#pokemon #pokémonRed #pokemonchallenge - Hry
It’s dumb but there is a situation where focus energy is useful in gen 1, if you’re using a fast Pokémon with/with a high crit rate move that wants to set up with swords dance or badge boost, you can use focus energy to NOT crit since they ignore your positive stat changes too.
JRose11 actually did use that on purpose with one of his MANY solo runs (at the time I write this, he ACTUALLY succeeded a solo DITTO run)
Not really worth it, because you're using a whole turn to do it when chances are two critical hits would probably do as much damage as setting it up.
@@williamfallsyeah but if you’re facing more than one pokemon it becomes worth it
@@williamfalls If you're +6 from swords dance and you one shot without a crit, but you do like a quarter with one it becomes worth it
Using focus energy is a legit strategy, it's not dumb but you're absolutely right
What an incomprehensible back sprite that Rhyno has.
Look like Cloyster or Lapras shell
I keep thinking it looks a bit like a weird Reznor
The entire strategy of the run was just "keep reseting the fights vs Gyarados until Hydro Pump misses" :D
Rhyhorn and Rhydon are Pokémon I thought were SUPER good back in the day. I mean its a rock rhinoceros and you get it pretty late into the game so it gotta be good, right?
Yeah that was before I learned how important speed and how aweful very common x4 weaknesses are.
Actually rhydon is fairly good in competitive gen 1 singles. The meta game is dominated by normal types and being able to switch in on hyper beam is pretty good. He’s not like an S tier Pokémon or anything but rhydon and golem are both decent Pokémon in gen 1 competitive.
as well, Zapdos, a pretty good Gen 1 OU staple, doesn’t do jack shit to it
Gen 1 Meta teams feature either Rhydon or Golem, both with their own advantages over the other.
@@briankim1098not anymore sadly. Golem is agreed to just be worse in almost every way. Explosion is the only thing it really has over Rhydon and that isn’t game changing enough to be better than Rhydon. It’s still not bad or anything but it’s just outclassed
@@adamstadick2044 Competitive play wasn't really a thing 7 year old me thought about.
I just thought "Oh cool a rock rhino! Aaaand it died to some leaves..."^^
In my head canon, Sabrina gives you the TM for Psywave because she gets tired of the move costing her the win and she doesn't want to use it anymore. Change my mind xD
Canonically very few trainers beat her or any gym leader. By the end of the game, only Red and Blue have their names carved onto the statues of every gym.
While she is portrayed as somewhat childish, less so than the likes of Whitney, I don't see her giving up on a move after 2 losses even if they were close together.
@@velvetbutterfly Counterpoint: it's fucking Psywave.
@@PoisonFlower765 like Brock using Bide is any better?
@@velvetbutterfly Brock is the first gym and doesn't use Psychic types, let him live.
This is hilarious because in addition to this video, Scott's Thoughts Just released a Rhydon line solo challenge in Fire Red today. So twice the rhino themed Pokemon today!
I mentioned that in the live chat earlier lol
They've done this a few times. Probably a coincidence but still always a treat
Coincidence is what I’m thinking it is
@@Chaosking5445 as solid snake would say... I don't believe in coincidences...
I'd love to see more meme runs. Something like "Can I beat pokemon (insert) using only The First Pokemon?" and you use Arceus, Mew, Bulbasaur and Rhydon.
Arceus: First Pokemon in existence that created the rest of existence.
Mew: Originally the ancestor of all Pokemon. My headcanon to get around that conflict is that Mew is the ancestor of all non-Legendary Pokemon (and Mewtwo).
Bulbasaur: First in the National Pokedex.
Rhydon: The first Pokemon created in real life.

"Lets get brock over with. At level 15 I lost all the time but as soon as I hit level 15 I won with a bit of health left." -Mah-Dry-Bread
I think Blastoise would've been harder than Venusaur. Venusaur being part Poison has reasons to fear STAB moves such as Dig and Earthquake. Blastoise MIGHT fear Thunderbolt but that is non-stab and Rhyhorn's special is...less than stellar.
Blastoise would've been a decent fight for Rhyhorn. Great defense, water moves the whole game (so Hydro Pump at the end), plus gen 1 Blizzard (yikes 🥶).
But if he made the rival pick Squirtle, his grass type would've been Exeggutor, who is less scary than Venasaur.
So, starters in both scenarios are hard fights, but one of his (rival) picks other picks is much less threatening. I get why he chose Bulbasaur.
