PAT ......Surely the greatest musician ever!!?? Anyone agree? Still bringing joy to my heart! Love him!
Truth in my world...with Lyle too.....what a duo....
Why do people always have to choose someone to be the absolute greatest?
If a person can not accept the known God, he creates and chooses his own substitute god ... according to his taste, according to his ideas.
Pat is a very good musician and, above all, he had the luck of a great career ... also because of his willpower and extroversion.
Bill Evans, Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Johann Sebastian Bach, Ludwig van Beethoven, Hermeto Pascoal ... are highest level.
Pat is The G.O.A.T. but you have to give his band credit. Theys guys are all awesome.
@@1234swingit completely agree. Sadly the “greatest of all time” seems to have become a common talking point in all fields.
I agree 👍
RIP Lyle, one of the greatest musicians to ever grace this earth. Thank you for sharing your genius with us.
LM was not from Earth 100% that is why he has left us .
Grande musicista Lyle❤️
Lyle May's was a phenomenal artist composer & musician 😇
@@fredfungalspore Well put!
@@fredfungalspore I want to be an alien like that. I really do.
RIP Lyle Mays. Heartbroken. PMG forever.
I am still weeping over the death of this wonderful musician....RIP dear Lyle !
Amen, Deborah. He remains an extraordinary artist and en exceptional talent with gifts beyond measure. Makes me wish I had studied piano more studiously as a teenager. So gifted and at the same time so dedicated to being as good as he could be. His spirit will live on in his contribution to music.
Just resting for a time.
Look up Michele Frischietti and Third Wind. Lyle's daughter! (Amazing cover and video)
This should have 100 million views. Out of this world.
Coung Vu was a beast on that trumpet solo! Amazing performance!
Check out Cuong Vu trio with pat metheny if you havent already
Richard Bona's solo is out of this world
After hearing this dozens of times... I just heard that Monk quote he made in his solo for the first time.
@@thehouseofnanking which monk tune he quotes, and in which moment??
@@beno.- rhythm-a-ning at like 5:48
@@charlieparker8065 'Never got to listen to this composition but heard 'the quote' first time.
Wasn't sure of who but remember there was like a hard four bar #9 rhythm pattern on the original tune.
But yeah, the bass solo feels like it progresses to an outer body and soul experience. Also, George Benson and his influences preceding him.
To me, Pat finding Lyle was an intentional destiny.
I know we all miss Lyle Mays being here with us!***
Methany by himself a virtuoso but w Lyle…Total Magic
I just realized how mesmerizing Antonio Sanchez's drum solo is. Amazingly accurate. Simply stunning!
As a musician, i couldn't reallly appreciate his solos fully listening to this growing up (except on a superficial level), but now in my mid 30's i can hear and recognize all the different subdivisions, and you're right, it's amazingly accurate. The coolest thing of all is he's holding the straight 4 count on cowbell the whole time, and everything is in perfect sync.
Agreed. He was over my head in past. Biy I knew pat heard genius and I would get it one day.
Tell me about it! I fancy myself as being a drummer, but when I witness the krayzee level of mastery that Mr. Sanchez exhibits...Smh! 😮 Dare I say, listening to Antonio out there in the stratosphere somewhere makes me think that I could be on Wertico's level! 😂
Obviously Lyle will be one of the cats that keeps taking us to the edge of the universe! Bon voyage timeless keys!
ya nice! i like that..
@@rogerm2420I'm sure glad Lyle did a bunch of recordings!
Gonna be looking you up in the next life Lyle you genius!
Can't believe Lyle Mays has passed on. His music has taken my soul and spirit to places I could have never imagined.
2023, and I miss Lyle more than any musician or entertainer who has come and gone in my lifetime. Yes, I miss Freddie, MJ, Bowie, Prince, and Whitney, but no one else's music plays in the background in my head on the daily. No one else's music made me reach deep and do deep reading of old interviews and personal background, find their influences and give that music a listen. Lyle must truly have been from another dimension.
I think he may have been born of the gods,Seriously!
Lyle Mays and Pat Metheny were a match made in musical paradise.
I listen to pat every day my daughter and 8 yr old grandaughter love his music 🎶 too
Richard bona is a force of nature! What a musician...
