  • I wanted to quickly improve the appearance of the aluminum wheels on my truck, a 2003 GMC Sonoma. The wheels were very ugly, with severe pitting and peeling clear coat. The proper way to do this job would have required removal of each wheel, cleaning, careful sanding with increasingly finer grit sand papers, chemical clear coat/paint stripping, polishing, and application of new clear coat or primer/paint. Such a task would have taken hours per wheel. Given the old age and low value of the vehicle, such a time investment was not worth it. I tried a quick solution instead. Using an angle grinder with a flap wheel, I removed pitting and the old clear coat. Finally, I finished the job with a new coat. Results were surprisingly great! The hour investment for all four wheels was worth it. The semi-restored wheels certainly improved the look of my truck.

While my heart disagrees.. for the time and money invested it's a worth while method. Well done!

I would take the wheel off the vehicle and not over spray the brake rotors with clearcoat