Ah but it also results in his Rival's water type being Gyaraods who is also flying and thus weak to STAB Rock Slide too. So Picking Venusaur made the rival have a lot more weaknesses for him to exploit than he otherwise would have had.@@AnimeNut101
Nah, blastoise + exeggutor much easier than venusaur + gyarados
Normally yes but considering type coverage in this specific run having Verusaur (Poison so fearing EQ) Gyarads (Flying so fearing Rock Slide) and Arcanine (Fire so fearing both) is NOT exactly setting up for a hard fight for a Rhyhorn.@@chrisdaignault9845
Yeah gen 1 champion exeggutor, only attking move is barrage and stomp last move is hypnosis, yeah 3 moves on a champion fight is not good
Great run, just wanted to mention that Rhyhorn can learn Earthquake too, the TM is on the 10th floor at Silph Co. Hope the helps in the future
In solo runs Dig's higher PP count makes it more appealing too use, plus the invulnerability turn sometimes helps like when Blaine used a Super Potion and then Fire Spin when Rhyhorn was underground.
Right as you said "what an ending" my brain autofilled it with "THAT'S HIS OTHER NAME" 😂
Here's a Super Comment! I burst out laughing at your superthanks rant. It's insane that youtube just does that, and Happy Holidays MDB!
An early and very well deserved merry Christmas MDB! Thank you for making every Saturday something I can look forward to!
A brilliant Super Comment
@@bringanotebook28you mean "Super thanks"
5:08 even if the rival were to use good AI it still wouldn’t go solely for Sand Attack as in gen 1 it is listed as a normal type. (That can still hit ghost types)
(5:44) Which fossil did you take? I hear bananas are good for the monkey algorithm. :P
(11:41) Gotta love it when Blaine decides to heal while at full health.
(13:17) Whoa, that ambush! Good thing you were able to put that Meowth to sleep! :P
(21:24) Wow, Rhyno tanked that Mega Drain like a boss, and then that clutch PAR from Body Slam won it for you!
I’ve been requesting this for years but I still want my Pokémon Black with only Sawk and Throh run
Great run. Just to note that for Gen 1, miss chance -1 stage is 2/3 chance to hit. Gen 2+ changed this to 3/4 hit chance with -1 stage. Sand-attacking Pidgeys against slow mons are no joke.
That's even worse than I thought!
Sand-Attack is a normal type move in gen 1
I was just thinking about your Super Thanks rant, so this video was especially hilarious for me. And that that CZcams employee!!
Three ideas, short and simple:
How about a Vulpix run in gen 4 or 5? Might be some fun. It has some decent moves and/or can learn.
Second idea is an Eeveelution run. All Eeveelutions allowed - best would be gen 4 in Platinum, breeding will be needed, but i guess you will have some fun. On top, you need some time to relax - this should do the trick.
Last but not least, i think a Bruno Team run in gen 2 can be really weird. I just have a feeling it will be weird, but this might be interesting.
That sounds so fun! I love discovering old or obscure games to enjoy. And yeah, videos or tutorials that explain your exact problem clearly and solves it are the best things. Which channel was it by the way?
I hope you enjoy playing and figuring out your 1997 game!
13:17 That cat is adorable! 💞
In gen 1 the first sand attack knocks your accuracy down to 66%. Absolutely brutal.
Basically demolishing any hopes of hitting anything.
Yay! My boy, Rhyhorn!
Super commenting my super thanks
Also Gorgons alliance is a brilliant game, dungeon crawling and kingdom management with chunky ass 90s graphics. Based on one of my favorite DND settings as well
I haven't been able to get it working yet but I want to!
Man I could only imagine how a FireRed run would go.
Scoot thoughs did it today too! In fire red
Against the rival 5, learning mimic to take agility to outspeed would probably make you win a lot lower lvls
Can rhydon learn mimic?
I remember the first time I caught a Rhyhorn in Pokémon Yellow. It looked like a really cool and strong Pokémon and I spent hours trying to catch one in the Safari Zone.
Then I saw that its moves were crappy and it struggled to even stay alive to gain EXP in battles and promptly boxed it. Poor guy. At least it got some redemption when in gen 4 I traded a Rhydon with my brother to evolve into Rhyperior and became a part of my big team together with Gallade, Lucario and Empoleon
Another great vid as always! 👍
I know you do all your Kanto challenge runs in Red and Blue, but I would love to see you do this particular run again, but in Yellow.
