#pokemon #pokémonBlue #pokemonchallenge - Hry
at some point you should say a different fossil from another generation to mess with people on these runs
He did. IIRC it was on a fossil only run where he started with Omanyte.
Wait, what fossil did he take?
I'm curious what fossil did he take?
At some point you should move on and stop repeating an old meme for the 1.000.000th time
@@lady1kaka i find it funny because he records a new one each time it's dumb but I get where you are coming from
Video suggestion: A solo Pokémon run using a really strong Pokémon (eg. Mewtwo) but in a language you can't speak, so that the challenge comes from game knowledge rather than the strength of your team.
Do you have any idea how difficult that would be!? For MDF’nB of course
Just not on b/w2. The password section does not do nicely with being in another language.
Has to be French too, for Canadians.
on the og? not really an issue. on gold and silver? specially if its been a while since you last played? yeah, that might be a deal breaker.
Even if you don’t consider yourself part of the Pokémon community, a lot of people in it have a great deal of respect for you because you helped inspire a whole generation of solo runners and the community that’s built up around them and while you may not be a technically skilled or knowledgeable player, you are arguably still the best as a story teller of any kind of play through, Pokémon or not.
Agreed. I'm glad that MDB got the added exposure of the Pokemon challenge popularity during covid, but I will always wish more people gave his LetsPlay content a try.
Ex: people who like his Pokemon challenges because of his storytelling, would also probably like his many Crusader Kings LPs, since there is lots of fun story in those (but without the script and extra editing)
Swift (and Bide, funnily enough) aren't affected by the 1/256 glitch since they skip accuracy checks entirely.
MDB out here lyin' to us 😅
Exactly.
Wally gave me a call and he’s tired of the slander.
Pokémon emerald Wally challenge only. You can only grab the pokemon Wally has on his team, and when he gets them(so before his fight you can get his Pokemon) for example if he say, had a gulpin in the fight after before the elec gym, you can’t get Gulpin until after you beat him.
Fair game on Victory road I’ll give you that pass. After the last gym you can get all of Wally’s Pokemon.
Wally only has Ralts until Victory Road. That acquisition rule wouldn't make sense.
@@elconejofuncoExactly this. It’s a fun idea but you only battle Wally twice; once in Mauville and once again at Victory Road where he’s got a full team.
Still a nice idea though. Replace the starter with Ralts, then acquire Skitty, Roselia, Swablu and Magnemite along the way. Even keep “Norman’s Zigzagoon” for HMs if you want.
@@finnfiasco Nah, Roselia is not in Emerald so it's better to start with it instead and catch a Ralts.
I'm kinda wondering if Blaine's terrible AI can be accredited to his "weird old man" personality type. Like he's just doing whatever he can to confuse you and throw you off your game at this point
That would be very Roshi of him.
I actually looked it up. He has special AI. When a trainer has special AI, the game picks a value from 0-255 to decide if a specific choice overwrites their turn. Things like Jugglers switching Pokemon if X
@@Darkington except roshi was actually a good fighter lol
@@jackdiddles4304 The anime version of Blaine is a good fighter, and apparently good with wearing a disguise.
Im the safari zone if you're in a good area you can spin around with light taps without moving and your steps don't go down, at least I remember this working.
I remember reading about that and trying it out and it worked.
I don't know if it works in gen 1, but it does in gen 3 for sure
@@ssjbread2803it 100% works in gen 1. It's just more difficult
Honestly MDB, I like watching your Pokemon challenges BECAUSE you're a casual Pokemon player. I find it much more enjoyable to see these kinds of challenges from the perspective of someone like me, who's just your average Pokemon player. Seeing people who are Pokemon experts really break it down and do things super optimally is fine, but it's harder for me to relate to. EVs and IVs and optimal natures and stuff are just real beyond me.
You did inspire me to do a challenge run of my own: BDSP but with only bug types. I got walled at the E4 because. Well. Flint. But at some point I'm gonna pick it back up and see if I can finish it, because I'm like, so close already.
