    Good video. I'd also mention when installing your distributor make sure the wires are also installed with the number 1 plug wire installed where the rotor is pointing. Sometimes guys remove that original handy little plastic wire holder ring that latches onto the distributor cap and properly locates cylinder number 1 on the cap.

    In other words with the engine at 0 degrees and #1 cyl on the compression stroke the distributor needs to point at the physical cylinder #1 and the #1 plug on the cap. You can slightly rotate the distributor cap back or forth to get it close.

    • @jrhea5023
      @jrhea5023  Před 4 lety

      Agreed. And the little square part of the cap where the coil gets its power should be pretty much perpendicular to the crankshaft centerline in order to get 32-36° of total timing

  • @davenkaren2572
    @davenkaren2572 Před 2 lety

    I don’t understand why everyone makes a GIANT issue on installing a dizzy! And, why everyone freaks out over “where the #1 points, etc…… basically, install your dizzy until it seats fully down in the intake, properly, then pull it up, move the rotor just a little and re-seat it- basically “walking” it around until you get the rotor pointed where ever you want it- doesn’t matter- only matters on where your plug wires are going to be installed at on the cap. AS LONG AS THE ROTOR POINTS AT THE TOWER WHERE THE NUMBER 1 PLUG WIRE IS INSTALLED, it doesn’t matter. What IS MORE IMPORTANT is to be sure your vac advance is pointed in a direction that gives it ENOUGH ROOM FOR ADJUSTMENT. That’s it- very very simple! I’ve been doing this since I was 15 years old, and I’m in my mid 50’s now, and for some strange reason, this still works on the old dizzy Chevy engines!

    Nice video!! Im about to break in my sbc 400, i have ceramic coated headers, people tell me it might mess them up because they get so hot during brake in.. what do you think?

    • @jrhea5023
      @jrhea5023  Před 3 lety +1

      They are right unfortunately..... Best bet would be to break it in with an old set of headers to save your nice ceramic coating. They do get pretty hot during break in, but if you absolutely can't get another set then make sure your vacuum advance is hooked straight to manifold vacuum so you get the most part throttle timing and do the break in in 5 minute intervals. Unless it's cold outside I usually do them in 2 10 minute sessions anyway. Thanks for the watch and goodluck on your build!

    Once you break in the cam, drain oil, refill with zink, go 500 miles. After that, do you still have to keep zink type oil?

    • @jrhea5023
      @jrhea5023  Před 4 lety

      Yes, if it's a flat tappet camshaft running an oil with added zinc is a good idea. I run Valvoline VR-1 and have had great luck with it at an affordable price.

    Can bad timing make your engine get stuck because my 3 55 small block 350 engine was running and it was way too advanced in ancient got stuck while it was running but then a couple bumps with the starter put on stuck yourself and it was back running again what could be the cause of that

    Hey bud, finally have my 350 in my 6fo and had it now for a couple of days, suddenly I have a little bit of a ticking sound on the driver side in the valve cover. Did you have any ticking noise afterwards? What do you think what it is?

    • @jrhea5023

      No sir, these camshaft break in procedures are for flat tappet cams only. You should however properly break in the engine to seat the rings and wear in all moving parts. Remember to change the oil at 500 and 1000 miles to make sure everything is kosher. After that, regular oil change intervals are just fine. Goodluck and check back in to let me know how everything goes with your project!

    • @jrhea5023

      @@benkalinowski5834 For first start and the initial break in I like to run an oil with a higher ZDDP content than your typical modern oil (ZDDP is an oil additive commonly called simply zinc). ZDDP has great anti wear properties and will help ensure everything breaks in well. My personal go to oil for your typical street SBC is Valvoline VR1 10w30. You may not be able to find VR1 in 10w30 on your local shelves, most places only carry it in 15w50 weight. I order my 10w30 VR1 by the case from Amazon and last I checked it was about $38 for a case of 6 quarts. If you are in a pinch and can't wait the 2 days for Amazon prime most auto parts stores carry bottles of ZDDP additive that can mix with any oil. That's my recommendation on break in. After break in some people switch to synthetic oil, some go to your everyday conventional oil, but my preference is to stay with the VR1 10w30 and change it at 3k mile intervals. That's how I've ran my engine since first start and everything has went great.