Lyle, you were such a brilliant, deep, inspired and ispiring artist and such a sweet and down-to-earth human being, we miss you so sadly and so dearly...💖
5 exceptionally brilliant solos, each a completely unique approach. Lyle’s full of harmonic twists, Cuong Vu creamy boppiness, Bona joyous personal expression, Sanchez superhuman pulse and rhythmic strength, and then my favourite Pat solo on CZcams - pure melodic impulse, ripping through the tune. When he pushes the gr300 up an octave I get chills.
Chills, shivers and everything beyond! this music is from heaven let it take you man ....euphoria!!!
That man said 'creamy'! So true!
the contrabassist didn't get a solo :c
If I was King, I'd get people to call me 'His Creamy Boppiness' instead of His Royal Highness
Don't forget Rodby with that wonderfully swinging Bassline
A stage full of geniuses.
Steven Reichert That sums it up perfectly
REAL professional musicians!!
That is exactly what I thought. Everyone on that stage is and can be a stand alone performer. In collaboration, it is magic!
But also, musicians who would still do it with as much joy and passion even if it wasn't a profession. Personally, I feel like Metheny is taking dictation from the spirit realm or something.
You have a keen eye.
I heard Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays since I was 6. I remember my mum when she told me that pat's music is ever green. It's true, I'm 19 now and I listen pat metheny every day for 13 years.
Noemi Zaffanella that’s awesome!!!!!!! 🙏🏻✌🏻🙋🏻♂️
Noemi Zafanella....And here I am at the ripe kick ass age of 68 years old! And Still listening to the masters of beautiful music! Keep listening my friend...for the journey of this music gets much much better!! And Good for you that your mum had the foresight to enlighten you to Pat Metheny's music!
I wish I was so blessed.
@@tedhernandez2394 So true !
Keep your mother.. lol
am i the only one who can not stop listening to this piece of art? excelent for the night it is magical
i think there is at least 36 of us
..37.🤙🏽
No you're not. This is one of my favorite.
Lets not forget Mr. Steve Rodby this guy sure keeps a smooth steady pulse love his groove PMG pls get back together ...plssss
Anyone whose ever played a musical instrument knows this is Top Tier Jazz
I wish THIS piece was on Voyager... Some time, millions or billions of years in the future, aliens would know humanity had at least one thing right!
Who are the 149 people who gave this a thumbs down?? They obviously didn’t know what they were getting themselves into listening to this. This is pure magic.
Melissa Harrison . They are called cretins .
Those 149 who gave it thumbs down are probably Justin Bieber fans or hip hop crap fans this is real music pat metheney is a great musician have liked his music since the mid 70,s producing bright life lp he’s very underated
They are the Unfortunates who just exist to exist, missing out on excellence in life.
Possibly Swifties looking for banalities?
LoL
Nothing less than a national treasure.
The audience got lucky with this!
I would say that Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays were jazz innovators the likes of which may never be seen again. This song is a perfect example. This is a song of bursting joy framed in complex jazz idioms with a straight ahead tempo. Who else is playing or ever played jazz like this?
They can't, it's a gift to behold
I got to see the original travels/Bilbao tour.
18th bd more or less.
It was all pure fire and water and air.
Agreed. They were a once in a lifetime team. The Lennon and McCartney of jazz.
Wow, this just took my breath away, all these years later, been a fan all my life until the day I die, words unspoken, salute to all, pass and present. So much love indeed, Pat's always been my favorite then you add Lyle, Bona and the cast, it's like a wonderful wonderland that I've enjoyed, Peace to all 🎸🎹🥁🎺☝🏾
Antonia Sanchez is my favorite drummer. I love him paired up with Metheny. Sanchez has a degree in classical piano, among other degrees, and is on the faculty at New York University. His 3rd solo album (New Life) is due out in 2013. Viva Sanchez and Viva Mexico!
So thankful my kids grew up listening to music like this. Thanks.
I was 17 years old when a friend handed me " the White Album "... A huge fan ever since.. CZcams is such an amazing resource for music. I have expanded my Metheny/Mays knowledge 20-fold !
Wow, blown away!
Long time Matheny and Mays fan, but something magic happened this time lol
I got it... it "grabbed" me, and I realized just how amazingly good this performance is!
