a lot more chops.
amsedelm Also, he can create fast, but contagious licks, his work on Peace Sells is my favourite guitar work, every lick in that album fits right the fuck in and adds to it, and i totally agree, he is a 70's player, he said cream was a big influence(yes they're from the 60's but they're ahead of their time)
@@andym28 i cant get into maghaclan or even remember to spell his name right. his playing is not very memorable n i put him n the same category as engvaye mawemsteem. forgettable
" So I'll just wait for things to build and ....(plays some mind boggling intelligent and non generic bends) "Instead of going....(plays some mind boggling generic blues bends)
LMAO I KNOW. I adored the second "uninteresting" phrase too. It's super simple, and I play guitar, yet hearing it still holds no less interest. It's awesome
Chris Poland = One of the most underrated guitarists ever. So fuckin good he doesn't HAVE to do metal. He did metal and even if he didn't, he never had to if he didn't want to. That's how great and effortless this guy can play.
Incredible tone and technique. His phrasings and building of textures for his leads are SIMPLY PHENOMENAL!!!! This is the style of playing I could listen to for hours. Mindless rambling...none here.
The funny thing is his stuff still sounds the same after all these years. He has a certain TONE and you really can tell when he plays. If you gave me 10 solos without names attached; chances are I could pick his out solo. Weird thou because I can still hear PEACE SELLS whenever he plays....
He always had that sound, if you check his previous band The New Yorkers you can hear that he had the solo for Black Friday like 4 years before the album came out.
How come every time he plays he sounds different and yet, so familiar. I love shredding and all the big shredders but the one i never get tired of is Chris. Jazz, thrash, speed... he can play anything in a way that makes sense.
Ever since I got the vinyl Return to Metalopolis back in '92, he's been a particular favourite of mine - absolutely one of the most underrated players of all time....and in fact one of the most original in rock.
This guy is awesome! He was great in Megadeth but he seems even better on his own. You get to hear more of his own style. Those early days of Megadeth seemed like pure insanity but even then you could see the raw talent of that early band. Loved his work on System has Failed though and OHM and his solo stuff are great too! Awesome player. Will always be the OG Megadeth lead guitarist for me
This awareness of music is something I do greatly want to achieve in my guitar playing. We get so confined to the instrument and forget that it’s simply a medium to create music. When I hear guitar players like Chris Poland, it reminds me these six strings and 24 frets are meant to make music. One day my playing will sound like music :)
You're right. It's easy to loose sight of the fact that we are an instrument too, along with our guitar as a communication medium, through which we're expressing ourself. All the best to you in your musical endeavors and growth as a musician.
wowww Chris's phrasing in Ohm is the best i've heard him play & i saw Megadeth plenty in the 80's & he liked to play fast exotic solo's with multiple bends but he has become such an inovator of his own style;)
When Vai uses the finger tremelo tech, it seems to be more *visual* and when Chris uses it you can actally HEAR it. I love Vai (obviously by my Av) but Chris Poland is really re-kindling my motivation and enthusiasm for guitar playing. His influences say a lot for his style. He is not a clone. He is very unique.
If I could pay ten grand out and have his exact setup and tone, I would not hesitate! It still amazes me how many people haven't had time to sit and appreciate Chris' playing style, he is just impossible to replicate even without his exact tone. Such an over-looked guitarist...
i know about the Pentatonic scale, i use it my self all the time, but his tone is soo huuuge! it just sounds AMAZING when he plays it, i want his tone! :D
They've had a lot of great leads (Megadeth) but this guy played with the most soul out of any of Mustains lead players. The others are speedier and more machine like but this guy added color to Dave.
Whoa man you responded to a comment I wrote a year ago! My opinion kinda changed, Dave's new signature cabs are fucking awesome, I love the tone they got on Endgame.
@zzzhuh Yes, Mustaine said that in a Guitar World interview I read many years ago. I wish I could tell you what issue, but certainly it must be archived. Mustaine and Poland together - they were completely lethal.
@moonsault2506123 well, probably because his severed tendon in his left hand index finger doesn't allow him to bend his index finger from the middle so he has to play with his palm below the neck
wow his vibrato is like....wtf?! love this guy. anyone know whats the score with this note he hits at 44secs? i think its the 16th fret, its the highest note he plays...it just sort of pops out so smooth, with a really soft edge, how the hell does he do that? :O
@zzzhuh I still think it's kind of hard to compare seeing as how Broderick hasn't written anything of his own yet (at least not that has been released), but from the live stuff I've seen, he nails pretty much all their songs perfectly.
Ive never heard a guitar solo sound like his... what is it that makes his solo sounds so unique? its alsmot sounds like a synth or some shit... what a genius...
@destihado1 Yamaha have really great guitars. The only bad thing is that their pickups may not be so great. But when you put in a new one, man they sound even great. Plus they're really easy to play.
@rationemreddere Marty is guitar God in Japan now, nearly equivalent to their version of Hendrix, and Chris Poland has been touring for years with Ohm: and Umphrey's McGee occasionally. Just because they aren't as popular as Deth does not mean they can't be better.
@allrapsucks Really? that is awesome I'd love to read more about that, I have some guitar tracks of him on peace sells like black friday and his tone on those are just amazing, he was a legend then and now he is a legacy.
yeah maybe a hammer on but somehow it just pops out so cool and smooth, i dunno. did you see the way his right hand opns out at that time? its just for an instant, i'm not sure what he does...
It's because Chris spews melody. Very unique and unusual player, Chris is. I mean that in a good way of course. He has a style all his own. He's my fav out of all the guitarists Megadeth has had.
Whenever I hear the name Chris Poland, I always think of him playing metal, but i always forget that he's really a jazz guitarist.
Mustaine's genius was that he realised it was easier to teach an accomplished jazz guitarist metal, than it was too teach a metaller how to be good on the guitar.
dude is not a jazz guitarist lololololol
And he totally kicked as in megadeth. I honestly think hes better than Marty.
Chris is very underrated. He has a great tone and his shapes and progressions are awesome. So unique and definitely not rehashed.
Racer X could not agree more.
Sooooo unique. Never heard anyone else like him
I think the key to Poland is that his unique sound is also celestially beautiful
problem w great guitar players is they need a great song to be known. people that know megadeth know chris. i wuldnt say hes underated, he jus never got in the spotlight again after 2 albums w megadeth
Not so underrated as many musicians love his style
He plays so smoothly that sometimes it sounds like a sax.
Chris Poland is awesome.
This guy is the smoothest lead player ever.
What I love about CHris's playing is that he doesn't sound like every shredder out there. I hear a little John Mclaughlin in his style. And no tapping which is a breath of fresh air. He is more an extension of s 70's player, with a lot more chops.