Absolutely. The 'down-to-earth' nature of MahDry strikes again ☺
16:21 actually, no-kinda! swift bypasses the accuracy check entirely, EXCEPT in the Japanese versions, where it acts as 100% accurate. it’s why Gamechamp3000 used it so heavily in her no hit challenge, it just doesn’t check for accuracy
You know what? I have been damn miserable for so so long now, but hearing that you are "happy" right now makes me feel better. No matter how bad things get, things do also get better and that little outro meant more to me than you could have imagined. I am glad you are happy, and thank you ❤️
No, Swift CANNOT miss in generation 1. It bypasses the accuracy check entirely so the 256 glitch cannot occur. You may have some Mandela Effect memory of it happening in the past to you but I assure you it did not.
This is also why it can hit things that have dug and or flown iirc.
Someone else replied a comment here that there was a change between Red/Green and Blue that fixed this. Prior to it, they still had the 255/256 chance, but would hit evaded or Dig/Fly without negative modifiers.
@@lordgeovanni I question whether that's true or not. If they did that, then that means they knew about the 256 glitch but fixed it only for Swift instead of fixing it for every move. Sure it's _possible_ that they had such limited time that they could only put together a quick fix of "just ignore accuracy checks altogether" and couldn't manage to figure out the 256 glitch but I'd want some evidence.
Afaik you can just stand on a single grass tile and have the sprite change its facing direction without taking a step and it will still trigger pokemon encounters. That way you could theoretically farm for encounters in the safari zone without it costing you steps! But I suppose save states work just as well.
Yes. U have to tap rlly carefully on an actual console but I think if ir in a corner also u can just waggle it
The easiest generation to abuse that kind of mechanic is in Gen 3 with the Acro Bike. You can just bounce in the grass and generate new encounters without taking steps
pretty sure Swift actually doesn’t get affected, it skips accuracy checks entirely
pretty sure that's correct. I've never had a swift miss. Protected against maybe but never missed
Correct.
Same if you use an X accuracy. Since a gen 1 x accuracy bypasses accuracy checks. A friendly reminder that Gen1 is a well programmed set of games.
Are you sure? I could have sworn I've seen it miss. I could be misremembering though.
@@MahDryBreadI believe there is yet another glitch where if it does less than one damage it says it misses :) most commonly seen when poison sting is being used against a quadruple resist. But X accuracy and Swift skip accuracy checks and are immune to the 256 glitch.
If memory serves, the reason Blaine is Like That with his items is due to the fact the devs literally just forgot to finish his AI. Basically, the trainers with items are assigned an item, a number of times per pokemon they can use them, a percent chance to use the item, and a situation to roll that percent. In Blaine's case, he has a 25% chance to use a super potion, buuuuut they forgot to give him a situation to check, so he just rolls the 25% chance to use the super potion every turn, regardless of anything else happening.
Pinsir's Red/Blue sprite looks real goofy with those beady eyes.
Hey in the Safari zone, just use balls, for future reference btw, "Lyra made a website" made a video and had done the maths
Really? Because when I just used safari balls non-stop it just failed every time, but as soon as I hit one rock then a ball, it worked
Your luck is hysterical lets just put it that way.
@@MahDryBread me playing baldurs gate and never rolling higher than 10 regardless of the number on or of the dice. 😅
@@Earthboundmike Well I'm happy I got that failed attempt on screen then! I just figured I was doing it wrong!
@@MahDryBread you can now officially call yourself MahWeirdLuck
The idea of the champ having leer is so funny. That's a worse move choice than those slacker champs that don't have a full set of moves on their pokemon.
