- Today at FirstBuild, bladesmith Collin Sage is making a WWII Cossack Shashka Saber.
Collin uses the San-Mai forging technique to sandwich his core 80CrV2 steel between two layers of Damascus, then finishes off the sword with a brass bolster and wooden handle.

Nice work. I like that you're not above pointing out that you made a mistake and then telling us the steps you took to fix it. I'm impressed sir.
Cool! This video is about how modern technology brings ancient weapons back to life. This is really cool! If I were an American, I would say WOW! :)
Looks fantastic. I like how you've improved upon a great design by giving it another shot.
As I remember, to you the Russian Shashka using Damascus is one you defeated David Baker in Forged in Fire TV series, right?
That damascus pattern you did is badass!! It's my new favorite pattern now. Ty for sharing!

Forging looks amazing dude
Looks awesome!!! Thx lot of good tips on blade making!
That came out great!
Good job on the sword outstanding
Collin u r awesomeeee!!! I saw you winning the championship in Forget In Fire!!! Was Epic!!!
I literally watched that episode yesterday!, beating nine other than Bob Baker!

Amazing !!!!!
Awesome bro
Man i would love to see Doug kealing with that master piece🔥👍
Bravo 👍
After your win in FoF, i'm a new subscriber!!!
How much would it cost to produce this sword at around 1lb and a few ounces
Fun fact, only 1/3 of the shasha/шашка was sharpened.
👍👍
Is that weapon from forged in fire that you win And where are the places do you live at, to forge?
Hope you know that the blade's tip angle varies from handle side all the way to the top, so called "lense sharping", so the closer to the edge, the sharper blade you have.
👍
What smithing level is required for this build?
Advanced
you just need to take the tang to a gray color to soften it up enough to tap it.
Who came here from Forged in Fire?
Me.
Me
I like the original better, the one Collin did on the superchamp episode!.. hugs
what would you use the excess piece of steel for?
Smaller projects down the line. Fittings, etc.
Hi forged and fire champ, please make Zulfikar sword.
Can you make a two handle shaskha? ??
@@omurvefa1710 The Katana too, is a cavalry sabre,XD
Do you reckon Colin would be able to ship to the UK?
I have done it before.
Hot diggity! We have some pretty stupid laws re knifes but I’ll get in touch
Definately couldn't get away with sending a sword but "cutlery" is usually fine.
Isn't it the one in the forged in fire super champianship?
Sure is.
💖💖💖
what type of liquid were you using to quench it?
In this shop we just use coconut oil. Admittedly not the best oil you can use. An oil made for quenching like parks 50 would be better but it works just fine and I haven't had a failed quench yet. And it's non toxic and smells like cooking
@@collinsage2512 honestly I've always just reused old vegetable oil
Bro what's that strange dust thet you put on the metal after heating it up??
What is used for??
It’s called “flux”. Can’t forge welded layers without it.
@@2005batman you can you could use Water down clay or use none at all
Borax , sand or metal shavings , to keep oxygen out of the weld area if not boom , weld comes apart
shudders: hot foot melt skin down pain in the foot dance did that last year not fun had to pick out the scale from my foot.
What is the price of this ?
i want to improve. i click like
What size wheel did you grind the fullers with ?
1"
You need a small wheel to grind the fullers
Do you sell these, if so how much are they?
Well right now I just have the one made which I will put up for sale on my website soon. As far as the other projects on our series, they are all sold except for the katana.
Hey, guy's make plz gross messer)
Ultraman suit ver 7.3 saber
Nice one, bro... Good effort going out there, huh?
How's your day? Stay safe!
Greetings from the Philippines!
P.S.: Why don't you try forging a traditional Keris (Kris) blade, one of the most historical self-defense weapons of our Muslim brothers in southern Philippines (the Mindanao region)?
Acho que já te vi na tv ..
Don't shashkas, like most European swords, have welded soft tangs?
Russian or circassian(adighe) shashka?
can you order a shashky
Good effort, alas, you have not made the pommel properly. The top has a groove and the pommel is NOT screwed into tang. It is slid on and a metal round nut screws into the pommel and sits flush with the groove. The handle is too fat. Shaska is about agility, NOT power or heft.
OK👍
Does not Shashka originate from Circassians?
The cut did not work as it is not a bat and a shashak to be able to!
The dip in the sword is a really nice touch but handle is rough needs more wood and less brass and it needs more details in the eagle like carved beak, wings... something like that.... I’m not expert but your swords would look more insane
For sure I agree! This project was a replica of my forged in fire sword and I tried to stay true to the original which didn't have any embellishments because of lack of time. Hopefully the next big sword build will be more elaborate
H O T dance
This is not a checker.
Wern't you on forged in fire
A couple times, yes
@FirstBuild that's really cool both shaskas you built are awesome congrats on being the super champion 🏆
Nice from many aspects but not perfect elaboration of form and it's seems too heavy.
It's shashka, it's thin, light and sharp made for fast using. You could make better use of the benefits of Damascus steel in this. It' not heavy rider equipement. 3-6 cuts per second.
The draughts are not made according to the custom of the Caucasus. Amateur Strike)
Shashka is not Russian, it is Circassian & must be about 300 gram max. 500 gram
Handle is too heavy - irl brass parts were made hollow. But still looks like a nice blade
65 HC ?? ok
nice try
There is no Russian draughts, there is only Circassian draughts.
I always thought that Russia stole Shashka design from Turks. Shashka is original design from Iran, Syria, Turks.
.the balance point on this sword looks like terrible...
not like the original one 😏😏 you need to learn how Caucasian make it 💙
It's not shashka
That Weapon isn't Rusian saber is it Polish-Lithuanian cosac saber
@@omurvefa1710 sory i didn't now but from this what i know comonwhelat after first war witch ottomans they gave free some Slaves from region of your country maybe couse that this Weapon get in this region so popularity
Is this USA flag desecration on your wall?
just forge it instead of cutting it.
Actually its not Russian at all, Shashka was Circassian weapon. Stolen and appropriated by the cossacks that were resettled to those lands.
@Churchilltler No its not. Katana was influenced by Chinese Tang Dynasty Jian, but it was still quite different. Russian cossacks on the other hand, use purely Circassian swords, there are no modifications at all.
@Churchilltler You make me laugh. Thanks for the lovely weekend :)
P.S. Tang Dynasty Jian.
Shashka is a stolen weapon. Even russian cossack clothes come from Georgians and Circassians.
You have lots of machinery but you didn't make a perfect sword ☹️
too thick
This w not Russian this is Caucasian sword
Shashka is not Russian but Circassian in origin. From Circassian word "saesh`hwa" ("big knife"). It is not Russian at all. There is traditional process of shashka forging and classical parameters of look, length and weight. So: 1) shashka is not Russian; 2) something you forged is not shashka but a parody to it - like a plastic Christmas tree. Sorry.
Only shashka is not russian
Please take off that NWO slavemask.
Last minute,Not sharp enough...i think.