Mclaughlan or di meola would have way more chops than chris. He is my favourite but he is limited in that regard.
@@andym28 bull
@@andym28 Yeah idk bout that dude, I love all three though.

He always had my favorite lead tone out of all the megadeth guitarists.
100%
Met him at a guitar clinic once. Very nice guy and has a zero ego.
Smooth is the word fantastic player
His vibrato is so good its impossible to replicate that
He's such a class guitarist! I would love to learn his phrasing.
...and _that_ is true musicianship!

LMAO I KNOW. I adored the second "uninteresting" phrase too. It's super simple, and I play guitar, yet hearing it still holds no less interest. It's awesome
That’s exactly what I was thinking loll
yeah, he plays the generic "uninteresting" phrase so well it still sounds great despite itself, heh
Chris Poland = One of the most underrated guitarists ever. So fuckin good he doesn't HAVE to do metal. He did metal and even if he didn't, he never had to if he didn't want to. That's how great and effortless this guy can play.
what an awesome concept, the whole question and answer. taking ti to another level he makes it seem so simple. amazing
Incredible tone and technique. His phrasings and building of textures for his leads are SIMPLY PHENOMENAL!!!! This is the style of playing I could listen to for hours. Mindless rambling...none here.

We need more videos of Poland. Dude is amazing . Love his Jan hammer influenced playing .
i cant believe this guy made peace sells
Love his style.
sweet and beautiful tone
wow i've always loved his tone
great tone and playing, a legend!
So humble and wise. My hero.
Incredible tone and feel with impeccable vibrato. Poland is just amazingly musical with his playing.
I love Chris’s playing!
One of the greats!
Chris is amazing, what a unique sound
What a gorgeous vibrato!
Ever since I got the vinyl Return to Metalopolis back in '92, he's been a particular favourite of mine - absolutely one of the most underrated players of all time....and in fact one of the most original in rock.
i was about to say hahaha! he makes even simple pentatonic scales sound freakin sick!!!
Beautiful sound😢😢

Chris Poland is a beast!
Anyone else hear steve vai and eric johnson in his playing?
AsTheSeasonsGray Eric Johnson yeah.
AsTheSeasonsGray i appreciate your username 👍
Not sure about Eric. Each to their own

i like this fact
Yeah i know man, he is having the same tone after all these years! Not so dominant on Killing is my business, but peace sells definately!
@JamesKendric Chris Poland is a guitar player's guitarist. Beautiful phrasing.

You can see him kinda tap his whammy bar when the note hits. He could just be hammering it but idk
he is so fucking musical. Love it

This seems really cool. Very awesome approach. And here he kind of reminds me of Devin Townsend in terms of appearance : p
@destihado1

One of my favourite guitar players. He's getting way too little attention. More people should see his talent.
@destihado1 It's mostly in the fingers I reckon...

Yeah i think it is something like that. Good ears.
Poland is a guitar god!!!
wow
It's borderline criminal how under-famed Chris Poland and OHM are.
he's better than any other
holy shit
@goldenchopsticks Him and Paul have their lives set up PRETTY damn well there
What he plays at :50 sounds pretty kool, even though he says that the play/respond style of the group is more interesting.
yeah maybe a hammer on but somehow it just pops out so cool and smooth, i dunno. did you see the way his right hand opns out at that time? its just for an instant, i'm not sure what he does...
phenomenal vibrato technique without touching the whammy bar
What he said at .52-.58 would be good advice for Eric Clapton , Slash, and a few 1000 more guitar players.
It's because Chris spews melody. Very unique and unusual player, Chris is. I mean that in a good way of course. He has a style all his own. He's my fav out of all the guitarists Megadeth has had.
Chris Poland has deffenately matured,,not only as a gutiarist,,but also as a person,,LOOK AT HIM!!!
awesome. its like hes saying pretty much just to hav a conversation, which could build up to a frantic argument (for lack of better term :-s)
0:53 Whats wrong with that Chris? you make it sound so amazing anyways!!
@ConorSomerz first of all metallica held auditions for the slot and many guys tried out but they decided on kirk. they didnt HAVE to get him
The solos on Kill Em All were Kirks. He only kept the first 3 or 4 bars of Dave's, then made the rest his own.