Changing direction on a tile counts as a movement for encounters but not as a step for the safari zone
The shrews are some of my favorite pokemon of all time, so I'm super happy to see them play their part in the run! Don't worry too much, as hyped as I was for them to show up, by the time you remembered to go catch one, I had forgotten you could xD
Forgot to mention: Really enjoying these version exclusive runs! So cool to see a fun and flavorful team, really gives that feeling of going on a journey and crafting your own team as opposed to just brute forcing with whatever your favorite lil guy is (love the solo runs too obvi)
Uh, Swift is NOT affected by the 256 glitch. It doesn't do an accuracy check at all, so it never rolls the rng. It's why it can hit through Dig and Fly as well. Using an X Accuracy has the same effect, just skipping the check instead of boosting a Stage. Dunno about the Fly/Dig thing though.
For a simple challenge, Pokemon (any gen 1-3) with only single-type Pokemon. So no Normal/Flying, Grass/Poison, etc..
The version exclusive runs are becoming my favourite.
disagree I think they're too easy
@@KingObliv That'll change if Mah Dry Bread goes beyond Gen 2.
Ruby/Sapphire, Diamond/Pearl, and Black/White don't even have enough for a full team, The D/P teams in particular suck.
Swift is exempt from the 1/256 glitch. It bypasses the accuracy check entirely so it never rolls that 0-to-255 number
Exactly. The only way Swift won't do anything in Gen I is if you somehow decide to use it on a Ghost type (in other words, the Gastly line).
Someone else replied a comment here that there was a change between Red/Green and Blue that fixed this. Prior to it, they still had the 255/256 chance, but would hit evaded or Dig/Fly without negative modifiers.
im gonna be honest, people make too much of a deal on the 1/256 bug. to me, i dont really get the issue. yeah, its luck, on something that should be garanteed. but, you could see it as exactly that, luck, and its not like this is an issue that affects only the player, enemies are also capable of get that draw. so yeah.
How dare you say you had a cat in your lap and not have a pic for us.
Swift skips accuracy check so cannot miss.
It's so good to see Ninetales getting some use in this run. It's my favorite Pokemon from the first 150, maybe tied with Clefairy.
Also, don't sell yourself short! You've done these challenges for quite a while, and as someone who also watched tour Stadium runs you've definitely improved over the years. I'm glad you have fun with these challenges! They're perfect to listen to on long car rides or while cooking.
8:08 It's a good thing that you did not went and surf east of Cinnabar to catch a Pinsir, because as you mentioned it is a glitch.
blaine and trainers like him are for sure the reason pokemon came up with the idea of "smart ai" where you can easily manipulate the opponent into not attacking you if they have something like agility.
full health potions, and super potions at that stage especially will forever hold a special place in nostalgia
Dabadee Dabadie...
Requesting Pokemon B2W2 With Only One Chinchou.
16:23 swift doesn’t miss from the 256 glitch because it does not check for accuracy and the glitch happens when it checks for accuracy.
I have an idea for a fun challenge, One that means you could even use Drowzee. Can you beat Pokemon Black (Or any game from gen's 5 ,6 or 7) with only the move Assist? Purrloin learns Assist at level 6 so it'd be the starter, Then if you get a male Purrloin you can breed it with other's to get more Pokemon. I think this would be a great wacky challenge since the more Pokemon on your team the more random the move is.
For any that don't know Assist uses a random move known by any of the user's party Pokémon, With some exceptions. So even Pokemon that can't use Assist would still be useful if they have good moves that Assist can use. Drowzee is in the Human-Like Egg Group so If you want one with Assist you'd need a Spinda since they're in the Field and Human-Like Egg Groups so can breed with Purrloin and Drowzee. You could also use a Chimchar as a starter if you give it Assist as an Egg Move, They're also in the Field and Human-Like Egg Groups so a male one can breed the move into any Pokemon with Assist.
This is a very odd idea, but I think it would be fun to try XY with only the rivals team. And I don’t mean Serena/Calem, I mean the absolute disappointments that Shauna, Trevor, and Tierno are. I feel like it would be so funny to watch MDB struggle to beat Diantha with a Roserade that has one move. 😂
Anyone else used to watch this guy a lot but now only do on occasion, but when you rarely do, you're quickly reminded that this is a really great channel?
