  • I purchased a Betstco 48" heavy duty flail mower for my Kubota B2601 and get it setup and try it out! Please let me know if there is anything I'm doing wrong or could improve, as this is my first time setting up and using this implement. Thanks!

    Hey good evening Joe! So wonderful to see your beautiful young lady is smiling and very happy. And mom has a grin from ear to ear. The flail mower. A few points, for you to consider. I have several flail mower videos last summer but I would offer the following: the mower is meant to sit "back" on the roller. So you should extend your upper control link out to ensure it tends to sit higher in the front (closest to your 3 point hitch). You should have a couple of bolted height adjustments on the roller. Set it on the highest setting to start out and then adjust it down, if needed, after you have used it a few times until you get the right setting for the B2601. It is not meant to mow backwards so just an FYI. Also, I see you had it running with the mower lifted high up - remember the PTO booklet you should have received with it (I did a video on how to cut your PTO shaft), I believe you should not be running the PTO if the shaft is tilted more than a 25 degree angle, so just something to keep in mind. Otherwise I think you will love that flail mower. it is pretty awesome. Great to see baby Soslick - you must be so proud. And momma of course too. Nice to see an update on the Soslick family. Be well my friend and all the best to you and your wonderful family. Cheers!

      Thanks GP, always good to hear from you! I will certainly rewatch (probably for a third time now, haha) your videos on the flail to ensure I've got the basics down. Good point on the angle of the PTO shaft-- I think that may have slightly contributed to stalling when I first engaged it. I'm going to recheck everything tonight before I go out to use it, and ensure everything is adjusted and greased well. I'll look forward to more pointers from you after my next video with it, LOL.
      Life, wife, and baby are all doing great too! Watching this little girl grow day by day is the most incredible thing I've ever experienced, as cliche as that may sound--but it's true! Be well sir, see you around!

    One of the most realistic videos on how 😢 much of a pain this mower is to set up and lack direction in the manual. I just got one and a major pain and not quick hitch compatible still.

    💥 Hi Joe!!!
    That little girl of yours is too cute!!
    I really enjoyed watching this video. Yes the black plastic cover is a pain in the butt, good call to take it off. Cutting a PTO shaft is one of those things that you measure many times before cutting. Nice job 👍 the clutch part of it you refer to would really only be effective if you had a gear driven implement. Because the flail is belt driven the belt will slip before the sheer pin breaks.
    I start my flail PTO at about 2200 rpm’s and increase the the 540 mark on the gauge. If you engage it too low you’ll stall out as you’ve discovered. You are going to have a lot of fun with that. It’ll surprise you what it’s able to chew up.
    Staying out past your allotted time I can completely relate to. They grow up fast!
    Keep on tractoring Joe!

      Hey Jon, thanks for the tips. I sort of felt the same way regarding the belts, I would expect them to give out or slip/burn before anything of consequence breaks. But yeah, positioning the driveshaft and tinkering with that black cover had me going in circles (and covered in grease) for a bit! Haha.
      I for sure have a learning curve, but I'm excited to see what this thing can do. I'm hoping to get out there tonight after work and let 'er rip along the pond :)
      Thanks again, see ya around!

    Joe that’s a great mower, I have that model too. You need to run your pro at 540 rpm, don’t be trying to guess by what you think you hear. I mow 4 foot tall grass all the time with no issues. Grease and oil it before each big mowing and it will out last you.

    • @JoeSoslick
      @JoeSoslick  Před 4 lety

      Thanks for the tip. Unfortunately my model of tractor doesn't have a PTO rpm display, just an engine RPM gauge... so I sort of have to go by feel and sound. But it seems to work itself out, haha. I've got some really tall stuff I'm waiting on to die off that I'll be mowing this fall, and I'm pretty excited to see what this flail can do to it... and I'll be sure to grease 'er up good before I do that! Thanks for watching.

  • @Jamieaus
    @Jamieaus Před 4 lety +1

    @Joe Soslick I'd recommend engaging the pto at a higher throttle setting. Kubota recommends 70% power I believe. Significantly less shock on the power train that way

    • @JoeSoslick
      @JoeSoslick  Před 4 lety

      Thanks, I've upped the RPMs when engaging the flail, usually around 20-30%. The mid mount mower takes about 10-20% to engage.

