Just caught this today; incredible performance and it's cranked up to 11 on my home audio system. Good lord. LOVE THIS and all of PMG material since the days with Gary Burton. Also loved the interviews with Richard Bona and Antonio Sanchez.
Varias Maravillosas Personas!
Thanks Pat Metheny, I saw him with his tremendous Band, here, in Caracas and New York city,,, God bless them all
As somebody already stated this song is not from Speaking of Now. That album is now gone to a charity shop! I would have kept it if this was on it! Saw him live last summer and so great to take my wife along too. Just wish he would change his old striped shirt for something else!
oo,i see. hehe, sorry for my acknowledgement my friend, just particuraly i'm interesttin with pat. THX, warm greeting from Indonesia. @Rodrigo and *****
Does Lyle Mayes have a midi pedal hooked up to the Stienway? How else is he getting those syncopated hits to accompany his probably largly improvised solo around @2:40? Its not coming from Coung Vu! Thanks for the upload. Hope it lasts.
I got this from the info in other video: "Lyle Mays - Steinway & Sons MIDI Grand Piano".....They all are wonderful..Love PMG and each musician they are involved with....
Sergius Cerapium Thank you for sharing that info, Sergius. I agree that one of Pat's many talents is his ability to select and surround himself with fantastic musicians who add their own personalities to the music. This song is a classic example; this version is quite different than what was released on Travels. The music expands with each singular change in the line up. This particular band, with both Steve Rodby and Richard Bona, is amazing to me as a (strictly amateur) bass player. It is rare to find even one amazing bass player in a band much less two highly unique yet equally genius styles that are so particular yet strikingly complimentary. Thanks you for your thoughts!! Peace to you, my friend.
+John G. Hill I met Lyle Mays in Dallas, Texas in 2002 and asked him afterwards how. That piano, while an acoustic, also has MIDI capabilities and when he played harder (using velocity) the horns would pop out. There was a sound module MIDI'd up to the piano that was on a horn patch. When it came to all of the parts where different pedals were needed, he also said, and I quote, "It's not easy but that's what I get for writing all the god damned parts. Then I have to play them live." I then met Pat Metheny for about two minutes so he could sign my shirt and ticket. He said, "Thanks for listening". Really cool.
+ThatOneDude88 Good story, so I'll give you one. The only time I ever paid a scalper for tickets was to see "Secret Story." For some reason Lyle was not on that tour. Sat in the 2nd row at the Pantages in Hollywood. I think Pat's girlfriend (at the time?) and her family were there, because they seemed to be very focused on Pat. They were almost in front of me, but a little to the right of them, and directly in front of me, was some guy that was jacked up. His friends didn't seem to be happy with him either. He just kept moving around. unfocused, and I thought, there goes the concert. So on the first number, he's moving around so much, the band is starting to notice, because this guy was in the front row. I thought Paul Wertico was going to come out from behind his kit and punch the guy. So just when I thought all hope was lost for this being a great experience, the asshole brings out a cigarette and lights up. In like two seconds flat, security comes over and removes the guy, and we never saw him again for the whole concert! He must have been REALLY messed up. I don't think his friends missed him at all.
The absolute freedom and musicality of this band is unreal. All make their playing effortlessly perfect. Awesome
Lyle Mays, what a loss... but the life of so many has been enriched by his art.
+Richard Bonna
Cuong Vu nails his solo out of the park here 🎺
a classic performance. I am so glad I caught this tour live in Detroit, Mich.
WOW! This is one of my favorite Pat Metheny tunes anyway, but this performance is NUTS. Every solo surprised me. Amazing. What a group.
Beeing on stage with pat metheny group = best job in the world.
You just have to be a slightly decent musician ;)
nah... not such a big deal.. I can do that! Hold my beer.
Choose your instrument while I hold your beer... and I get my popcorn ready :D
VERY exclusive group of musicians.
Wouldn't be a job. It would be Heaven......just sayin'.
Still in Heaven seeing/hearing this.
Best Antonio Sanchez solo I've seen!
UNBELIEVABLE GOOD!!!
my favorite version...
Antonio Sanchez is a beast on the drums , I remember when he replaced Paul Wertico , I thought it would be a bit of a letdown; Boy was I wrong 😑 😂
リチャード・ボナが参加していた時のPMG は最強‼️🤣🤣🤣
NHKホールでのライブ

Is this from a DVD?
Cast?
Le trompettiste semble habité
How is Lyle doing that??!!! He turns the piano with the same keys into an organ, even changing from note to note. A foot pedal? Kind of astonishing.