You don't have to walk in the Safari Zone to run into pokemon. You can stand in one spot and turn different directions. This can cause encounters without using any steps, so the real limit is how many safari balls they give you.
Yes, Victreebel can learn Body Slam. It actually makes it one of the strongest gen 1 pokemon for, well, as you know, Lance reasons aka Agility spam, but more importantly because swords dance + body slam sweeps almost every trainer in the game, and razor leaf is amazing backup for stuff like Rhydon
Hey now you need to do a sandshrew or sandslash playthrough to make up for his late arrival.
Every time I see a Gen 1 playthrough, the scotch tape holding the game together shows. And it is hilarious. Especially Blaine
I mean it's not a lot sooner but you could get slash at 44 on Meowth then evolve it.
😂😂 I like how you said “he used fire blast with sandslash” 😂😂@12:19
I love how gen 1 gym leaders would use x items along with healing items, it's such s potent combination if it was still used in today's generations, that would seriously make gym leaders more challenging
You are absolutely my favorite youtube creator for pokemon
Between Sandslash, Victreebel, and Persian, the crits were definitely the defining strategy of this run.
Interesting history lesson Japanese didn't have a different word for green and blue until relatively recently
This is the first one of these I've watched in probably a couple of years and it's so nice to hear that you're in a happy place right now. I also really like that the format of these videos is still the same as it was when you started, even down to the the same damn jokes, something so down to earth and wholesome about it.
Skill or no skill you’re one of my favorite poketubers bc you just have fun. You’re a breath of fresh air with your laid back and just always happy personality. Enjoyed the vid!
Aww, no cat assistance run
"Pokemon Gold with only Normal types"
Instant flashbacks to your old playthrough- "Will this medicine cure Amphy?" 🤣🤣🤣
A Pokémon Gold and Silver run with the four Pokémon bullies from the first Pikachu short, Pikachu's Summer Vacation? So, Raichu, Snubbull, Cubone, and Marill?
Small correction; Swift is unaffected by the 1 in 256 glitch, as it specifucally skips the check in the first place. Ganechamp3000 made a whole challenge video on not taking hits, and Swift was essential to beating it because it specifically is unaffected.
@11:50 I'm right there with you, I just play and sometimes stream the Pokémon games for fun, because well... they're fun! Keep being you, and thanks for answering my *NGL* Instagram question the other night, lol. Now, back to the regularly scheduled viewing of the video! 😄
"I'm just a guy who loves pokemon and has a gaming channle" Truer words could not have been said dude.
Really enjoying these version exclusive runs. Looking forward to whichever fossil you take next.
The strategy you mentioned doing with Vulpix is exactly what I do whenever I add it to my own team when I play through Blue. Flamethrower is such a good and reliable move, especially compared to the limited pool of Fire-type moves to choose from in Gen 1.
First vid I have seen of you and I must say it was really fun! Blue is a huge nostalgia trip for me, it was my second game oy agme 😊
Hey Mah-Dry-Bread, been watching you for the past 4 years and just wanted to say thank you, thank you for making these videos and just talking about Pokémon and challenging yourself in different ways, I listen to one of your videos on my way to work all the time and I want you to know that it makes me happy to just listen no matter how many times I've heard it. Thank you again for posting your videos and having fun with it, if there is ever a challenge I would like to see, it would be Gen 5 Ice Moves only, have a good day my friend and keep yourself in good health!
Nice video. Pinsir is my favorite pokemon, so it was good to see it in a MDB challenge.
This is a cool concept! I might go ahead and play a version exclusives run soon.
I love your videos for listening while i am doing something else like dusting or sweeping. So thank you for that. = )
16:21 the 1/256 glitch only affects swift in the japanese versions of red and green because it doesn't bypass accuracy, it works normally in red and blue :)
You don't have to walk around the Safari Zone when trying to encounter Pinsir. Just go to a grass tile in the first area, and lightly tap the d-pad up, down, left, or right to change direction without taking a step. Each change of direction counts as a step as far as encountering wild Pokemon goes.