Each artist is tapped in and play as if they're in each other's heads... seamlessly.
Music this good is on a whole different level- it really is art.
The synthesizer effect on guitar- classic Pat Matheny! The chorus doubled by the trumpet, and voice layer of Bona.. back to Wow!
The keyboard solo going from piano to synth magically in the middle of chords.
How about the band cues on the drum solo- another level! Tight, but loose... loosely tight.
The George Benson-like scatting on bass!
Great use of volume dynamics. Is that the artists, soundman, or both?
A big shout out to the camera man also, who obviously knows the music. That makes or breaks a video. Excellent job!
Jazz fusion is not enough to describe music this intelligent, and entertainingly good!?
Thank you for posting.
Thank you Pat Matheny Group for all the wonderful, artistic music over the years.
Like many- I'm sure, this is the music I hum throughout the day... the soundtrack of our lives 🎶🙏
You're so correct, on everything, makes you wonder if Benson actually saw this and his reaction at the time, you took all the words out my mouth. Blessings to the family
Awesome! What else to say The Pat Metheny Group! RIP Lyle Mays🤲
Such an awesome rendition of this song. Everyone did terrific, and I'm appreciative of what Pat Metheny has bought to the world.
Robert Harris well said
Beautiful ❤ seen Pat live 7 or 8 times … met him once … his 1st album at 17 yrs old … 20 Grammys… GOAT ❤❤❤❤
Zackly. 1st disc with Jaco 🤯🌅🙏
I've seen him live more than any other artist (over 20 times). I gotta ask, what was he like when
you met him?
I first heard Pat with Gary Burton in the mid 70's. I've seen him countless times in all types of settings. He is consistently brilliant. My favorite is with PMG. There was something special about that band. Lyle was a BIG part of that. RIP Lyle.
Truth....
Still so sad. Watching Lyle playing here I just can't help feel something was taken from me. His virtuosity, how he fit in perfectly with PMG. I know in last 5 yrs. he was tired of touring and disillusioned with the music biz and pivoted to programming & management. I was hoping someone could've coaxed him to perform again. RIP..
What an egregious affront it must be that others don't live just to gratify you. How dare they do what they choose to... /s
Maybe because of his health, we'll never know, I also heard par lay that they weren't on the best of terms in the end, all speculation no confirmation
Sadly,i think this was the last hurrah (Live DVDwise)of PMG. Musicians within the ranks have come and gone, but there has NEVER been a Group album without Lyle Mays. Once he took ill, there was no more output, and now that he's transitioned......there was never to my knowledge any statement saying the Group is over, but to me,without Lyle i dont think Pat woukd do it. But man what a legacy!! And Bona's bass solo is just amazing
One of the best jazz group in the world! This are all extra ordinary people !
Pats so increable and the pianoiest was breath taken the bassist was excellent great band the best i have seen ❤❤❤
Holly cow again…. 2 yrs later. Isn’t anyone listening to this great magic?
This song is from Offramp, 1982. It was a 20 year old classic when this tour happened. Cuong Vu was 13 when it came out. It sounds good here, and still sounds good today. Truly timeless music.
Truth...
Was it from offramp but never included on the studio album? I don't see it as a track on there
I stand corrected. It was not from Offramp, rather it appeared on Teavels, which was the Offramp tour. Same era, though.
No, it's from Travels
This is the first time I've heard this...
My mind is blown.
+00xanawolf00 yeah and I still don't know where my mind is
Same here... mindblown.
Vidio barrywhite
Blown to that place where nothing can harm your head .
Mindblown still 17 years later. Meth is a hellova drug.
Hold on a moment while I feebly attempt to reconstruct my melted face
Richard Bona, The George benson of the bass guitar!!🌈4:54
That song is great and this version is amazing!
They say only quality lasts. If so, this music will last forever. In 1979 I bought the "White Album". Been blown away ever since. When Lyle passed in February, felt like a little part of me died. I consider Pat and Lyle one of the greatest composing teams in American history.
Truth and more.....greatest composing teams in the universe......
You will Never See Music like this ever again.....
Amazing performance, what a solo ed effect Lyle Mays!
Bona's solo is a piece of magic...the calls to old jazz pieces are fantastic
Jean Pierre, from Miles is crazy!
especially Monk's rhythm a ning
#DOPEMagic OMG!!!!!
