Pond work, grass seeding, and smoothing out a hillside - Ep. 119
I continue to work on the pond, pulling weeds and applying herbicide and dye. I begin to fix an erosion problem on another part of my property, which will involve using the Kubota B2601 to dig and move the dirt. The grass seeding went OK, a lot of it was lost due to extreme weather shortly after I planted it... but as of now I am seeing new shoots sprout up, so I guess we'll see what happens. Stay tuned!

Rakes on rakes, and breathing life into my pond! - Ep. 118

I finish up grading around the pond with the drag harrow and landscape rake attached to the Kubota B2601. Then I install a two bladder pond aerator to get the water moving and get the oxygen flowing. Super exciting! Shot with a Flip UltraHD video camera.

The bulldozer came out and cut the final grade on the pond berm, and was also able to get down into the pond and really clean things up. I use the drag harrow on my Kubota B2601 to clean up after the dozer, but find that I'm in need of a landscape rake... Things are shaping up! Shot with a Flip UltraHD video camera.

    Just like my birds, LOL. Herding tip: Get a light colored, lightweight stick, 5 to 7 feet long. 8 feet seems just a bit unweildy to me, and I stand 6 ft tall. Bamboo works, or a piece of PVC pipe. It's gotta be light, so you can switch hands, and extend it to one side or the other as needed, quickly, without effort. Mostly, just hold the stick parallel to the ground, and walk toward the birds, and they will stay ahead of you, out of reach of the stick. You can steer them anywhere you want. Works for guineas, all my chickens, the ducks, pot bellied pig, sheep, and to a lesser extent, works for goats. When I discovered this, I finally understood why shepard's crooks work! It might work for horses and cattle, but I've had no occasion to test it on them.

    I love your raucous flock of guinea hens. Sweet birds! I'm concerned about that one hen at 8:30. What is wrong with her foot? She is limping. Be careful of bumblefoot - a serious staph infection. She could lose her leg. Please see a vet and get some help for her. It must be painful. Its interesting that Hosta plant leaves are toxic for dogs, cats, cattle, but great source of minerals for chickens. Thanks for sharing, this is great footage of guinea fowl. You have both done a great job of training these wild birds to come back to the coop at night, safe from predators. One trick used by owls - the guinea likes to sit on a tree high up. The owl perches next to them, then bumps into them and pushes them off the branch. Once this heavy guinea bird is falling through the air, the owl swoops down and sinks its talons on its body then flies off with one. Coop is best!

    That weight is nothing for that tractor and should be able to lift over 1000lbs no biggy. Your clamp on pallet forks are a bit short. They look like 36 inch ones and needs at least 43 inches off front of bucket so 60 inch ones. Then you need REAR BALLAST! Lol. Then you could have unloaded it the right way with the forks in the pallet like you first tried. Good times! Not a bad mower for Chinese made oregon based company.

    Penetrant. That WAS the key. At least for me. I worried about getting that cutting edge off all summer! So first I hit the bolts with paint remover. I don't think mine were as painted as yours. But it did seem to thin the paint in the threads, which may help most, at least after the bolt breaks free. Then I sprayed some Fluid Film on the bolts. And lots of Gibbs Mega Penetrant, including on the bolt heads on the opposite side, and it leaked through. I did this again the next day. When I finally put my new breakover bar on, the bolts popped free.

      @@JoeSoslick I have a question about how high to run the rubber strip in relation to the skid shoes. Now, I sprang for Kubota's edge kit, a massive rubber strip fully 1" thick and about 6" wide that can be flipped when one edge wears out. Plus a steel bar with holes to clamp it to the blade. Anyway, I have the shoes set so that you can slide a finger under the rubber on each end but not through the middle. Should I raise it a tad more? On the one hand, I want a clean scrape off asphalt. On the other, no sense in wearing out the rubber fast. And 1/2-3/4" of snow is going to melt fast. Also the skid shoes themselves seem simple till you get looking at how the little spacers can cup down or up in all kinds of combinations.

    • @JoeSoslick
      @JoeSoslick Před 2 lety

      @@RichardGilbert2727 I ended up putting my shoes all the way up, so that they won’t contact the asphalt at all. I used to run them a few spacers lower, but they end up dragging on the ground and marking up the asphalt. I believe they are really only intended for gravel and other soft surfaces. One guy told me he takes them off completely to do his asphalt drive. I probably have around 2” of baler belt showing, and it hasn’t shown really any wear for the past two or three years I’ve used it. Since I’m using three baler belts stacked together, it might function differently than your solid piece of rubber… the belts bend backwards as I’m plowing, so it sort of works as a squeegee. Your thicker rubber may do the same, or it might not, haha. Of course I only figured these things out after doing it the wrong way the first few times, so the good news is that you’ll figure it out quick if you don’t like the way it works out the first go-round! :)

      @@JoeSoslick Makes sense! Thanks, Joe. I'll probably try the shoes first, giving about an inch of clearance to the rubber. My fear with this heavy thick rubber is that it's going to resist the ground more and get chewed up. But I'm not sure! I have an asphalt drive but my daughter has a long gravel drive. So lots of variables here.

      I actually thought about getting a 60" lawn roller, but I'm not trying to accumulate a ton of equipment that only gets used infrequently or only for one job (I sort of feel like I already did that with the subsoiler and landscape rake, but time will tell). It seems like just driving over it multiple times with the tractor and back-dragging with the bucket does a decent enough job. For the amount of effort (and $$$) it would take to make it "perfect", I'd rather just buy new mower blades and hand pick the offending rocks each year, haha.

    About 10 years ago we had French drains installed around our house foundation. Your dirt/rock situation is very similar to what I had to deal with. I didn't have drags or rakes back then - just my old B7500 and loader. I back-dragged the whole mess, alternating between "gather mode" and "compression mode" - the former to collect rocks that were more than 50% above the surface, and the latter to (try to) squish down the rest. Grass seed, about a month's wait, then picking the occasional rock during routine mowing. Don't sweat it. scratchypants.com/pics/frdain.jpg