When I was a kid and discovered the d-pad light-tap method, I challenged myself to catch as many Safari Zone rare Pokemon as possible while not moving a step. I became a spinner trainer by choice 😅.
Loving the version exclusive challenges! I love the solo challenges too but it's a nice change to see the pokemon be allowed to evolve and how well a team can work together,
Sabrina doesn't know how Pokemon works...
KINDA LIKE MAH-DRY-BREAD!
GOT HIM!
jk.lol.
I love your stuff man.
I've wanted to see a vulpix run for YEARS... I'll take this as a consolation prize!
About the accuracy thing:
Swift does not use the glitched accuracy formula that 100% accurate moves do. It just doesn't check for accuracy when you use swift, letting you hit your opponent even if they are underground. It also is not subject to the 256 glitch because it does not call the accuracy formula. Easy misconception to make though!
Interesting point about the 256 glitch, moves like Swift can't be affected by it since they skip the accuracy check. Using an X-Accuracy also has this same effect; the moves will just bypass the accuracy check.
the thing with gen 1 glitches, if you aren't able to start them yourself and it's things like badge boost and 256 glitch, it's fair as you can't predict it.
Just wanted to thank you for doing what you do. Been watching your channel for a long long time and I always enjoy it. I usually don't comment. But I just wanted to tell you this.
Keep up the good work
I used to watch your videos but then I stopped because I hope I'll get Scarlet and a switch. Now I came back and felt like nothing changed and I can go back and have little change. I love that from you. Keep up the good work. Damn, I miss your content already.
Small correction, while yes the 1/256 glitch exists for most moves, it works because of the accuracy because evasion boosts and accuracy drops exist, I'm pretty sure it checks if its under the a certain number if it hits, with the maximum being 256, but because 256 is not less than 256, the move can miss. However by using an X-Accuracy or Swift the Pokémon just ignores the accuracy check therefore no 1/256 glitch. Which yes does mean by using one X-Accuracy, if you don't switch the moves all moves always hit, even 30% accurate One-Hit KO moves.
Vulpix is my favorite pokemon, so it was super exciting seeing it and Ninetales in the team! And being so helpful nonetheless too, awesome run
I like the idea that he says comments are good for the youtube algorithm slightly faster every video so by the time he plays every Pokemon its over 1000x speed
Happy you're happy. Swift actually cannot miss, even with the 256 glitch. It bypasses accuracy checks entirely. Like when X-Accuracy is applied, same thing happens.
Are we ever going to se a Pokemon Elite Redux let's play on this channel it's really fun
Nice run! Looking forward to your monotype run next week mate! Peace✌️❤😊
Speaking of pokemon blue, I was out checking places today for some games and stuff
I went into a pawn shop and found a legit good condition copy of pokemon blue for only $29... what a steal
I'm pretty sure if you just turn on the spot in the safari grass, it counts as a new step for finding an encounter, but not towards your actual safari steps. So if you need to do another run where you try to find something in the safari, you could try that and see if it works. I could be entirely wrong about this though.
The gen 1 miss glitch doesn't apply to swift. It's because during the accuracy check phase of the damage calculation is bypassed entirely when swift is used. This is why swift also hits during semi-invulnerable moves such as fly or dig.
Dude, you are a Pokémon trainer. Just own it.
Swift does not have the 256 accuracy issue because it simply ignores the accuracy calculations entirely. There is an exception in the original Red and Green where, for some reason, it was just a 100% accuracy move with no special effect.
Here's how the 1-in-256 glitch works. When checking accuracy, the game rolls a number between 0 and 255. Accuracy is stored as such a number, so the game checks if accuracy < rolled number, and if so, the move hits. 100% accuracy is stored as 255, so if you roll 255 the move misses because 255 is not < 255, it's equal, not strictly less than.
Swift bypasses accuracy checks, so the 256 glitch doesn't affect it. And I believe fixed-damage moves also do that.
