Dior, Schiaparelli, Chanel & Balenciaga ~ Fashion History in Film and Drama

- Two new dramas are currently on our screens, Balenciaga on Disney and The New Look on Apple TV. As yet I haven’t see either, but I’m immensely looking forward to watching them. Cristóbal Balenciaga, Christian Dior and Gabrielle Chanel are brought to life once more, along with a host of other key people in their lives. Last year I also saw Transatalantic on Netflix which features many costumes directly referencing Elsa Schiaparelli. In 2019 I was thrilled to see the Dior exhibition at the V & A and then in 2023 I was so lucky to be able to see the wonderful Schiaparelli exhibition in Paris.
In this chat I look at each of these designers, designing and creating haute couture in Paris during the same time period. There of course is so much left out as each have fascinating stories to tell, this is such a brief touch on a subject that fascinates me. I forgot to mention the film Mrs Harris Goes to Paris which I greatly enjoyed and is also another wonderful peek into Dior’s world.

Interesting history lesson. I've never been a big fashion label fan. I just love the fashions from the 40's. I appreciate well made quality tailored design, good fabric and nice yarn to knit with. Looking forward to your next video.

This is so lovely of you to say Debbie, thankyou so much ❤️. Oddly my daughters were asking me if I enjoyed any part of school the other day and I said not much that I can think of. There was the occasional teacher who inspired but I don’t think we got the best did we. They said maybe that’s why you became a teacher then to do it the way you thought it should have been. 💖

I love Dior’s designs. He really was the face of the New Look. Sadly, however, I think Jacques Griff is severely underrated as a designer. He knew fabrics, he knew draping, he knew construction. His tulle skirts look almost architectural. He honestly was one of the best, in my exceedingly humble (and very limited in knowledge) opinion.
I’ve not heard of him, so now off to Google. Thanks so much for tipping me off as he sounds fascinating 🤗
