She wasn't even a mean girl... By that I mean throughout the entire movie, she's never done anything intentionally malicious to anyone... She just... Happened to meet Regina and ended up hanging with her cuz "why not"
I love how it pointed out that unlike Cady, Regina and Gretchen, Karen never changes the entire movie. She doesn't change for the sake of others... She just stays her genuine self with or without regina... With or without Cady... Ect.

Mean Girls is the most accurate high school movie in terms of how high school bullying actually works, probably because it was based off a non-fiction book written by a psychologist who studied how young girls actually talk to each other. There are so many painfully inaccurate films and TV shows where the girls say insults straight to each other’s faces. That almost never happens, in high school or beyond. All this drama is sneaky and under the table. Passive aggressiveness. Anonymous cyber bullying. Saying, “come to the mall with me. But don’t tell Gretchen. I don’t want her to come.” “Forgetting” to invite Karen to that party.

But here, you know that the girl who uses jumbo sized tampons also got punched in the face by Regina. Something interesting about the “On Wednesdays we wear pink” scene: later on when the girls are at her house, we see Regina take off her cardigan (the only pink component of her outfit), showing both her lack of reverence for the pink rule and her taking off a costume of sorts at home. Meanwhile the pink clothing the other three have chosen can not be so easily shed-they’re still on the clock, so to speak, until they get to their homes and out of Regina’s space.

  • @jamiesays1

I always saw Regina's Wednesday outfit as another representation of her seeing herself as above the rules and the other Plastics. Her only pink item is the cardigan, which can be and is later taken off. The only effort she has to put into the Wednesday rule is throwing a cardigan on over a more distinctive outfit, whereas the others commit more through blouses.

Something I liked is at the end of the film when Cady sits down with her friend group and Karen is there. Karen is braiding another girl’s hair, showing she still has a love for beauty and femininity, going back to what you said about her never really pretending to be someone she wasn’t. Karen was never vicious in the same way that Regina and Gretchen were (not that she’s perfect) and when she was down on herself after Regina called her stupid, Cady was comforting and kind. It feels right that those two managed to stay friends in the end while the other plastics grew apart.

In the film, Regina herself references how Karen is perceived as the most attractive girl in school, so a potential threat to Regina's role as queen bee. Regina has the likes of Karen and Gretchen (a gossip/information broker) in her ranks to keep them under her control and remove them from the table as potential threats to her power. She quickly befriends Cady for the same reason due to Cady's good looks and interesting background.

As if Regina accepted that Cady was the only one on her “level” and didn’t want to fight her about it, out of some form of respect. maybe this can play into the Regina being possibly queer with lots of internalized homophobia theory, a reason why she had that respect could be because a possible liking to Cady. There are clues in the film that despite still being mean to Cady she liked her the most/viewed her as a little more than a minion in comparison to the other plastics, for example replacing her photo of her and Aaron in her room with one of her and Cady as seen when she rages in the burn book. I remember being in high school and appreciating that they had the “Asian nerds” and the “cool Asians” because that’s exactly how it was. I liked that, even if it was still stereotypical (the girls cat fight in Cantonese), they showed Asians as much more than the nerdy straight A students. I think guys also like this movie because it helps them understand girl world a lot better. When guys fight, they throw fists and forget about it. It wasn’t until they saw this movie that my guy friends realized how vicious and sneaky fights were amongst women.

The shot of Cady's Louis Vuitton white purse with multi-colored lettering perfectly describes her after Christmas break: a counterfeit Regina.
Since that LV piece was extremely popular in 2003, it was also highly counterfeited as well during that time. Therefore, the shot of Cady starting to wear the handbag later in the school year in 04 when she turned plastic, symbolizes what she became: a knock off of Regina George!