I would have just taught Persian Bubble beam for Blaine and forgotten that Sandshrew even existed.
Magmar IS redundant...and a duck! A redundant duck!! 😅😂
so
A: did you know you was walking in tiles of grass in the safari zone that were never gonna give you a encounter.
B: there is a video called "How does the Safari Zone even work?" made by "Lyra made a website" that explains how catching works in that place. real fun and interesting video to watch
My poor boy Sandshrew. I think if you want. It might be fun to do version exclusives for Yellow. Being if it's exclusive to either red or blue, but available in Yellow. Looks like you get to choose between Vulpix and Growlithe, etc.
Swift actually doesn't have a chance to miss even with 256 glitch. Swift actually bypasses accuracy checks (just checked and apparently it can even hit pokemon during the first turn of fly or dig). Same thing happens if you use an x accuracy, in gen 1 it makes every move bypass accuracy checks.
MDB using more than one Pokémon with more than one type is like Goku taking off weighted clothes.
Oblivion with only Quest rewards as weapons/armor
Swift doesn't take the accuracy check into account. That's why it NEVER misses even during fly/dig. Poketuber badge revoked.
Not teaching Persian bubble beam and thunderbolt hurts my soul 😂
Swift can't miss since it bypasses the acc check. Loved the video, looking forward to it
Run Ideas.
Any Gen with a Champion team in first forms.
Poliwag run.
Vulpix run.
All three starters run.
Gen 3 Zangoose and Seviper run because of Pokedex lore.
Opposite of your poison moves. Pick your least favorite and only use those moves.
Questions.
1- Why is poison your favorite type?
2- Why is MDB AMA not a thing any more? By the way I think MD BAMA, like Obama, is hilarious.
3- does the chimera sponsorship change when you don't do an ad for them?
4- Is the happy because Ex- Mrs MDB finally out and gone?
You don't have to waste steps in the safari zone. If you can get into a good corner and tap the directions against the wall or heck even just in the middle of the grass; as long as you don't take a step in any direction, changing directions and not walking forward can give encounter chances.
Cannot believe you forgot my man. Been fuming at my phone for sooooooo long!!!!
Still a great video- see ya next week
Listening to your runs before bed, it would be cool to see you beat pokemon gen 4/8 with Cynthia's team starting with Gible since it was her starter. I'm sure it will be an easy run, but it's nice to mix things up a bit
If you're doing team runs, leaving it on Shift instead of set seems to make the challenge much easier. Removing debuffs like sand-attack after a KO for free seems busted.
16:16 Swift is subject to gen 1 miss only in Japanese gen 1 games (source: Bulbapedia)
And yes, a glitchless run remains valid if you get one, for it is out of your control.
Pokémon challenge: Gen 1, No entering any pokecenters. That means you have to manage a team, while not depositing Pokémon until you get to the glitched pc in Celadon. If you use it ;)
Swift avoids the accuracy check entirely so it's not actually affected by the Gen 1 miss except in the Japanese versions where if works like any other move with that would have "100%" accuracy. Although Swift does work as intended in the Japanese versions if the opponent has a Substitute up.
16:22 - Not so, the 1/256 glitch only occurs in relation to the internal accuracy check for most moves. Swift bypasses the accuracy stat altogether and can even hit through invulnerable phases of two-turn moves in this Gen.
I see a lot of people had the same idea but you don't have to use steps in the zafari zone. You can spin since each change of direction counts as a refresh if your square of grass but since you didn't move the counter doesn't change. If I am remembering correctly it should work on all 2d pokemon games
I can be proud of it
I beat the first league with only one togetic in heartgold :) thanks for a different way to play pokemon
Challenge idea! Do the exact opposite of Pokemon with no new moves. So Pokemon, but you always learn the new move no matter what. Even if it sucks. The rule about TMs can be however you want it. You can always learn any TM you find along your travels and sell the ones that no one in your party can learn right then and there. Or you can play with just learning the level up moves and selling all TMs you find.