I think your worries about Lorelei's Slowbro (as well as Bruno even) would've been more valid, due to better movesets for the Elite 4 teams. Also, I'm curious how the rival's team would be doing against you throughout the run, considering how different the rival is in Yellow.
loving these challenges keep up the great content thank you for all your hard work
Fun challenge vid as always!
The part about super coments was hilarious!
You would be so proud! I’m not super in wrestling but watched several hell in the cell matches last night. So COOL
That's crazy that Rhyhorn doesn't learn EQ naturally. Or any Rock Ground moves 😂
Not really gen1 movesets are mostly garbage
@@thedancingguy828 you'll be garbage if you carry on
Or any self buffing moves. Rip badge boost glitch
I wish I could write comments from the xbox but I've had to pause your video on the xbox to jump on my phone to write this comment but I honestly couldn't resist.
I hugely respect what you done with the video at 13:18 to 13:30 which is why I stopped to write this comment. I laughed so hard because it matches your personality so much, I don't want to spoil what happens for those that haven't watched that far into the video so just know that you my good sir are a clever man.
I just found a shiny Rhyhorn in the teal mask dlc when this vid popped up. He's one of my favorite pokemon and I can't wait to see how he does!
Finally my boi gets the chance to shine!!! My favorite Pokemon(besides his immediate Evo)
my best nickname for the rhyhorn line is rhydonald LOL
Psywave only only. Don’t have a specific game in mind. But that would be hilarious to watch much like the Night Shade / Seismic Toss run
Well it has to be gen 1 or gen 3 or there would be dark types. No struggling in a psywave run because struggle is way better than psywave usually. I would watch
Good show! It's awesome to see a genuine person get success.
The lore of rhyno... I appreciate that alot
I've been waiting for this 1!!!!!
Its also the most CZcams thing in the world for them to have more interaction with their content creators on Twitter than on their own site!
The best part about a Rhyhorn-only run is that you don't have to worry about pressing B for 37 whole levels. :P
You know what's my problem with those videos? I watch em when I'm in bed and falling asleep, seemingly there is no problem until you realize that I wake up and always forget to comment how much I actually enjoy them. It's great content, you have a great voice man. Also which fossil did you pick
I’m impressed you won at the level you did. That was a big surprise but I like Ryhorn so I’m happy.
Tbh I don't think I could do a 1 mon only challenge as I like my 6s teams 😂😅
Ha, take that Meowth! That's what you get for causing trouble in so many other runs
The ending is perfect
I love it how you and Scott used the same pokemon today
A “ harder” run? I get it! It’s a pun!
I still believe after you managed to beat this game with a Zubat, there anren't many other Gen 1 Pokémonthat could not beat this game alone. It's only a question of "How hard is it to".
Hell yeah, a run with my favorite Pokémon! I've been hoping for this for a while. Thanks for the early christmas gift!
That is absolutely amazing..! 🤣
"Gore! Gore! Gore!" -Paul Heyman :)))
Don't worry about missing so much. Went to play Red for the first time in 11 years and got the 1 in 256 glitch 3 times in 1 fight😭
It's actually pretty funny timing that this dropped same day as Scott's Thoughts put his Fire Red with the Rhydon line video out. Either way the poor critter gets brick walled hard by Misty.
6:23 I think one sand attack is actually worse than 75, I think it’s around like 67%. It’s crazy how gen 1 works. And I think the first smart AI is misty, as far as big fights go. I’m know theres some other trainer classes that have it but don’t know if any of them appear in early game
You winning the water gym with a crit, and starmie doing nothing was insane! I chose bulbasaur as my starter and by using razor leaf, I hit 24 crits, I would have hit 25 but my first razor leaf didn’t hit.
Betting on success but Level 80+ minimum because if you can't Outspeed and 1shot Lance's Gyarados it'll be either impossible or require a miss and Rhyhorn's base Speed is kinda bad if i recall.
Lance's gyardos was exactly what I was thinking as well he's gotta out speed
I think Mimic to steal Agility in rival fights in gen 1 could help a lot with slow mons like this
Super Thanks to you! (Super Comment when the CZcams Community Manager isn't looking at me)
5:05 sandattack in gen 1 is a normal type move, so he should not use it unless all his attacks are ineffective
Ironically with the badge boost glitch being so strong dividing your crit chance and having your attack stat sky rocket with less odds of crits doing less damage cause it ignores buffs seems pretty good, completely unintended, but pretty good!
Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen with Roxanne’s team from Pokémon Emerald? That will rock the Kanto region for sure.
