Do NOT Buy a Yamaha Raider! 5 Reasons Why, Dislikes, Complaints, Honest Review 1900cc
Today on Jon's Moto Garage we're going over 5 reasons you do NOT want to buy the Yamaha Raider! That's right, five dislikes. I really had to dig deep to come up with this list, but I pulled it off! For the record, I'm actually a big fan of the Yamaha Raider. This vid, along with most of mine, are primarily for entertainment (90%) and partly for information (10%). As always, thanks for checking the channel and ride safe!

Just picked up my first Raider today. I have to agree with all six of your reasons, minus one. I tend to wear leather half-boots, and since I'm used to the way a Road King hides the kick-stand, I just threw my heel to the same spot. Boom, there it was. First try. "Walk by faith, not by sight" my friends. :-)

After putting 20k miles on my raider, stock seat and exhaust sucks. Kickstand sucks, headlight needs upgrading, and charging system is horrible. No storage, even a small pocket. Chews thru avon tires, fenders look “ok”, but most upgrade. Speaking of upgrading, it costs muuuuuuuch more to mod this motor then say a harley. To put a stage 4 in a raider you will be dumping damn near 10k into it...most older harleys are rebuilt with a stage 4 and will indeed give the raider a run for its money.. in the end, its too expensive to do motor upgrades.

1854cc actually, but still huge. Yes l hear what you are saying, that once you have had a taste of its engine it is hard to appreciate other bikes. I guess it is that it produces its peak torque at 2500 revs and 123 foot pounds of torque is a lot. Even horse power is good for a big vee twin. I have an xv1900. I have a number of gripes. The small amount of travel in the rear shock shits me, it pounds my back. The pissy turning circle is a pain (compapred to my R1150Gs Beemer), the weight of it shits me at 345kg wet, that is a lot given the gas tank is only 17 litres. Where the speedometer is located and not being able to see the indicator lights flashing unless you look down is annoying. In summer the seat gets so effing hot with the oil tank right underneath it and your right thigh gets very hot. It is more an Autumn, winter, spring bike for that reason alone. Oil pressure is too low at idle also and at traffic lights in summer this could be causing engine dammage. Apart from that l like it.

I bought a new Raider S when they first came out and loved it. The seat was so low I sat with my feet flat and my knees bent. Before I drove it off the showroom floor I had cobra pipes installed. I would not have bought that bike without those pipes. They gave it a great sound, not as good as a Harley, but good enough. I have owned 5 Harleys and two other Yamaha motorcycles. Hey Jon, Love this review and I agree 100% except for the kickstand issue. It's only a problem for me if I am not wearing a boot with a heel, which I typically do being vertically challenged. I started out as a new rider on the 2008 Raider, not knowing what I was getting into but not a single regret. I still have her and put over 70k miles on her. 100% true about nothing else compares. I did pick up it's cousin, the Roadliner to use for longer distance rides, but I still prefer my first love. I can think of 5 reasons
    Poor fuel economy
Eats rear tires, which are $350 plus installed
Very poor range, 100 mIles or so
Vertical riding position, very hard on the lower back
Very little cornering clearance, if you are a technical rider, you will scrape metal very frequently "which is very unsafe"
Just my .02, don't get me wrong, I love yamaha, I bought one of these new, sold it pretty quick! This bike is just highly impractical! It's quick for a cruiser, but, if your a sportbike guy, you will not be impressed

Can’t hear them there and the intake where it sucks the air. High pitch noise that annoying me. For the rest, it is the ultimate bike. No other bike but the Rocket 3, Kawasaki VN 2000 has that much torque than our Raider.

Negative, sorry. I got the money to buy a Raider S when a drunk driver plowed thru the back of my squad car at 65 mph while I was at an Auto Crash. As soon as I got my worker's comp check I went to the biggest store in the area for foreign bikes. When I saw the Raider S I knew it was mine. Bought the bike and filled out the paperwork. Got extended warranty on everything from the tires to the bike. I walked up to the service desk and said can I see all your post chrome and electric booklets for aftermarket additions. I looked thru the booklets and I said, "I'll take everything." From the $3000.00 chrome rims to the best new headlamp light, I bought everything they had.
I asked them If I could take it out for a spin for a mile or two and the Yamaha Raider S is a monster! You couldn't find a more kick ass looking, powerful, well put together bike. I had no problems at all, like finding the kick stand.
If I have one complaint that is legit Ament is that the critical components for the bike are hard to get to if you're not a mechanic type of guy. Like me. I don't even want to try to learn. The business I bought it from has a A++ service department.
I've never had one problem with the bike. The one problem I made was right away buying it, I switched pipes on it. I didn't like the curvy pipes, so I bought long slash cut pipes and I needed to have a power commander installed to get the fuel mixture right. So that's my story.
Very good video and thanks for making it.

I took my class with a 250cc and my friend lent me his VTX 1800 after i got my license - big jump from that little scooter I used for the safety class. I was nervous due to the power of the 1800 and knew that if i didn't respect the machine, i was going to hurt myself or worse but once I sat in it, I rode as if I was driving my rig and it went ok. Second thing that you mentioned, I test rode a HD Fatbob .... I was severely disappointed and wanted to more power. First, I fond the way for the kid stand. Don’t try to find the end of the stand but you can see it on half way of the length of it. Between the transmission and the others thing which the driving belt is on. So that is not a problem here. And yes, you track attention. Even Harley riders ask me what Harley is it. They think it’s a Harley. This baby can make Harley eat dusk. Even for the 114ci. It’s true, not for beginner but again, any 1900cc is not for beginners. Me, I bought it two years ago, on my fifth season, first was Shadow Aero 750 for two seasons an a VTX 1300 for two seasons and this baby two years ago. Reason number 4 I don’t agree. I fond that it is easier with this bike than my VTX 1300. The weight is all in the lower part of the bike I can easily U turn in a narrow street. It was much harder with my other one.

My first bike was a 2005 yamaha R1, full yosh, geared, etc. Motor cop training was maybe 2 weeks. And and many of the riders NEVER rode a dirtbike let a lone a motorcycle. However, training was on 1800cc harleys and then you're out on the streets. So if 2 weeks for beginners to be given 800lbs bikes...then a civilian can undergo training and jump on a big bike also. Take a MSF course, utilize good technique, practice more in some parking lots or whatever, ride within your limits, common sense and respect the bike. You can get anything as a first bike as long as you ride like you got some sense. I know a few guys who have died with 20+ years experience because they were doing stupid things on bikes vs beginners who ride safe. Even if someone started on say a 600cc bike, they will still have to LEARN THAT PARTICULAR BIKE they wish to upgrade to. And the fundamentals needed can be learned in a basic MSF rider course.
