  • the teen movie has fallen quite far since its glory days in the 80s and 90s and with films like he's all that, the craft legacy, and the kissing booth, i'd almost given up hope on the genre entirely. so imagine my surprise when i sat down to watch netflix's do revenge and found myself actively enjoying it. starring camila mendes from riverdale and maya hawke from stranger things, the dark comedy is a love letter to the teen films that came before it. what did you think of do revenge?

I REALLY liked that Drea knew immediately that Max leaked the video and there was no ambiguity introduced by her losing her phone or something. To me, that felt much much more true to life-you know what happened, there’s really only one possibility, and no one believes you anyway.

I actually sort of agree. In my life, I've seen people believe men's completely unbelievable stories, or indeed lack of stories, justifying their actions, over women's accusations. It's more comfortable for them to believe the higher status person, usually the man, rather than analyzing the facts and determining who and what to believe.

yes! in my interpretation, drea not thinking of the other girls (the ones she's been in a dispute with ) as the culprits makes sense to me because they're also women - the conflict between the girls is still there but it will never get to the point of doing that kind of thing with each other, bc drea clings on to this hope that no girl would stoop this low.

I actually *really* liked that the hetero and gay leads were portrayed as so platonically intimate without ending up together. I personally think it’s one of those things we maybe don’t see enough of? Especially in how wlw are written, Eleanor is smitten with Drea without actually falling for her, and so often these relationships are portrayed unfavorably where the wlw ends up rejected/cast out/ridiculed for flying too close to the sun (or whateva). Or the opposite happens where the straight girl realizes she’s been gay all along, which is fine as a trope but I think it’s a bit played out by now. So their friendship was really refreshing to me.

One thing I noticed and really liked about the movie were the colors. Drea most often wore pinkish/warm colors while Eleanor wore blueish/cold ones. However, when doing each others revenge they would often flip their colors. When Drea was still "famous" she wore the purple version of the school uniform but later switched to the mint one, while Eleanor gets dressed up into the purple one. At the turning point, when Eleanor lies and reveals her "true colors" she does it literally by wearing the blue jacket (that Drea comments on). It goes for their surroundings as well. For example Dreas bedroom was mostly pink, however, in the scene where she was confiding in Eleanor and getting emotionally supported by her, she was covered by a blue blanket. The bathroom they first met in was a combination of blue and pink as well.

    *SPOILERS*
I've found online that a lot of people were surprised that this movie was actually able to trick them by delivering on the plot twist. That marks a good movie and good acting! I recently saw a TikTok of Maya Hawke saying she studied male roles because women often aren't casted as likable villains / these roles don't exist for women. Because her character was likeable and relatable and was then revealed to be coming, the plot twist was shocking!
I did find that the ending (being tied up in a perfect bow) undermined the movie. I would've they rather didn't end up with their romantic interests. They did bad things, and although they regretted them, were seemingly rewarded.
I overall did love how campy this movie was compared to modern teen movies and the references to cult classics!

There wasn't really an easy way for Drea to NOT believe that Max was behind it. His friends went along with his innocence either really not believing him or accepting it and just thinking 'glad it wasn't me'.
But for Drea it was clear from the start because it wasn't photos, it was a Sex Tape Max shot, very likely on his phone. So even though he very flimsily claimed 'It wasn't me. I got hacked', it was pretty obvious that it was him.

I absolutely LOVED this commentary. Admittedly I was one of those people who had wished Drea and Eleanor would've ended up together in the end. I'm a sucker for sexual tension between female rivals (my favorite recent iteration of this being Dare Me). But I also understand the point of not having them end up together. Because the movie is less about their obsession with each other and rather their pathological need to manipulate and control their relationships. That being said, seeing as they really hadn't learned their lesson by the end, I would've preferred they ended up with no one. They already skipped graduation (which left me a little salty, since Drea's initial point about having to work hard to get to Yale was undermined by her throwing the opportunity away) they might as well have skipped out on all the other "happy ending" tropes as well. That would further highlight how especially unhinged they both are.
    Also agree for more Tara.

the movie was so good and fun, but once that party started in the final act everything kinda felt rushed. like the writers suddenly realised that they only had ten pages left to wrap things up. i get that eleanor had already been conflicted when the reveal happened because she had created an actual bond with drea, but drea definitely should have been more angry. i mean, she literally hit her with her car and was blackmailing her.
that reconnection probably would have felt a lot better if eleanor had been the one to smash the camera and make the speech

That plot twist was so good! I ultimately felt more immediate solidarity to Drea’s character because she’s genuinely lower class and has already lost so much due her other awful relationships to her rich classmates. It was terrifying with her car getting messed with and then the threats to her mother and actually getting hit by Eleanor’s car. Drea had more to lose and lost the most throughout the film. I think in hindsight Eleanor’s character still scares me and I hope they don’t try and tack on any sequels because those girls should never be within the same 10-feet of one another.

I think its kind of unfair that you are judging the fact that Drea's old friend group sided with Max after Drea's photos got leaked as one of the movie's negatives based on your assumption that they already knew it was him. They may have been familiar with marketing Max as a progressive good guy when he gets into trouble but that doesn't mean he doesn't keep secrets from them, especially when if it involves him actively harming one of the group. Plus, Drea mentioned that they are Max's friends more than her and it is likely that it is because they grew up together and/or their families know each other (like with Tara and her relationship with Max).
