I’ve seen PMG in concert on several occasions. But oh my goodness, I wish I could have been in the audience to witness this magical performance. Outstanding!
How fantastic music it is! I was listening to many pieces of Pat and hear many musicians who played with him.But the drummer whose name is Paul Wertico is absolutely fantastic geyser of energy and talent.
@@millfred123 Danny was very skilled, but was more of a big band jazz or fusion style drummer. Paul brough a new sound that fitted or complemented Pat and Lyles Latin jazz approach very well.
Sencillamente, inolvidable.
Thank you very much for your input. I always wandered where did the title of this great song come from. Yours is a most interesting explanation on how and why the song was called like that. People from this most noble town of Bilbao should feel very proud and honoured to have an artist of such calibre as Pat Metheny as his most illustrious ambassador all over. By the way, you may have wrongly identified as musicians all those attending that memorable concert, but, one would assume that among those 200 souls in La Casilla that night there would be both musicians and also people from other backgrounds, just saying. Thank you again for sharing this priceless piece of information.
My classical pianist wife was asking me a similar question(we saw Pat on this tour before we were married). I said babe I do not know! She actually asked if he notates his music I said good question...
That was its working title for many years, according to the Pat Metheny Songbook. However, AFAIK it was never recorded under that title. It first appeared on the PMG album 'Travels', by the way.
no; he *played* them - his piano is linked via MIDI to synthesizers and samplers playing the "horn" parts, which he's fading in and out with a volume pedal. his name is lyle mays, by the way, one of the most harmonically sophisticated cats ever.

I have a cd of this complete show...it was shown on an italuan tv show....i still like the original version from travels...besides the facr that i was at the dallas show and could have been at the show it was recorded at..i think lyle and pats dolos were superb
Love Paul Wertico's explosive intro!
Pat and Lyle….Lyle and Pat…regardless of the many colleagues on keyboards over the years…it always seemed to me that Pat and Lyle were soulmates

Beautiful execution, with the great Lyle Mays !!!

No coincidence the group EXPLODED when Paul joined ... Danny was okay ... but that's about it ...
100% agree~!

Wertico was indispensable; he made the whole greater than the sum of the parts.
I love Pat's smile after Lyle's embellishment at 0:58 😂
Yeah that was some cheeky stuff! 😂
Fantastic sound, wunderbar Lyle and Paul w. And all the band, umbelivable tour. Grandi 👍👍👍
Lyle Mays outstanding solo! Pats always great..

So sad that 2 of them (at least that I’m aware of ) are departed 🙏🏽
LYLE MAYS & MARK LEDFORD - R.I.P. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
Great recording. Just saw Pat Metheny last night in Cleveland, Hts., Ohio. Fantastic performance.
Awesome solo by Lyle Mays! :)

Such a great composition. Thx for posting.
Such great song and sound! We just made a backing track for this amazing tune:)
This was a good one. 'Definitely an inspired performance by all.
The studio version blows this away (from the Travels album).
スタジオヴァージョンは存在しません!
この曲はライブ録音しかありませんよ‼︎😅
Impossible...I didn't just see this did I? Sheer perfection
Incredible! :-)
heaven must be missing angels.....

I saw them in Vitoria.in the late 80s I think. Freaking amazing!!!!

! Bilbao es lo nuestro !
Nunca pensé que Bilbao podría sonar tan fantasticamente funky...¡¡y puede!! ¡¡Que fuerza tiene Bilbao, y Pat, y la canción!!
Funky....ummm latino!
Lo dejamos en "sheer fussion"? Que te parece?
How is it that no one is reading any sheet music?? I’m in awe...

It’s called improvisation
@@jibsmokestack1that and they internalized their tunes to the point where they CANT mess it up due to the frequency in which they play these tunes
The form of the tune is not difficult; it’s in various fake books.
You can't improvise over a tune to your best ability if you haven't memorized and internalized it. That's why they've memorized them all.
From Bilbao-Spain R.I.P *LYLE MAYS*
I mean just WOW!
Pat e Lyle soberbos! The wondeful music
No drummer could ever shin Paul’s shoes!!!,!
Lyle mays on fire
its a Roland GR 300 Guitar synthesizer
@77shard
You're welcome.
Thank you for a comment.
very nice performance! what solo from Lyle and the guy from percussion!
Amd let’s not forget Nana Vasconcelos, Mark Ledford and of course “el maestro” Lyle Mays. May they rest in peace!!
Genius
I like the slightly slower tempo on this version.
Why can't I find this version to buy?
After the drum intro I was kind of expecting Judas Priest "Painkiller" LOL
Hey, this is the same lineup for Imaginary day tour!
In England when one says the word "pants" they are referring to undergarments and not overgarments such as trousers.
OMG! Who says jazz is boring?
amo este sonido del ¿piano midi?
je je... tenía que ser Bilbao!! ;-)
Is there any more from this show?
i watched a clip of 1 month ago and the only thing that changed on pat was his guitar - the shirt, jeans and hair is still the same...
'Jeff Haynes' on perc?!
Yes, in the whole Imaginary Day tour he was a member of the PMG.
@fendweller
Other one is Al Jarreau.
Does anyone know what guitarpedal Pat uses on his solo?
Why does a banner come up during Lyle Mays' solo saying "McCoy"???
That was its working title for many years, according to the Pat Metheny Songbook. However, AFAIK it was never recorded under that title. It first appeared on the PMG album 'Travels', by the way.
This tune was originally dedicated to pianist McCoy Tyner.
;-)
When pmg had it ?
Any idea what year?
Did the pianist memorize all those hits?
no; he *played* them - his piano is linked via MIDI to synthesizers and samplers playing the "horn" parts, which he's fading in and out with a volume pedal. his name is lyle mays, by the way, one of the most harmonically sophisticated cats ever.
Didn't understand the question at first but, yeah, what Peter said. Lyle be all MIDI'd up! My favorite keyboardist! :-)
Lyle is also a co-composer of this piece. He is an absolute monster in the world of jazz, studied with the late Bill Evans, and can do no wrong.
