2001 NBA Finals Game 3, June 10, 2001 | In a game that the Lakers felt like they needed to win, Kobe was even more motivated as this was the first game of the series in which he would play in his childhood home Philadelphia. After a somewhat slow start, Kobe caught fire in the second quarter by hitting 8 straight shots while silencing the hostile Philly crowd. Kobe didn't shoot well in the second half but came up with a huge leaner late in the game moments after Shaq fouled out. After an enormous corner three by Robert Horry, the Lakers would pull away with a 96-91 victory. Kobe finished with 32 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 assists.

@@Theterminato2013a few variables on Kobe playing "worse" vs sixers compared to spurs, the main reason was perimeter defense, the sixers had raja bell, an elite defender, whereas McDaniels was not at that level, plus mutombo down low is also 1 of the best shot blockers ever, some say the best. Then Kobe took a much larger defensive role in this series guarding the league MVP Allen Iverson, so he was expending alot of energy on the defensive end. Imagine chasing Iverson on defense and still scoring the buckets down the stretch for your team.

He was a sidekick. That's the actual series. He's a Pippen. Guards shooting 41% from the field don't win championships, they win condolences for their career like Iverson and Melo. But Shaq. A lot of guys play like Kobe. There was only one prime Shaq.

      Kobe- 24.6 PPG (41.5% shooting), 7.8 rebounds, 5.8 assists, 1.4 steals
There's a reason Shaq has 3 NBA Finals MVPs and Kobe has 2. Guards shooting 41% from the field and under 2 steals don't win championships unless they have one of the greatest rebounders in the game cleaning up their mess. Ask Iverson. Ask Melo. But for Shaq and Pau Gasol, Bryant is Iverson. And that ain't bad. But that ain't Jordan.

@@ko7577Kobe was also going against raja bell, an elite on ball defender, and going to the hole against mutombo, so while stats are cute, they aren't the whole story. Kobe also took the role of guarding the league MVP and trying to be as good on defense as offense. I know you guys don't understand that, because players today only play defense the last 6 minutes of a game, but chasing iverson on 1 end, and also being the closer on the other is something 99.9 percent of players in history wouldn't be able to do.

@@ko7577 And there's a reason why Kobe won 5 rings and Shaq 4. Shaq never won a ring without an HOF guard. The only time he faced a great center in finals, Hakeem schooled him despite having Penny alongside him. Kobe won a ring with Gasol against Garnett, Pierce, Allen 3 HOF players still in their prime + Rondo. Jordan never faced that much adversity in finals and had Pippen, Kukoc and Rodman for the second three peat. Kobe ain't MJ, he's Kobe.

    • @ko7577
      @ko7577 Před 28 dny

@@g.c.8349 2000 Finals stats and reality
Kobe Bryant - 15 PPG on 38% shooting
      Shaquille O'Neal - 38 PPG, 16.7 RPG, 2.7 BPG and 61% shooting
That's kind of like saying "Jordan never won without a hall of fame forward." And that in 2000, Bryant wasn't up to HOF guard standards. He was a 22 year-old kid, three years younger than Luka, and definitely not playing like a HOF guard in those finals. If you look at that 2000 finals, it took Ron Harper, Kobe Bryant, and Glen Rice's combined PPG total to equal one Shaquille O'Neal. Shaq also went to an NBA finals without a HOF guard in 1995 at age 23. Like James, wherever Shaq showed up, championship appearances and rings materialized where there were none before. The Magic went to a finals within 3 years of his arrival, the Lakers went to 4 championships after his arrival, and Miami was mysteriously a champion for the first time in just his second year after arrival. But you're right. Shaq's secret recipe was a good guard to play inside-outside with. Luka's is - who knows?
That said, Luka is playing with a HOF guard who won a championship with Lebron James and was toe-to-toe with him down the stretch of that finals. But playing with a guy who doesn't play defense and has 8 turnovers a game really creates a problem for most guards. Turnovers are deadly in a game like that. The Mavericks put a team together that Luka was happy with. They made a lot of trades and spent a lot of money to get Kyrie. But it's hard to get in a groove when the captain is young and has first-finals jitters.

