  • This is based on my personal situation, i took car for an MOT and they couldn't open the bonnet. So this was the only way i could think of to get the bonnet open without damage.
    Tools needed
    10mm spanner
    Large screwdriver
Piece of skirting board or similar
The lever in the footwell was loose
I removed the handle and cover by gently prising handle with a screwdriver
The cable end was intact and cable didn't pull out of outer cable but still wouldn't open when pulling with no resistance felt when doing so
So I removed the Inner wheel arch and bottom engine plastic guard but still unable to see where I could pull or prise anything to open my bonnet
So I then tried to remove the front VW badge but it felt like it would break if forced and still unsure if this would gain me access.
So I found 2 pieces of skirting board and gently eased up the bonnet pressing in bevel edge first on each side as seen in the picture
This gave me access to see the bolts for the bonnet catch bracket on the bonnet.
I then tried to reach with a 10mm spanner but they were out of reach so I extended a spanner using another spanner and screwdriver as seen in the picture.
Once I had cracked them loose (anti-clockwise) I had enough room to get a ratchet spanner in and undo until the bonnet opened. the hardest bit is keeping the spanner from dropping down from the bolt (I didn't know if there was a thread in the bonnet or a nut the other side as can be seen in the pictures luckily the bonnet has threads) - thinner and longer the spanner the better.
It turned out to be where the wire to the bonnet joins just above the Headlamp on the driver’s side (UK) the cable had pulled though so I reseated as it appeared to be undamaged tested with the catch before bolting it back to the bonnet and testing again. when doing this take care not to scratch paintwork as the bonnet catch will bounce up when opening the release and could slide down the front of the car.
Hope this helps someone as I couldn't see anything for my particular model. Take care not to force anything and be patient when undoing the bolts.
VW has a strange way of changing design between models so this may vary to yours.