My favorite outfits in the whole movie are Regina's. You can tell Regina is the powerhouse in the plastics just by the details of his under-shirt on the power suit. Everything is very sharp and prominent, almost telling you that Regina is not easy to play around with, and it's very much used like a non-verbal introduction to Cady about the power-dynamics of the group. Regina's outfits in general feel like a power play to outshine the other plastics. The way that she barely even fit the dress code on wednesday, showing how much she can stray far away from the rules without consequences, the way she doesn't even wear a revealing shirt on PE, showing how she doesn't even try to even get the attention from the whole school. She can get away with doing anything and she will still be above the plastics. And she loves knowing that, and savours it for every single day until Cady throws the whole dynamics into an 180 just by her intelligence

I like how the Halloween costumes show the wealth differences between the plastics. Karen is likely middle/upper middle class. Her costume is a lingerie teddy any teen could get from VS. Regina is wealthy. Her costume is somewhat attainable, maybe at Fredrick’s of HW, but still not commonly accessible for a teen girl. Gretchen has a full patent catsuit that fits like a glove. Idk where you could get that back then as a teen. Now you could find things online, but it was much harder then and probably quite expensive.

I got influenced heavily, chopped my hair by myself (i regret that so much 😭), and refused to wear dresses and skirts and jewelry. Its not only until my teenage years I’ve been beginning to embrace my feminity again. Wearing pink and skirts and jewelry. Thats kind of what draws me to Janis’s character. Heather D is like Gretchen, a follower who wants to please the dictator. and Heather M is like Karen, not actually a bad person, just someone who acts mean because thats what their friends are teaching them to do. in both movies, as the dictator starts to get weak and go away, the followers get nicer and start to act normal. this whole dynamic displays how people like Regina and Heather C can easily control people and change them in a bad way.

Candy really keeps her style for the first quarter of the movie- just wearing things like tops in her style, but pink. I think another comment has already said this but Regina is also just wearing a pink jumper, you can easily take that off and she would be wearing no pink. Except for the writing on her iconic white shirt. She always had more power over the other plastics and considered herself as the queen bee. The others (Gretchen and Karen) were like minions. With out them she would still have power. Cady also, she seemed to have more power than Gretchen or Karen. You can really see this in the scene where Gretchen is told to move to Reginas left, Karen on Cady’s right and Gretchen on Reginas left. It has the same elements as Cady’s at the beginning of the movie (jeans and a comfortable T-shirt with hair in a ponytail) yet definitely incorporated her own style. Since this is the scene where she regains control you would expect her to wear a more elevated version of what she wore in the shopping scene- where she was most powerful, but that would not separate her from the others enough to make her bullying claim valid. So they went in the opposite direction to create a sense of otherness and make her look like more of an outsider/ victim which was how cady was initially portrayed.

Sabrina C, the key to dressing good is great fit. Get your clothes tailored. Speak to a seamstress before buying clothes to know what size to buy so that your problem areas can be tailored, as you can always remove excess fabric but you can’t do anything about having not enough fabric. For a quick reference, don’t buy clothes where the waist is too short for your natural waist (unless you’re wearing empire waist style), and buy the size to fit your largest circumference. For example, if you have a large bust, get the baggy shirt to fit your bust. The shoulders and waist can be taken in and the shirt will fit nicely. Or if you have large thighs and hips, get the pants that fit very comfortably in that area and give you comfortable ease of movement, as the waist can always be tailored smaller.
I know this is expensive, but it forces you to really consider what style you’re going for and organizing a colour palette that matches everything so that you can make the most outfit combos out of the least amount of clothes. You might not have a lot of clothes but you’ll look amazing in the ones you do.
Also, if you choose to learn to tailor your own clothes as a way to save money, keep in mind that it’s still an expensive hobby. There’s a learning curve, and all the hours you put in for learning from your mistakes are the same hours you could have worked at a regular job and paid a trained seamstress to do it for you. That’s not even accounting the cost of materials (clothes you’ll ruin in the learning process), maintaining a working sewing machine, and buying new machine needles for every project. Furthermore, without a mentor, expect it to take a much longer time to learn going down the self-taught route. Only go down this path if sewing is a hobby you’re actually interested in.
Good luck in defining your style!