Millions of channels on CZcams, but right now you get to enjoy a nice mah dry bread video. :) I hope each and every one of you is having a wonderful night, life is beautiful and grand. What an incredible common ground we all have here, it's truly amazing how pokemon brings so many people together.
If I had a nickle for every rihorn solo challenge that came out today I'd have 2 nickles, its not a lot but its strange it happened twice
Rhyhorns line is fun to use.
Def one of my favourite pokemon.
Difficult to use. But an absolute beast against anything physical
Yea fr, I wanna use one in Pokemon emerald and I looked at the upcoming gym and I'm like well fuck
can't wait for the christmas episode.
Yeah I just assumed that you'd cut all the rock slide misses 😄
Fun fact, I caught a shiny rhyhorn yesterday in pokemon scarlet lol. The timing on this is kinda funny.
MDB could have had EQ since before Koga by going to the 10th floor with the card key and beat that one rocket
Your right. Maybe he was counting on Dig's invulnerability turn to survive quad weak attacks due to bad speed and special? 🤔
Or he might've forgot, who knows.
@@AnimeNut101it's because he already had Dig which had higher PP and it didn't make sense to have double Ground moves.
Good video! you kinda forgot substitute...
Have you done a smeargle run? Would be interesting to see the moveseta you could come up witg
another impressive run kbh i thought you would get brick walled somewhere
„we Hit a big dig“ …… man I am too childish to ignore that 😂
Leaving a comment for the CZcams algorithm. And I’m definitely 100% not watching this on the drive home
MDB goes into a crazy explanation of Gen 1 AI on super-effective status moves…in the one generation that Sand-Attack is a Normal move, not Ground.
Still waiting on that pokemon stadium 2 that you said you were going to do
Once again asking for a Platinum Lopunny Solo.
Wouldn’t “speeding into a brick wall” take a while?😂
It's funny; I got two dittos from catching Rhyhorns and got a shiny Rhyhorn in Go, and now you're putting up a Rhyhorn challenge. I don't think I've ever used the Rhyhorn line in a playthrough before, though I do remember my brother having a great Rhyperior when he played Battle Revolution. Lightning Rod was a pretty good ability in that game since it was all double battles.
Also 100% approve of the cat pics, along with you talking about something unrelated to the video like how dumb the name "Super Thanks" is and... basically everything you ramble on about in the outros.
Also two more ideas I had for challenge runs: Pokemon Black with only one Litwick (probably my favorite ghost-type pokemon that I had a level 80-ish one of in White for some reason), and Pokemon Platinum with only one Phione (pure water-type, has 80s across the board for base stats).
5:08 It won't either way since Sand Attack is normal type in gen 1.
In Gen 1, Sand Attack is normal type. It was changed to ground in gen 2
For me rock slide has always hit like dig
Thank you for that run, it was a lot of fun as usual. Never realised the horrible moveset of Rhyhorn. Btw: Ehich fossil did you take? Also: Can you beat Pokemon X/Y with only one Noibat?
I still think it'd be a great bit to do the Helix Fossil bit, but the footage shows taking the Dome Fossil instead.
I heard he took the Dome fossil in the footage during an old run now. As in, I heard it like a year ago and they said it was an older video then
Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver with only one Pachirisu. We have some love for Sinnoh’s electric rodent, right?
Just watched Scott’s Thought on FireRed! You guys called each other to schedule the month? Lol
can you beat the fighters guild quests in oblivion with only Mysticism spells?
I came from Twitter to ask which fossil did you take?
Oh boy! I wonder if he's gonna pick the Dome Fossil this time!
Twitter gang? Twitter gang.
I’m usually Twitter gang but I guess I was asleep
Grow up, Twitter is fucking stupid.
Imagine using twitter.
X factor gang
At CZcams you get ghosted for having a good idea
I'd like to see a gen2 Chinchou run.
His super tweet got super ghosted for his super comment, that's super funny😂
My dude!! You should play emerald with Wally’s team! Might be fun 😮
Next you should do Heartgold with only first form grass types
I was thinking, that maybe focus energy would be good in Scyther. Its slash is a guaranteed crit but because gen 1 it ignores swords dance, making it weaker than a non-crit boosted slash. But with focus energy it is possible to not crit to do more damage after a boost
I’m looking forward to the Christmas episode! I’m sure you have a fun idea for a Christmas themed run!
Also, which fossil did you take? Comments are good for the CZcams algorithm!
Praise the spiral 🌀
