  • Today at FirstBuild, bladesmith Collin Sage is making a WWII Cossack Shashka Saber.
Collin uses the San-Mai forging technique to sandwich his core 80CrV2 steel between two layers of Damascus, then finishes off the sword with a brass bolster and wooden handle.

Good effort, alas, you have not made the pommel properly. The top has a groove and the pommel is NOT screwed into tang. It is slid on and a metal round nut screws into the pommel and sits flush with the groove. The handle is too fat. Shaska is about agility, NOT power or heft.

It's shashka, it's thin, light and sharp made for fast using. You could make better use of the benefits of Damascus steel in this. It' not heavy rider equipement. 3-6 cuts per second.

There is traditional process of shashka forging and classical parameters of look, length and weight. So: 1) shashka is not Russian; 2) something you forged is not shashka but a parody to it - like a plastic Christmas tree. Sorry.