I really like the lick from rhythm a ning
Jaco 2.0
Imagine yourself standing on the edge of a vast untouched meadow, the sun beaming down, mild breeze, breathtaking green and blue hues. and you just ride off on a horse with no agenda except to take in every moment of an unanticipated paradise granted you by a curiosity to see what was off the beaten path. It's like "DAME" this is a rare gift that I've given myself. Every glance and every view of the countryside is a celebration of discovering simply what's under a sun that sheds a thousand hues of light on the basics. I mean bass player goes OFF the control chart if there ever was such a thing. Drive everyone into amazement. The drummer kicks ass. Flam paradiddles are not easy strokes on one tube muchless three or four. As JZ says in response to one of his own drummer's solos "that shit ain't easy". The whole of paradise of the country landscape that Bilboa creates is untouchable. And then Pat goes wild as Richard sings through an interpretation that no one will every forget. One helluva excursion off the beaten path in the meadow untouched
Imagining ....wow thanks Jim!
Paradise!
Pat Metheny Group.... what can I say!!!! I've been a fan for years, and thank God had a chance to see him playing with the quartet in my Puerto Rico while he was on tour!!! His music has definitely changed my life. If I feel sad or lonely, just tune to his great compositions(and of Lyle as well), and things change right away!!!
Pat becomes one with his guitar ...you gotta luv it! :)
Broke out laughing several times....crazy level of musicianship. Just amazing.
I don’t think “guitarist” first when I think of Pat Metheny. He is a musician first and a wizard at that, as he transcends his instrument completely. His improvisational ideas do not depend on the conveniences or the idiosyncrasies of the guitar. His improvisation is freedom. Whatever comes to mind he can play as if all he is using as an instrument are his brain, ears, heart and spirit. His sharing this with us is an uplifting gift.
Lyle’s acoustic piano solo mixed in and out with the synth stabs, bananas 🍌!
Heard trumpet sound, came to see if it was Pat soloing, but this time i was wrong. Great Cuong Vu. Beautiful!
Trumpet and Pat Matheny's synthesized guitar sound different. Trumpet is a live brass instrument, guitar is a picking instrument though passing through a trumpet voice.
LOL.... ME TOO!!!!
Станислав Вайкерт these days you have no idea “what’s playing what”
Buy a Roli and see what they are doing.... Pat could have EASILY been a Trumpet patch that has been created lately
AWESOME he still plays the Roland
Patch that he makes famous, HE USED TO BRING OUT AN UNBELIEVABLE “CHIME” SOUND “LIVE”..... as the ENTIRE AUDIENCE GASPED!!!
Pat has been an “Audio Inventor” since hooking up with Lexicon (TimeLine, Primetime, PCM 41, PCM 42) Synclavier, not to say the BRILLIANT MUSICIANS THAT SIT NEXT TO HIM!!
Been lucky enough to see the group live a few times in its various line ups over the years. Never fails to move me and this particular line up was amazing. Worth checking out Richard Bona's solo records which were also incredible.
Pat Metheny has a style all his own. Yes indeed! He's out there!
RIP Lyle May's. Truly great musician. RIP PMG. An amazing band that I had the privilege to see many times.
Omg...Lyle Mays passed...I did not know !!!! One of the best pianist of all times. May he rest in peace
pat metheny my favorite guitarist his genius reminds me that there is a wonderful and amazing Creator
Pat Metheny is a great genius!! As a self taught bassist, the first time i saw a video of him playing "have you heard" i was really astonished and i truly think that he is one the greats musicians whose music gave me the courage and boost to keep pushing. ✊
Same here...self taught. This and jazz in general is great to play along with.
A great teacher of Music has become its brightest student and biggest fan. We are lucky to have Pat.
the way Rodby looks up at Bona in disbelief after that solo was awesome: )
Why on earth would Rodby look at Bona in disbelief? Rodby is a much better soloist!
I hate having to justify a comment to half wits, but seeing as you asked...
Rodby looked up at Bona cause he just played a fucking killer solo and that's what musicians do, we celebrate each other's talents and victories.
Btw give me one link that shows Rodby to be the better soloist!
Lane arndt Amen to that.
