  • The Diawl Bach is a Welsh pattern and literally translated means "Little Devil.: This deadly pattern has many variants, such as this one, which is one of my favorite suggestive stillwater patterns. This hare's ear variant is similar to others, but the pink hot spot head has proven particularly effective for me. This pattern's slender, sleek lines work well when trout are feeding on Callibaetis nymphs and scuds, especially in clear water.

Oh man I like this little pattern. Good tip on tying in the throat Phil, thank you. Back later I just saw a rabbit run by ...

Thanks Loren. Glad you enjoyed it. Save some of that rabbit for someone else. 😃

I used a dark peacock version of this fly at Lac Le Juene and did extremely well. A very slow retrieve along a weed bed kept me well entertained for hours!
Thanks for sharing, this is a fantastic fly..

Thanks, great to hear, Wayne, I always have peacock-bodied versions with me too. Such a great fly that can be tied using a variety of materials.
      Cheers, Phil

Nice tie Phil, I’m going to add a few next to the other Diawl Bach patterns in the box. Thanks.

👍. Tying is great but fishing is better. This is an awesome turn and burn pattern.

Last spring/summer a couple different versions of the traditional Peacock Diawl Bach crushed for me. I will have to try this pattern!
    Thanks for sharing!

I have great success using a flashback peacock version when fish are taking scuds.

What is the best way to fish it. Line choice and technic.

Great question. I fish this shallow the majority of the time. Floating or Midge Tip line with a 12’-15’ leader. You could also use a hover or clear intermediate line. A slow hand twist with pauses is my standard retrieve. I have also used a long slow strip or brisk 2-4 inch strip retrieve with pauses at times. Keep playing with different retrieves to see which one fish respond best to.
      Cheers.
