    Those rims look clear coated with scratches, that’s why they’re still shiny except where the scratches are. That stuff is miraculous for a wheel with intact clear coating, as it removes brake dust & grease effortlessly! With bare aluminum, it gets the heavy dirt & oxidation off, but they then need to be polished with Mother’s aluminum polish for a bright shiny finish. If you know or suspect that your clear coat is chipped or scratched, you may cause additional oxidation to the underlying aluminum, resulting in additional clear coat cracking and chipping. In all cases, be sure to rinse the wheels off THOROUGHLY! Otherwise, you’ll damage the finish further.

    FYI... you need to cut one side of a milk carton out. Use the side of milk carton on the inside over you lugs. Steal and aluminum don’t need to touch for long periods of time. Notice on the inside of your wheels where the lug holes are. That’s hard to get off. Plus the reaction between the two different metals can weld there self together. I drove a 18 wheeler for thirty years. I’ve seen where shops had to use beet the rim off with sledge hammers and ruin the wheel. Use the inside of the wheel to size the plastic and mark you bolt patterns. Then cut out the lugs holes. Then then the circumstance off the round part that touches the brake drum. It she’ll stop the corrosion.

    • @HeBeGB501
      @HeBeGB501  Před 3 lety

      @@HeBeGB501 a milk jug is so thin you never notice that happening. In fact big trucks ( 18 wheelers will use them when using steel wheel butting up to aluminum. And , the types of plastic protecting disco are probably four times thicker. Just saying. Nothing to be concerned about as far as thickness of a plastic milk jug. I’ve seen shops take a sledge hammer and beat them off after they’ve been installed a half a million miles or longer. Just a fast and easy way to keep that corrosion away.

      @@galehess6676 We always wash the items with hot water and Dawn dishwashing liquid, rinse it and go ahead and apply whichever product you're going to use be it iron out or lime away.
      We just scrub the product in good with a stiff brush or a clean wash rag depending on how dirty the item is of course. We actually use a toilet bowl brush for our vintage aluminum and magnesium slot rims as well as our Fentons. Let it sit on the item for 5 minutes or so then rinse it off with either a power sprayer or a hose with one of those streamline heads on it.
      Do not do this process in direct sunlight on a screaming hot day because it speeds up the process way too quickly, but letting the rims or whatever item it is dry in the Sun before applying your chosen product actually is a benefit because it heats up the surface and help break down any leftover grease or grime, just don't do the complete process in direct sunlight unless of course it's on a cooler day.
      I'm not going to say this is going to work for everybody, but we've never had a problem with it and the results have always been great!

If u get that u will have to polish them out to remove the streaks. But to avoid that happening just wet down your rim or etc with water first then spray your acid. And be careful not to get that on your hands to cause that wheel acid burns skin. It is not fun either. If u want to save acid u can always 50 50 it to so it’s not to strong. Also you can buy a cleaner at the welding supply shop for aluminum. If the clear coat is flaking off hit it with paint remover 1st then rinse then aluminum cleaner. It will leave a bright finish but not shinny unless you want to polish them after cleaning. I had a set if deep dish slotted wheels a would just clean with the acid (phosphoric acid I think) I really liked the finish without the shine.
    I just was turned on to Klean Strip concrete and metal etch. Cut with water and spray with a pump sprayer. You might want to practice on some junk wheels before you do your good ones, this will also stain your driveway.

    • @400ss
      @400ss Před 3 lety +1

      Alloy doesn’t really mean anything on its own since it means a metal that’s a mix of different components. Could be steel alloy or aluminum alloy but most people call aluminum wheels “alloys”. Chrome is a plating so it can be applied to any wheel (steel or aluminum), more common on cheaper cast aluminum wheels though.

    I use this product. It will certainly clean your aluminum wheels. HOWEVER, if your aluminum wheels shine like chrome, you will lose that shine forever. The acids in the chemical clean the aluminum wheel but it also causes the surface to become porous and unable to shine. It's says right on the label...not for polished aluminum. Just a heads up. Good luck.

      @@borp6912 Clearcoat is usually a form of paint or powdercoat. ( This one is easy) Pitch a wheel in the trunk, lug it to a (PRO) paint store like Sherwin Williams/ or PPG dealer or Napa/Martin Senour. Take it inside, ask the tech to use a solvent on the wheel to test which will dissolve the clearcoat. Usually it is the same as mild paint stripper. But a pro can help you nail the right one down the "1st" time.
      (Option 2) Also you can soda blast it with bicarbonate blasting media, which doesn't harm the wheel either.
