That deer guy wanting to be there when you start that rebuilt is amazing. A farmer spends a bloody fortune to buy a tractor, mainly to use it to work in his business. Not to be sitting around waiting for some wanker to go to you at his majesties pleasure. You wasted no time getting the job done, now your both being screwed around even more!

I had always wondered how they made the fractured rod caps as well until a few years ago I toured the Cat factory in Lafayette, IN. I watched them make fractures rods for the C-175 engines and they use a laser to “work harden” the rod exactly where they want it to break then they just put an expanding mandrel inside the bore of the rod and it pops right where it’s supposed to.

It was very neat to watch. I had always pictured clamping the rod in a large vise and just smacking it with something to get it to break. If you ever can get out that direction that entire tour was awesome. They build the 3500, c175, 3600, and c280 engines there and I believe the 3408 and 3412 as well.

  • @gwbuilder5779

Hey Warren, my understanding about the split bearing cap is to offset the stress load on the cap bolts and to maintain a more true surface of contact through the TDC and BDC travel. I know that the heavy power machines and race engines had a huge gain in longevity with less rod bolt/cap failure. Of course all that really means is that they raised the breakage rate to equal that of the crank journal and all the other parts. I guess the trade off is whether you prefer a broken rod cap that breaks the crank on it's way out the side of the block or a broken crank that throws a rod through the side of the block, either way is catastrophic damage in most cases, but occasionally it just stops cold.
Anyway you are definitely not imagining the bs and circus hoop crap. When you said you had to wait for the jd rep to be present for start up I just held my comment because I was hoping they would do you right, but it is an absolute disgrace because it is so common. When the dealer sells you pile of crap and tells you not to worry about the flies, you know you got hosed bad.
Just remember that you choose to do the best job you can and quite frankly that makes them look as bad as they really are and they can't hide it. There are shops all over the country with the exact same complaints every single day with the exact same response from jd. The giant green turd don't care!

    Hello Warren
I follow your chanel extensively.I hope your fall recovery is without problems.
I rarely disagree with your comments. However I must make an exception regarding the comment about the anti rotation tab on the bearing shells. If they were just for alignment there would be no need to machine the groove under the cap. The tab is not there to stop the bearing from spinning if run out of oil or any other not normal operational condition occurs. It is there to keep the bearing from rotating and having the oil galley stay in the correct location. If you go back enough in engine history the tab was not always there and bearing rotation was a somewhat frequent problem. But thatis just my 2 cents worth on the comment. Keep up the good work and I am looking forward to the Deer First Start.

The turbo 300/400 engines had 12 oil jets under the pistons (on bearing web in block) and the NA engines used 6 - also the cylinder heads, water pumps, radiators and oil coolers were different. The blocks as best I can say are the same - different cranks, rods and pistons let you build anything from a 312 to a 466 - again this was what I knew 40 years ago when I was an IH ag rep.

    @mongomay1 Před 3 lety

    Thanks Warren,
It is sad but a necessary evil having to check and verify what vendors are doing for you. At some point certain of your preferred vendors; you are going to have to have a sit down about doing their work and what your expectations are to be from them and it should be put in writing. I even had problem vendors put in special instructions any time an order was requested that certain things had to be done before shipping in their computer system to be printed out on the invoice for packing so at least 2-3 people saw the instructions.
I had to line item initial every item to what was ordered to what was received on the delivery paperwork, otherwise the vendor would never get paid in full for the order.
There were some vendors I used that were slightly higher in costs and I would have to write a justification to use them, because we had a department rule XXX.xx dollars on repair parts or services that we had to get three quotes for like items and use the lowest one.
In a single man shop you do not have the time resources to perform that activity daily. At some point in time you will either address the issues or just accept it as a cost of providing service to your customers. I do not think you want to work this last way, you want your vendors to work like you do.

  • @stillliving5899

Put a heating pad on that wrist, because the heat will increase blood flow to the injured area. I had a knee specialist tell me that ice slows down the blood flow, making it take longer to heal. I was in a bad work accident, and broke my leg, tore the ACL off the bone, and tore cartilage and ligaments in my ankle. The idiot's at comp thought I was faking, so they made me do PT, and use a treadmill, don't know what for since it was november, and I had to work in the cold carrying 5/8 sheets of plywood to get the backhoe to the grave to dig it, and then set the vault. Working at a cemetery with big hills, and a couple burials a week was rough. I threw the crutches away, and my boot pretty much held my leg together. Took 9 month's for them to x ray and find out that the bone rehealed in a cross shape with pointed ends. They did an mri of my knee, and could see a tear, and dead cartilage from walking all over the cemetery. All the Dr.s were shocked that I worked that way, but I said my bill's aren't gonna stop coming. I had a pt lady from when the accident first happened who transferred to the pt I had to go to after acl reconstruction who told me she was sorry she did not believe me, and that if she ever saw me again, she would not doubt me. These people who fake shit cause people with real injuries to suffer. If you ain't crying they think you are faking. I ended up having to sue because they didn't want to pay the twenty grand for one of the many surgeries. I didn't get a lot, but I bought a fixer up house, and my stepdad and his friend's fixed it up. God bless, and be careful.

They found it easier to put the plugs in a bag, then print a card placing the responsibility on you, rather then set the block up properly, for the application it’s going to be put in.. if there are so many applications that they can’t feasibly put the plugs in, then the included card should list the applications and proper ports to plug based on application, to me that seems like it’s cost quite a few engines, your relying on some freight company to ensure that plastic bag stays with the block…

I have a d466 in the combine and there is no piston oil sprayers on it. I got a kit one time and put it in for a dt466 and burned the pistons out in about fifty hours

Do you measure ring end gap on these rebuild kits? Just curious - it seems performance engine guys worry about it a bunch.

I've heard it only really matters we're stuff goes if it's high performance builds but I know stuff gets certain wear patterns to but I believe as long as oil is making it there shouldn't matter but also heard that why u put everything in same place came out of is if u have any problems from that cylinder u would have all same parts there
