Just wanted to stop and say this video helped me not only decide which smart lock I wanted, but install the lock itself. I had this video looping on a nearby television while installing it. .. can almost quote it like a movie now. Just wanted to say thank you so much and this style video was easy to follow and had the best, most information for me.

Actually this is great for renters! Or at least the Nest one. Short-term renters only need to remember the door code and it expires when they are scheduled to leave so you don’t have to worry about a former renter coming back with their old code. Also, you can see who and at what time uses the code you’ve given them. I really want to put one on my own door but it has 8 deadbolts, initiated from a single lock. I don’t know if Yale has one that works with doors like this.

  • @danielabarrigagonzalez9616

The one-time passcode is what would be needed. also if someone tries the wrong code you need a notification. Wasn't clear if this supported.

I like the 'August Smart Lock Pro' way better. One (1) of the features that August Smart Lock Pro has is the 'Auto Unlock' feature that will automatically unlock the door when you're in range of the lock (about 10' feet away) from the door. This is great for when you have your hands full of things and you don't want to set everything down on the sidewalk to mess with the Keypad, or get your phone out of your pocket to unlock the door with your phone app. With August - you just start walking towards the door and you'll hear a Jingle on your phone letting you know it's unlocked, then it will 'Auto [Lock] after you get inside, for whatever delayed time you have previously setup.

Does the app show the AA battery strength?
Would be nice if the app showed that, so you know when to get ready for a battery change, vs having the unit die without warning.
Better yet, if the app would warn when the batteries are at 10%, that would make it a stronger buy in my opinion

  • @siddharth108

I wished they had a physical key as a back up unlock option instead of 9v battery as backup.

  • @PMZanetti
    @PMZanetti Před 5 lety +2

The 9v battery backup is a bizarre but creative solution. I’m not thrilled about the idea of telling someone who asks “can I just use the key if the smart lock doesn’t work?“… No, you need a 9 V battery....
HomeKit support is great for automation, but I would sooner have the Z wave support so that it can integrate with the Ring alarm system. Really a shame that they took a route to prevent you from ever having both.
The palming gesture that is required to wake the touch pad is bizarre.
Then lastly, there is no proximity unlock ability. This is the number one feature I want from a smart lock.

@@randygonzalez5758 I've certainly had that problem when trying to use the video doorbell as the hub, the plug in hub works much better. I have to wonder first and foremost if insurance companies will accept this as a valid lock for the door? I understand that they require a second lock, and if so, then what is the point, unless willing to install two, even if that is acceptable to them?
I did not see a demonstration of simply having the lock auto-function when walking up the the door without interacting with it, this a feature already present in competing products. And, the feature they did include of the emergency positive and negative terminals is well observed in the industry.
An immediate issue with this product would be peace of mind: if the door is locked or not? While the state of the bolt being extended may convince the lock, if the door is left open then the door is not actually locked. This of course can be remedied with a door/window sensor to tell if the door is aligned in the frame or not, but that really should be built into the lock itself, it's just waiting to be abused.
The best feature, aside from an internal bridge, was the tapering on the bolt tip, I thought that was a good idea.

If you don’t set a hub you won’t be able to lock and unlock when away from it, so you won’t be able if you correctly locked the door once you get at office for example. Not setting a hub will get this device ready to work only when near to it. Hope everything is clear

I’m sorry but manual locks are still my go to for the future! A hack able lock device doesn’t look to safe in my book!

Couldn’t you just narrow down the passcode from the fingerprint stains

that's a really good point. I have a push button 10-keypad smart lock like this, and fingerprints aren't an issue... but I see how it could be on this one. I live in Korea where these types of locks are standard on any apartment you rent. Some of them with digital keypads will rearrange the keypad number positions every time you wake it up. I wonder if there's an option for that on this one (maybe he mentioned it and I missed it)

I got the Kwikset Premis used for $90 and it is more fully featured than this thing.

Yes, also HomeKit and uses the Apple TV as a Bridge. Retail is around $250

We’ve had the Premis for about a year. It is incredibly unreliable with HomeKit. I’d say that it only works 40% of the time. I am constantly having to take the battery pack out, wait 10 seconds, then put it back in. It will work for a couple of days, then stop. Thank goodness the keypad always works! Before you ask, I never let the batteries get below 50%, and the lock is about 20 feet from the Apple TV box with a clear line of sight. I have reset it, restored it to factory settings, etc. Nothing fixes this dog. I would NOT recommend the Kwikset Premis at all. Looks great - works great with the keypad - totally worthless with HomeKit.
