Hi Fextralife, who has better spells/items from a pure acquisition standpoint: Confessor or Prophet?
I've always played a strength/faith paladin in the Souls series and on confessor or prophet I can just level the attributes I need so stats aren't very important to me. I just don't want to lose out on a very expensive prayer or mid-game shield, ect.

That’s been my Demon Souks build and DS3. But the Confessor seems just that, but at the start with less grinding. I think I’m going with that for a new experience. a couple points of missed info:
the bandits starting dagger also inflicts bleed. (I think the bleed value is 31) and the reduvia can be acquired immediately after creation, which also inflicts 59 bleed or something and can be power stanced. its not actually a backstab pigeonhole.
definitely do not remove an armor piece from the vagabond if youre new, remove one of your weapons instead. his broadsword swings faster and actually does really good poise damage so I removed his polearm thing.
the samurai class is by far the most beginner friendly class in the game, regardless of being melee. it encourages the use of ashes of war, does insane damage, bleeds, and attacks fast. its not a coincidence that it was everyones starting class.
the astrologer is really not that good and not that fun to play early. you get 2 sorceries; glintstone arc eats your fp bar and doesn't deal much damage, and glintstone pebble gets input-dodged everytime you cast it. (which means you have to bait enemy attacks, completely removing your range advantage. additionally, this class has like 4 less life flasks because theyre allocated to your fp flasks, making you that much more vulnerable.) astrologer doesn't pop off until after Liurnia, where you can find a lot of sorceries and other mage-related items. its also the only real ranged play style which means the things you learn on astrologer won't translate very well to other characters.
blocking in this game isn't as good as any other souls-like. not recommending a certain class because the shield "doesn't mitigate 100% physical damage" is a weird excuse I've heard so many times. everyone will tell you to two-hand a weapon anyway. just learn to dodge-roll, blocking 2 attacks will usually stance break you anyway. point being: a class isn't harder or easier because of their shield. if you ARE determined to use a shield, you need to get the "barricade shield" ash of war.
there are more golden seeds than you can use in the game, so if youre comfortable without an extra starting flask you could consider an alternative. something that people don't talk about is the cracked pot starting gift, there are only so many in the game and if you like consumables like I do, its really nice to have an extra.

The Wretch doesn't seem to have an advantage in stats. It seems like either the "go-to" build if you don't know what you want or want more difficulty. If you DO know what you want then any of the other classes are better from a min-max perspective. Confessor's don't want Int, so they drop a point there, ect.

Yes, But Wretch is great for flexibility if you want to try out many diffrent builds. And use the respec feature. Sure the builds will never be optimal but it might be more optimal than if you use a starting class that start with very low stats for the build you want to respec into.

Ehh mage is really cheesy until it’s not, and then it’s really not. If something manages to close the distance to you I one way or another, you’re suddenly in for a world of hurt. Especially if you’re a new player and haven’t learned the combat system because you’ve been keeping everything at bay. Spells are a real crutch, which is the main reason I don’t recommend them for new players- they don’t encourage you to learn combat mechanics.

@@MaximusProxi Oh, yeah, I was just saying, if it’s something you’re interested in trying out, don’t be discouraged just because it seems like easy mode. Most boss fights will still be pretty hard, since you can’t maintain distance from them, or guarantee that they’ll stay aggroed onto other players/spirits, and a lot of regular enemies close distance really quickly, or dodge spells. You’ll have some difficult encounters either way.

You need two keys. If you look closely at it, there are two imps on top of each other, signifying that you need two keys, and if you try to open it with one, it tells you “not enough”.

Just because you want your character to play that way doesn't mean you can't by starting off with a different starting class. In souls games, 99% of the time you can essentially take any starting character and turn it into any build. If this is truly your first souls game, then don't worry about what sounds cool. After the first 10 hours or so your starting character really won't matter as you can turn any starting class into just about anything you want. No need to make it harder on yourself, especially if this is your first time around. Souls games can be spirit crushingly difficult for a lot.

Think of Prisoner class as an Assassin. Its starting stats are reflecting that sort of play style. However, like others have stated, you don’t have to go that route if it doesn’t appeal to you and you can turn it into whatever build you desire.
My best advise: choose a weapon or two you REALLY mesh with and build your stats to augment that weapon(s) scaling. This includes the magic catalysts as well if you decide to go magic.

The only difference if you start with the 'wrong' class for your build, is that it will take a few extra levels to reach a certain power level or be able to equip a certain item. Basically it's the same as if you allocated stats in the wrong attribute in any other rpg.

Do you prefer to use nearly any weapon you like while healing yourself and dealibg devastating blows with huge AoE miracles? Then you go with Confessor.
Wanna start right out the gate with a consistent rapier, get the hang of dodging and stealthing, use nimble and agile weapons while throwing precise and deadly soul spells? Go Prisoner.
There isn't a wrong way to go on these games, i'm just here to help with you decision.

Assuming you mean to play them through without changing playstyles, then it's really a question of do you prefer the miracles or sorceries in the game?
Astrologer & Prophet are the pure casters, Prisoner & Confessor are the spell-sword hybrids of the former two.

I kind of wanted to be able to do both Melee and Cast dmg spells, but I still am not sure what would be best for that. Never played a Souls game before, but played alot of DnD so class making is always fun. Planning on starting vagabound and building into faith/strength as I progress for a Paladin typa build... Confessor looks sick, but I wanna start tanky and slowly build in the faith

the difference is the classes in Elden Ring are fluid. they don't define you. you can change everything about them when you level up

    • @heyfell4301
      @heyfell4301 Před 2 lety

Edit: i misinterpreted the "slowly" and thought you were talking about a slower character. Still, my advice can help you nonetheless.
I don't recommend you get the "slow" part very serious. Speed is in the core of the game's combat, you'll wanna have at least enought agility to dodge the attacks.
If you want a tip, unequip the weapon you like the least, be it the sword or the halberd (unequip your helmet too in case it's the halberd), then you'll be able to avoid nicely any attack you can't dodge. Don't forget to level your endurance so you can get better armor.
Think it as a: "if your equip load is above 70.0, you'll get -3 to AC"