@@ko7577 The year Shaq went to his first NBA finals, Penny was 1st team All NBA, Orlando's finals appearance wasn't all because of Shaq. And that's my point, Shaq never did anything without one of the best SG in the League. Penny, Kobe and Wade. Before Kobe became a starter, how was Shaq doing with the Lakers hmm ? And with 2 All star guards, Van Exel and Eddie Jones ? Where were all those finals appearances that you talk about when Shaq goes somewhere ? Nowhere. It was a disaster and Shaq was in his prime. Kobe's emergence changed everything. You know the truth behind the 2000 stats : Shaq was facing an old Rik Smits, at the Center position, he had no competition, when he faced Robinson he didn't had those stats. While Reggie Miller was the best 2 guard in the League at that time. Kobe exit early in game 2, 3min left in the 2nd Quarter, so his stats were clearly ruined. We know the story, Rose injured him on purpose, why ? He knew Kobe was a problem at 21, not 22 yet. They lost the game 3 without Kobe, so you see Shaq alone isn't enough, in the end of close games he needed a closer. And in Reggie Miller's words in game 4 when Shaq fouled out "we had no answer for n°8" even tough his ankle had swollen to the point he had to fight Phil to let him play the game. Don't try to reduce Kobe's importance in the Lakers 3peat, it's a waste of time. Look at Kobe's defensive assignements in finals compared to Shaq's, Miller, Iverson, Jason Kidd...and look at their FG% and turnovers. In those finals Shaq dominated average players while Kobe was the Lakers's closer and defended the best player in the opposite team which were 3 HOFers Miller, AI and Kidd.

He's the Finals MVP for ALL of his rings. Kobe was a little man for three of his.

    • @ko7577

These were the actual stats for this series:
      Shaq- 33 points (57% shooting), 15.8 rebounds, 4.8 assists, 3.4 blocks a game
      Kobe- 24.6 PPG (41.5% shooting), 7.8 rebounds, 5.8 assists, 1.4 steals
I think there are a lot of homosexual men out there who had a crush on Kobe back in the day. Guards shooting 41% don't win championships unless they're a Pippen. You've got a center with almost as many assists as the guard blocking 3.4 shots a game and nailing 57% of his shots from the field. I won't even go into the 15.8 rebounds he got because Kobe kept bricking everything. The Detroit series was even worse, Bryant shot 38% and took 40 more shots than the guy nailing 63% of his shots. But homos prefer Kobe.
And maybe you missed the announcer's "Kobe only had 15 last game, Shaq had 44." lol

Kobe's game is so beautifully flawed. He lacks Jordan's quick first step and LeBron's bionic power. So he often has to rely on multiple moves just to get to the basket. This results in fantastic display of skills and body control. But also leads him to be less efficient, for if all of his options are closed out he can't jump and bully people to the paint like Jordan and LeBron. I think that's his biggest difference between the legends. He's not as physically gifted. Jordan and LeBron has their hops and power, Kareem and Wilt are enormous, Shaq is so physically dominant, KD is so tall he can just shoot over everyone. That's why I have a heightened level of respect for Kobe and Curry. They're literally unicorns of the game. Nothing physically special about them but they make up for it with skills.

@@8ghosts When he was younger yes. From 08 - 12 he started losing that athleticism. Had a resurgence in 2013 because of the knee surgery he had. But that's pretty much it, he had to rely on skill as he got older.

Kobe didn't even shoot 44%. It was 41.5%. Thank you for putting up the reality of those three rings. There's always a Pippen. There's always a Jordan. In those first three runs, Shaq was the Jordan. Guards shooting 41% from the field don't win championships unless they're playing with something really, really big. If Kobe had gone to Charlotte and a smaller market, he'd have been a Melo.