Absolutely in shock and overwhelmed with a brilliant feeling of elation after watching that!! Oh my god that’s as good as it gets folks Phew!
JUST WOW and the BASS and DRUM SOLO's are so amazing, as is the whole group. Love Lyle in this as well, RIP, may you feel the love we all have for you...
No matter how many times I hear this, my favorite PMG tune. JUST CHILLS AND THRILLS! EVERY DAMN TIME!
Truth...
Music at its highest form.
this is the greatest music in the planet
6 month ago I felt in love with "the last train home 'and still I follow this group.....
you were right to do so ... you have tapped into the REAL music and real musicianship stay with it no matter what your loser friends say about it. I've been dealing with the mediocrity for decades. Stay with your heart!
Same... 14 years ago.
Excellent. The drummer was kicking it.
cat's name killin' it...Antonio Sanchez...
Hands down one of the tightest groups of musicians ever
Truth...
Sanchez is SIIIIIICK !
one of the Best Pat Metheny act of all times
Jazz has evolved pat metheny has taken it to another level gooooood music
Excellent! I was in the audience on this miracle performance at Tokyo. Wow!
Each musician was pushing all the others to the limit! That is an incredible performance!
I was so lucky for having seen the performance of this song LIVE two weeks ago. Special kudos to Pat and Antonio! Cheers from the Netherlands!
this is one of the most complex and at same time runny song of Pat. I just adore it!
I saw this show twice that year it was fantastic. Loving PMG since 1978.
I always come back to hear this performance to remind myself what real musicianship sounds like. RIP Lyle and thanks for leaving behind a legacy for others to follow.
One of the greatest piano players out there, incredible human being, Lyle Mays is by far one my favorite acoustic piano players. Kudos to Pat as always - none other than the greatest guitar player that ever lived so I won't say anything about Pat even though I just did. We need PMG back at least before this whole thing comes to a close! Oh, check out Richard on the bass, (Richard Bona) simply mesmerizing! Oh, and BTW, the drummer (Antonio Sanchez) is Latino and from Mexico, nice mix!
Any time I have seen Mr Metheny over the years be it solo, group or whatever it might be has been nothing but pure musical magic. Was lucky to meet him a few times to top it all off!!!!
Lyle Mays!! Genio!!
❤️
the talent and performance here is downright hysterical
You got THAT right! Great music is eclectic! It has a finger on the pulse of the nations, and has the ability to reach someone at any point on the globe on a deep and intimate level!
Richard Bona has proved that he is one of the greatest musicians of all time!
Pat Metheny at his best.listen to this everrrrrry morning on my way to work. They are great man great!!
Lyle Mays is the most avant garde, Bill Evanish, McCoy Tynerish swining pianist on the scene. He and Metheny are simpatico and his sound is absolutely refreshing, and he romances the sheer hell out of Metheny's trumpet sounding guitar riffs. Study Metheny, he played horn before the guitar and his whole sound is like a slow, long, blow when he's hooked up to the synclavier...simply divine. Yessss I am a fan!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You are soo correct! 💯
Wow that trumpet sounds amazing!! My favorite horn but usually an unruly instrument that takes years to tame! Great job!
So nice, and as a plus, with Metheny ensembles the live performances sound as good as studio cuts, something you can't count on in live pop music performances.
I saw this version of the PMG at the Landmark Theater in 2002. Excellent performance as they all are.
I was there too. Syracuse, NY. Excellent show!
great version!!!
Richard Bona's contribution is exceptional
the guitar jazz Master.From Portugal.
That's IT! Nothing more, nothing less...sheer perfection, Metheny perfection. He takes me to a place, in my mind's eye I am traveling thru strange towns, over the sea, in peaceful space, nothing matters with Metheny. I am in bliss with Metheny.
Soulful virtuosity!
Só ouvindo e vendo... perfeito! Inimaginável...😊😄❤👌🏽☝🏽👏🏽👏🏽 Todos são demais! Hour concour's
Richard Bona #BEAST
I am always amazed when I hear this. Never get tired of it. So uplifting....Thank YOU !!
Music Really Does Make The World Go Round..... i believe it slowed down yesterday...
One of the greatest live performances I've ever seen
all the solos are so fucking good in this version OMG I CANT EVEN BREATHE! ahhhh