    Now you gone and done it. You made me learn something. I didn't even know what a flail mower was! Very interesting to watch. So I'm assuming the taller growth would be too much for the normal mower deck to handle? And/or they don't make a mulch plug to convert the normal mower deck from side discharge to mulching?

    • @JoeSoslick
      @JoeSoslick  Před 4 lety

      Haha, to be honest I didn't know what one was either until I spent too much time on CZcams watching other people with tractors! But yes, it has a similar effect as a "brush hog" in that you can mow just about anything (within reason for the size of the machine) down, but a little differently than a standard rotary mower. It does more mulching by recycling the debris over and over versus launching it out of the sides like a standard horizontal mower. And you have multiple "flails" versus just two big spinning blades. There are for sure pluses and minuses to each. More or less, if the tractor can run over it, the flail can mow it-- and yes, you wouldn't want to mow this tall nasty stuff with the main mower deck, as it would likely ruin the blades and burn out the belts pretty quick.
      I haven't seen anyone with a mulch plug on a deck like mine (though I also haven't looked around too much), but I do think they make mulching blades. However I think the finish mower decks are designed to produce the highest blade tip speed possible and to discharge as much material as possible out of the side. I want to say the blade tip speed on the finish mower can reach 18,000 RPM... it produces quite a bit of lift, for sure. Trying to mulch with a finish mower would probably lead to a poor cut... I really have no idea though! Hah.

      Thanks for the tip! After a few more hours using the PTO I did get the hang of it and found 1100rpms with easing onto the engagement lever to work well. Love the tractor, you don't see too many of them go up for sale used, probably because it's such a good all around medium duty beast. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    I was about to buy the medium duty version of this flail mower for the soon-to-be-mine B2650 because the HP rating on the heavy duty one is reported as 22 HP at the PTO. Curious how this flail has been doing for you over the last year. Have you taken it into any thick brush or any woody material near its diameter limit? Any problems with stalling or feeling like your 2601 was challenged or straining?
    Thanks!

    • @JoeSoslick
      @JoeSoslick  Před 3 lety

      Hi Joshua,
      I just typed a really long response to you with a lot of good points, but then the page randomly reloaded and I lost it all :( So cliff notes are that I love the flail, it only really bogs down in thick muck and grass, but you just have to go slow. I keep the bucket and mower deck on when I use it, and that seems to help flatten out stuff before the flail gets to it. I wouldn't go much larger than 2". Anything bigger than that I cut down by hand or rip out with the ratchet rake first, then run over it. I also usually keep it in Low gear when in use, to help with not straining the machine too much. The machine does need some more RPMs to get the flail spinning when you first start, but once it gets going it seems to work just fine. Let me know if you have any other questions, happy to answer what I can, thanks!

      So far, so good! I probably have around 10 or so hours on it, and no complaints. Assembly takes a little while, so don't be in a rush to use it once you get it, but overall I love the cut it provides. Check out my latest video, I did some more flail mowing in that one as well. Hope it works out for you, thanks for watching!

    You need a short PTO Extender on the tractor to make it set out from the oil dipper.

    • @JoeSoslick
      @JoeSoslick  Před 4 lety

      I guess I could do that... but would it really change anything?

    • @rickvb2709
      @rickvb2709 Před 4 lety +1

      You could turn it around the way they suggest and put the slip joint on the tractor side. It would give you more room and set away from the oil dip stick and not hit it if the shear bolt breaks and put the safety cover back on the mower.

    • @JoeSoslick
      @JoeSoslick  Před 3 lety +1

      you won't want anything larger than 4' wide for that tractor. Your tractor has around 17hp at the PTO, mine has 19... both are below the recommended hp for a 4' flail, so if you do go with a 4' model you'll want to go slow.

      @@alisaid3182 I appreciate that you’d ask, but I’m not sure I’m the best person to go to for a recommendation. I have had good luck with my flail mower which is a Betstco brand, but have never used any other brands or any other machines. I would recommend asking on some other tractor forums or groups. Ive only put about 5 to 10hrs on my flail, so I can’t even really comment on how long it will last or if it’s “the best”. Good luck!

    That weight is nothing for that tractor and should be able to lift over 1000lbs no biggy. Your clamp on pallet forks are a bit short. They look like 36 inch ones and needs at least 43 inches off front of bucket so 60 inch ones. Then you need REAR BALLAST! Lol. Then you could have unloaded it the right way with the forks in the pallet like you first tried.
    Good times! Not a bad mower for Chinese made oregon based company.
